आगतस्तव सान्निध्यमकृतव्रणसंयुतः
He came into your presence, accompanied by Akṛtavraṇa.
जमदग्निरुवाचेदं रामं शत्रुनिबर्हणम्
Jamadagni spoke these words to Rāma, the destroyer of enemies:
प्रयश्चित्तं ततस्तावद्यथावत्कर्तुमर्हसि
Therefore, you should properly perform expiation now.
प्रायश्चित्तं तु तद्योग्यं त्वं मे निर्देष्टुमर्हसि
You ought to instruct me regarding the proper expiation.
शाकमूलफलाहारो द्वादशाब्दं तपश्चर
Sustain yourself on roots, bulbs, and fruits, and practice austerity for twelve years.
प्रययौ तपसे राजन्नकृतव्रणसंयुतः
O King, accompanied by Akṛtavraṇa, he went to undertake austerity.
कृत्वाऽश्रमपदं तस्मिंस्तपस्तेपे सुदुश्चरम्
Having established an āśrama there, he performed very difficult austerities.
निन्ये वर्षाणि कति चिद्रामस्तस्मिन्महामनाः
Rāma, of great resolve, spent several years there.
सगरोपाख्याने भार्गवचरिते चतुश्चत्वारिंशत्तमो ऽध्यायः

मृगयामगमच्छूरः शूरसेनादिभिः सह
The valiant one went hunting, together with Śūrasena and others.
जग्मुस्तृषार्त्ता मध्याह्ने सरितं नर्मदामनु
Afflicted by thirst at midday, they went along the Narmadā river.
गच्छन्तो ददृशुर्मार्गो जमदग्नेरथाश्रमम्
As they proceeded, they saw the hermitage of Jamadagni on the path.
कस्येदमिति पप्रच्छुर्भाविकर्मप्रचोदिताः
Prompted by fate, they asked, 'Whose is this?'
वसत्यस्मिन्सुतो यस्य रामः शस्त्रभृतां वरः
In this place dwells his son, Rāma, the foremost among wielders of weapons.
क्रोधं प्रसङ्यानृशंस्यं पूर्ववैरमनुस्मरन्
Recalling previous enmity, anger, and cruelty arose.
वैर निर्यातनं किं तु करिष्यामो दिशाधुना
But now, what act of vengeance shall we carry out in this direction?
प्रजाघ्निरे प्रयातेषु मुनिवीरेषु सर्वतः
The people were slain as the noble sages departed in every direction.
प्रययुस्ते दुरात्मानः सबलाः स्वपुरीं प्रति
The wicked ones, with their forces, returned to their own city.
परिवार्य महाराज रुरुदुः शोककर्शिताः
Surrounding him, O great king, they wept, worn down by grief.
पपात मूर्च्छिता सद्यो लतेवाशनिताडिता
She fell unconscious at once, like a creeper struck by lightning.
दूरप्रनष्टसंज्ञेव सद्यः प्राणैर्व्ययुज्यत
As if her awareness had vanished far away, she immediately parted from life.
न्यपतन्मूर्च्छिता भूमौ निमग्नाः शोकसागरे
Unconscious, they collapsed to the ground, submerged in the ocean of sorrow.
समेत्याश्वासयामासुस्तुल्यदुःखाः सुतान्मुने
Coming together, those equally afflicted comforted the sage's sons.
आधक्षुर्वचसा तेषामग्नौ पित्रोः कलेवरे
With words of lament, they placed the bodies of their parents in the fire.
पित्रोर्मरणदुःखेन पीड्यमाना दिवानिशम्
Tormented day and night by the pain of their parents' death.
निवृत्तस्तपसः सख्या सहागादाश्रमं पितुः
Having ceased their austerities and friendships, they went together to their father's hermitage.
भार्गवचरिते पञ्चचत्वारिंशत्तमोध्यायः
Chapter forty-five of the Bhārgava narrative.
राजपुत्रव्यवसितं पित्रौः स्वर्गतिमेव च
