उपोद्धातपादे भार्गवचरिते त्रिचत्वारिंशत्तमो ऽध्यायः
This is the forty-third chapter in the section on Bhārgava's deeds, in the Upoddhāta portion.
समाजगाम धर्मात्माकृतव्रणसमन्वितः
The righteous-souled one, accompanied by Akṛtavraṇa, arrived.
व्रजन्तं भार्गवं मार्गे प्राणरक्षणतत्पराः
Those intent on protecting their lives saw Bhārgava as he walked along the path.
शान्तसत्त्वसमाकीर्णं वेदध्त्रनिनिनादितम्
It was filled with those of peaceful nature and resounded with the chanting of the Vedas.
समं च रन्ति संहृष्टा भयं त्यक्त्वा सुदूरतः
Together, rejoicing, they abandoned fear from afar.
उन्नदन्ति मयूराश्च नृत्यन्ति च महीपने
Peacocks cried out and danced, O King.
जलाञ्जलीन्प्रक्षिपद्भिः क्रियते भूर्चलाविला
The earth became muddy and trembled as people poured handfuls of water.
अभ्यस्यन्ते मुदा युक्तैर्ब्रह्मचर्यव्रते स्थितैः
Those established in the vow of celibacy practiced with joy and discipline.
प्रविवेश शनै राजन्नकृतव्रणसंयुतः
O King, accompanied by Akṛtavraṇa, he entered slowly.
द्विजैश्च सत्कृतो रामः परं हर्षमुपागतः
Rāma, honored by the twice-born, experienced supreme joy.
ददर्श पितरं रामो जमदग्निं तपोनिधिम्
Rama beheld his father, Jamadagni, the repository of austerity.
पपात चरणोपान्ते ह्यष्टाङ्गालिङ्गितावनिः
He fell at his feet, embracing the ground with eight limbs.
जग्राह चरणौ चापि विधिवत्सज्जनाग्रणीः
The foremost among the virtuous, in accordance with custom, took hold of his feet.
उवाच प्रणतो वाक्यं तयोः संहर्षकारणम्
Having bowed, he spoke words that brought joy to both.
कार्त्तवीर्यो हतो युद्धे समुत्रबलवाहनः
Kartavirya, mighty in battle and possessing a vast army, has been slain.
तस्य दण्डो मया दत्तः प्रसह्य मुनिपुङ्गव
O eminent sage, I have inflicted punishment upon him by force.
तं नमस्कृत्य विधिवत्स्वकार्यं प्रत्यवेदयम्
Having duly saluted him, I informed him of my accomplishment.
व्रज स्वकार्यसिद्ध्यर्थं शिवलोकं सनातनम्
Go, for the fulfillment of your purpose, to the eternal realm of Shiva.
गतवाञ्छिवलोकं वै हरदर्शनकाङ्क्षया
I went to the realm of Shiva, desiring to behold Hara.
नमस्कृतो मया देवो वाञ्छितार्थ प्रदायकः
I worshipped the god, who grants the desired objects.
मया समाहितधिया स सर्वं श्रुतवानपि
With concentrated mind, I listened to everything from him.
त्रैलोक्यविजयं नाम कवचं सर्वसिद्धिदम्
The armor called 'Victory over the Three Worlds' bestows all accomplishments.
तत्राहं साधयित्वा तु कवचं हृष्टमानसः
There, having accomplished the armor, I was filled with joy.
तत्र तौ तु मया दृष्टौ द्वारे स्कन्दविनायकौ
There, at the gate, I saw Skanda and Vinayaka.
स मामवेक्ष्य गामपो विशन्तं त्वरयान्वितम्
He, seeing me hastening to enter, observed me.
मम तेन पितस्तत्र वाग्युद्धं हस्तकर्षणम्
There, my father engaged in a verbal duel and hand-to-hand contest with him.
स तज्ज्ञात्वा समुद्गृह्य मामधश्चोर्द्ध्वमेव च
Knowing this, he seized me, both below and above.
तं दृष्ट्वातिक्रुधा क्षिप्तः कुठारो हि मया ततः
Seeing him, greatly enraged, I hurled my axe at him.
पार्वती तत्र रुष्टाभूत्तदा कृष्णः समागतः
There, Pārvatī became angry, and at that time Kṛṣṇa arrived.
मह्यं कृष्मो जगामाथ तेन मैत्रीं विधाय च
Then Kṛṣṇa came to me, and after making friendship with him—
