जग्मुस्तृषार्त्ता मध्याह्ने सरितं नर्मदामनु
Afflicted by thirst at midday, they went along the Narmadā river.
गच्छन्तो ददृशुर्मार्गो जमदग्नेरथाश्रमम्
As they proceeded, they saw the hermitage of Jamadagni on the path.
कस्येदमिति पप्रच्छुर्भाविकर्मप्रचोदिताः
Prompted by fate, they asked, 'Whose is this?'
वसत्यस्मिन्सुतो यस्य रामः शस्त्रभृतां वरः
In this place dwells his son, Rāma, the foremost among wielders of weapons.
क्रोधं प्रसङ्यानृशंस्यं पूर्ववैरमनुस्मरन्
Recalling previous enmity, anger, and cruelty arose.
वैर निर्यातनं किं तु करिष्यामो दिशाधुना
But now, what act of vengeance shall we carry out in this direction?
प्रजाघ्निरे प्रयातेषु मुनिवीरेषु सर्वतः
The people were slain as the noble sages departed in every direction.
प्रययुस्ते दुरात्मानः सबलाः स्वपुरीं प्रति
The wicked ones, with their forces, returned to their own city.
परिवार्य महाराज रुरुदुः शोककर्शिताः
Surrounding him, O great king, they wept, worn down by grief.
पपात मूर्च्छिता सद्यो लतेवाशनिताडिता
She fell unconscious at once, like a creeper struck by lightning.
दूरप्रनष्टसंज्ञेव सद्यः प्राणैर्व्ययुज्यत
As if her awareness had vanished far away, she immediately parted from life.
न्यपतन्मूर्च्छिता भूमौ निमग्नाः शोकसागरे
Unconscious, they collapsed to the ground, submerged in the ocean of sorrow.
समेत्याश्वासयामासुस्तुल्यदुःखाः सुतान्मुने
Coming together, those equally afflicted comforted the sage's sons.
आधक्षुर्वचसा तेषामग्नौ पित्रोः कलेवरे
With words of lament, they placed the bodies of their parents in the fire.
पित्रोर्मरणदुःखेन पीड्यमाना दिवानिशम्
Tormented day and night by the pain of their parents' death.
निवृत्तस्तपसः सख्या सहागादाश्रमं पितुः
Having ceased their austerities and friendships, they went together to their father's hermitage.
भार्गवचरिते पञ्चचत्वारिंशत्तमोध्यायः
Chapter forty-five of the Bhārgava narrative.
राजपुत्रव्यवसितं पित्रौः स्वर्गतिमेव च
The resolve of the prince and the ascent of his parents to heaven.
तन्मृतेरेव मरणं श्रुत्वा मातुश्च केवलम्
Hearing only of their death, and that of his mother.
तमथाश्वासयामास तुल्यदुःखो ऽकृतव्रणः
Then, he comforted him, sharing the same grief, though unscarred.
युक्तिलौकिकदृष्टान्तैस्तच्छोकं संव्यशामयत्
With examples from reason and worldly experience, he soothed that sorrow.
प्रययौ सहितः सख्या भ्रातॄणां तु दिदृक्षया
He departed together with his companions, desiring to see his brothers.
शोकामषयुतस्तैश्च सह त्स्थौ दिनत्रयम्
Joined by them, burdened with grief, he stayed for three days.
बभूव सहसा सर्वलोकसंहरणक्षमः
Suddenly, he became capable of destroying all the worlds.
दृढीचकार हृदये सर्वक्षत्रवधोद्यतः
He steeled his heart, resolved to destroy all the warriors.
करिष्ये तर्पणं पित्रोरिति निश्चित्य भार्गवः
Having decided, 'I will perform the oblation for my ancestors,' Bhārgava made up his mind.
प्रययौ तदनुज्ञातः कृत्वा संस्थांपितुः क्रियाम्
Then, having been permitted, he departed after performing the funeral rites for the deceased.
तद्बाह्योपवने स्थित्वा सस्मार स महोदरम्
Standing in the outer grove, he remembered Mahodara.
प्रेषयामास रामाय सर्वसंहननानि च
He sent all the weapons to Rāma.
गृहीत्वापूरयच्छङ्खं रुद्रदत्तममित्रजित्
Taking the conch given by Rudra, the subduer of foes sounded it.
