ततो गत्वा ततः श्राद्धे यथाशास्त्रमरिन्दमः
Then, having gone there, the subduer of enemies performed the śrāddha according to the scriptures.
शैवं तत्र परं स्थानं चन्द्रपादमिति स्मृतम्
There, the supreme Śaiva place is known as Candrapāda.
यत्रार्चिताः स्वकुलजैर्यथाशक्ति मनागपि
There, the ancestors were worshipped by their own descendants, each according to their ability, even if only a little.
पितॄनुद्दिश्य तत्रासौ तर्प्पितेषु द्विजातिषु
There, for the sake of the ancestors, when the twice-born were satisfied with offerings—
ततस्तत्पितरः सर्वे पितृलोकादुपागताः
Then all those ancestors came from the world of the ancestors.
अथ संप्रीतमनसः समेत्य भृगुनन्दनम्
With minds filled with joy, they approached the descendant of Bhṛgu.
महत्कर्म कृतं वीर भवतान्यैः सुदुष्करम्
O hero, you have performed a great deed, exceedingly difficult for others.
अस्माकमक्षयां प्रीतिं तथापि त्वं न यच्छसि
Even so, you do not grant us everlasting satisfaction.
क्षेत्रस्यास्य प्रभावेण भक्त्या च तव दर्शनम्
By the power of this sacred place and through your devotion, you have obtained this vision.
त्समात्त्वं वीरहत्यादिपापप्रशमनाय हि
Therefore, you have come for the pacification of sins such as the slaying of warriors.
वधाच्च विनिवर्तस्व क्षत्रियाणामतः परम्
Now refrain from further destruction of the Kshatriyas.
तन्निमित्तं तु मरणं पितुस्ते विहितं पुरा
The death of your father was ordained long ago for this very reason.
निमित्तमात्रमेवेह सर्वः सर्वस्य चैतयोः
Here, everyone and everything is merely an instrument of fate for all events.
कालानुवृत्तं बलवान्नृलोको नात्र संशयः
The world of men follows the course of time, which is powerful—of this there is no doubt.
शक्यते वत्स सर्वो ऽपि यतः शक्त्या स्वकर्मकृत्
O child, everyone is able to act only according to their own capacity and deeds.
शममा प्नुहि भद्रं ते स ह्यस्माकं परं बलम्
Seek peace; may good be yours, for that is our highest strength.
स चापि तद्वचः सर्वं प्रतिजग्राह सादरम्
He respectfully accepted all those words.
प्रययौ च तदा रामस्तस्मात्सिद्धवनाश्रमम्
Then Rama departed from there to the hermitage in the Siddha forest.
तपसे धृतसंकल्पो बभूव स महामनाः
With firm resolve for asceticism, that great-minded one became steadfast.
पुनरागमसंकेतं कृत्वा प्रास्थापयत्तदा
Having made an agreement to return again, he then sent them away.
परीत्यपृथिवीं सर्वां पितृदेवादिबूजकः
He traversed the whole earth, offering oblations to ancestors, gods, and others.
परिचक्राम राजेन्द्र लोकवृत्तमनुव्रतः
He wandered, O king, following the ways of the world.
जगाम तपसे राजन्बाह्मणैरभिसंवृतः
He went for ascetic practice, O king, surrounded by Brahmins.
निवासमात्मनो राजन्कल्पयामास धर्मवित्
The righteous king arranged a dwelling place for himself.
द्रष्टुकामाः समाजग्मुर्नियता ब्रह्मवादिनः
Desiring to see him, disciplined speakers of Brahman came together.
क्षात्रं कक्षमशेषेण दग्ध्वा शान्तमिवानलम्
Having completely burned away the Kshatriya race, as fire consumes fuel, he became calm.
अर्घ्यादिसमुदाचारैः पूजयामास भार्गवः
Bhārgava worshipped with the customary offerings such as arghya.
तेषां तस्य च संवृत्ताः कथाः पुण्या मनोहराः
There arose among them and him auspicious and delightful conversations.
हयमेधं महायज्ञमाहर्तुमुपचक्रमे
He undertook the great horse sacrifice, the Aśvamedha.
विश्वामित्रभरद्वाजमार्कण्डेयादिभिस्तथा
Along with Viśvāmitra, Bharadvāja, Mārkaṇḍeya, and others likewise.
