सहसाहोथ सारथ्यं चक्रे सारथिनां वरः
Suddenly, the best of charioteers assumed the role of charioteer.
तस्याभून्नगरी सर्वा संक्षुब्धाश्च नरद्विपाः
All his city was thrown into turmoil, and the men and elephants were agitated.
संक्षुब्धाश्चक्रुरुद्योगं संग्रामाय नृपात्मजाः
The princes, agitated, prepared for battle.
रामेण योद्धुं सहिता राजभिश्च क्रुरुद्यमम्
They, together with the kings, fiercely resolved to fight with Rāma.
राममासादयामासुः पतङ्गा इव पावकम्
They rushed upon Rāma like moths into a fire.
युयुधे पार्थिवैः सर्वैः समरे ऽमितविक्रमः
He, of boundless valor, fought with all the kings in battle.
जघान यत्र संक्रुद्धो राज्ञां शतमुदारधीः
There, in his wrath, the noble-minded one slew a hundred kings.
त्रणेन पातयामास क्षितौ क्षत्रियमण्डलम्
With his axe he struck down the circle of warriors to the ground.
हतशिष्टा नृपतयो दुद्रुवुः सर्वतोदिशम्
The surviving kings fled in all directions.
जघान शतशो राज्ञः शूराञ्छरवराग्निना
He slew hundreds of heroic kings with the fire of his arrows.
उदैरयद्भार्गवो ऽस्त्रं कालाग्निसदृशप्रभम्
Bhārgava unleashed a weapon blazing like the fire of destruction.
पुरीं सहस्त्यश्वनरां स ददाहास्त्रपावकः
With the fire of his weapon, he burned the city along with its elephants, horses, and men.
जीवनाय जगामाशु वीतिहोत्रो भयातुरः
For the sake of survival, Vītihotra, terrified, quickly departed.
प्राशयानो ऽखिलान् लोकान् साक्षात्काल इवान्तकः
Consuming all the worlds, he was like Death himself in visible form.
जगामरथघोषेण कंपयन्निव मेदिनीम्
He went forth with the roar of his chariot, as if shaking the earth.
महेन्द्राद्रिं ययौ रामस्तपसे धतमानसः
Rāma, with mind set on austerity, went to Mount Mahendra.
प्रत्येत्य भूयस्तद्धत्यै बद्धदीक्षो धृतव्रतः
Returning again for their destruction, he undertook vows with firm resolve.
निजघान पुनर्भूमौ राज्ञ शतसहस्रशः
Once more on earth, he struck down hundreds of thousands of kings.
षट्चतुष्टयवर्षान्तं तपस्तेपे पुनश्च सः
For twenty-four years, he performed austerities again.
जघान भूमौ निःशेषं साक्षात्काल इवान्तकः
He destroyed all on earth, like Death himself in manifest form.
निघ्नंश्चचार पृथिवीं वर्षद्वयमनारतम्
Slaying, he roamed the earth without ceasing for two years.
त्रिः सप्तकृत्वः पृथिवी तेन निःक्षत्रिया कृता
By him, the earth was made thrice seven times devoid of kṣatriyas.
तावद्रामेण तस्मात्तु क्षत्रमुत्सादितं भुवि
Thus, by Rāma, the kṣatriya race was eradicated from the earth.
इति श्रीब्रह्माण्डे महापुराणे वायुप्रोक्ते मध्यमभागे तृतीय उपोद्धातपादे भार्गवचरिते षट्चत्वारिंशत्त मो ऽध्यायः
Thus ends the forty-sixth chapter, the Bhārgava narrative, in the third section of the middle part of the venerable Brahmāṇḍa Mahāpurāṇa, as spoken by Vāyu.
षट्सहस्रद्वयं रामो जीवग्राहं गृहीतवान्
Rāma seized alive twelve thousand men.
स जगाम महातेजाः कुरुक्षेत्रं तपोमयम्
That mighty one went to Kurukṣetra, filled with austerity.
सुखावगाहतीर्थानि तानि चक्रे समन्ततः
He made those sacred bathing places all around pleasant for immersion.
सरांसि तानि वै पञ्च पूरयामास भार्गवः
Bhārgava filled those five lakes.
पितॄन्संतर्पयामास यथाशास्त्रमतन्द्रितः
He satisfied the ancestors, untiring, according to the scriptures.
ब्राह्मणैः सह मातुश्च तत्र चक्रे यथोदितम्
There, together with the brāhmaṇas and his mother, he performed the prescribed rites.
