तस्मादस्मान्महाभाग परित्रातुं त्वमर्हसि
Therefore, O illustrious one, you ought to rescue us.
शनैर्विलोकयामास शरणं समुपागतान्
He slowly looked upon those who had come seeking refuge.
दृष्ट्वा त्वतप्यद्भगवान्सर्वभूतानुकंपकः
Seeing them, the blessed one, compassionate toward all beings, was moved.
उज्जीवयञ्छनैर्वाचा मा भैष्टेति महामतिः
With gentle words, the wise one revived them, saying, 'Do not fear.'
समये स्थापयामास राज्ञस्ताञ्जीवितार्थिनः
He established those seekers of life under the king's protection.
गत्वा तं राजवर्यं स्वयमथ शनकैः सांत्वयित्वा यथावत्सप्राणानामरीणामपगमनविधावभ्यनुज्ञां ययाचे
Then, going to that distinguished king himself, he gently comforted him as appropriate, and requested permission for the departure of the living and the dead.
श्रौतस्मार्त्तविभिन्नकर्मनिरतान्विप्रैश्च दूरोञ्झितान्सासून्केवलमत्यजन्मृतसमानेकैकशः पार्थिवान्
He did not abandon the kings, one by one, who were engaged in diverse Vedic and Smriti rites, who had been driven far away by Brahmins along with their sons, and who were equal in birth and death.
यवनान्विगतश्मश्रून्कांबोजांश्चबुकान्वितान्
He did not abandon the Yavanas, who had lost their beards, nor the Kambojas, nor those accompanied by the Shakas.
वेदोक्तकर्मनिर्मुक्तान्विप्रैश्च परिवर्जितान्
He did not abandon those freed from Vedic rites, nor those forsaken by Brahmins.
ततस्ते रिपवस्तस्य त्यक्तस्वाचारलक्षणाः
Then those enemies of his, having abandoned the marks of proper conduct—
धिक्कृता सततं सर्वेनृशंसा निरपत्रपाः
Were constantly reviled by all, merciless and shameless.
क्रूराश्च संघशो लोके बभूवुर्म्लेछजातयः
Cruel, in groups, the mleccha races arose in the world.
एता अद्यापि सद्भिः सततमवमता जातयो ऽसत्प्रवृत्त्या वर्त्तन्ते दुष्टचेष्टा जगति नरपतेः पालयन्तः प्रतिज्ञाम्
Even today, these lineages are continually despised by the virtuous; acting with wicked conduct, they uphold their vow in the world, O king.
इति श्रीब्रह्माण्डे महापुराणे वायुप्रोक्ते मध्यमभागे तृतीय उपोद्धातपादे सगरोपाख्याने सगरप्रतिज्ञापालनं नामाष्टाचत्वारिंशत्तमो ऽध्यायः
Thus ends the forty-eighth chapter, named 'The Keeping of Sagara's Vow,' in the Sagara narrative, in the third section of the middle part, as spoken by Vayu, in the glorious Brahmanda Mahapurana.
बलेन महता युक्तो विदर्भानभ्यवर्त्तत
Endowed with great strength, he set out towards Vidarbha.
केशिन्याख्यामनुपमामनुरूपां न्यवेदयत्
He conveyed to Keśinī an unparalleled and fitting proposal.
शुभे मुहूर्ते केशिन्याः पार्णिं जग्राह भूमिपः
At an auspicious moment, the king took Keśinī’s hand.
विदर्भराज्ञा संमन्त्र्य ततो गन्तुं प्रजक्रमे
After conferring with the king of Vidarbha, he then prepared to depart.
निष्क्रम्य तत्पुराद्राजा शूरसेनानुपेयिवान्
Leaving that city, the king proceeded to Śūrasena.
धनौघैस्तर्पितस्तैश्च मधुराया विनिर्ययौ
Honored with abundant wealth by them, he departed from Madhurā.
करैश्च स नृपान्सर्वांश्चक्रे संकेतगानपि
With tribute, he made all the kings his allies.
अनुजज्ञे नरपतिः समस्ताननुयायिनः
The king permitted all his followers to accompany him.
शनैरपीडयन्देशान्स्वराज्यमुपजग्मिवान्
Gradually traversing the lands, he attained his own kingdom.
नानाजनपदैस्तूर्ममयोध्यां समुपागमत्
With throngs from various regions, he approached Ayodhyā.
नगरीं तामलञ्चक्रे महोत्सवसमुत्सुकः
Eager for a great festival, he adorned that city.
सिक्तसंमृष्टभूभागा पूर्णकुम्भशतावृता
The ground was sprinkled and swept, surrounded by hundreds of full pots.
सर्वत्रागरुधूपाञढ्या विचित्रकुसुमोज्ज्वला
Everywhere was filled with fragrant incense and bright with various flowers.
प्रसूनलाजवर्षैश्च स्वलङ्कृतमहापथा
The main roads were beautifully decorated, with showers of flowers and rice grains.
संबूजिताशेषवास्तुदेवतागृहमालिनी
All the shrines of the household deities were festooned and honored.
पौरजानपदैर्त्दृष्टैः सर्वतः समलङ्कृता
Adorned on all sides by the city and country folk who had gathered.
