परितो मण्डलं चक्रुर्भार्गवस्य महात्मनः
They surrounded the great-souled Bhārgava in a circle.
विरेजे भगवान्साक्षाद्यथा नाभिस्तु चक्रगा
The Blessed Lord shone forth there, just as the navel is encircled by the discus.
रेजुश्च गोपी गणमध्यसंस्थः कृष्णो यथा ताः परितो भ्रमन्त्यः
And they shone, circling around, like the gopīs about Kṛṣṇa standing in their midst.
समाकिरन्नन्दनमाल्यवर्षैः समन्ततो राममहीनवीर्यम्
They covered Rāma, mighty in valor, all around with showers of divine garlands.
तौर्यत्रिकस्येव शरक्षतानि भान्तीव यद्वन्नखदन्तपाताः
As wounds from arrows in the musical contest gleam, so did the marks of nails and teeth.
एवं प्रवृत्तं नृपयुद्धमण्डलं पश्यन्ति देवा भृशविस्मिताक्षः
Thus, as the circle of royal battle unfolded, the gods looked on, their eyes filled with great astonishment.
पृथक्चकारातिब लांस्तु मण्डलद्विच्छिद्य पङ्क्तिं प्रभुरात्तचापः
The Lord, having taken up his bow, separated the lines, breaking through the circle.
शूरो वृषास्यो वृषशूरसेनौ जयध्वजश्चापि विभिन्नधैर्याः
The valiant Vṛṣāsya, Vṛṣaśūra's army, and Jayadhvaja, their courage shattered.
पृथग्गतास्ते सुपरीप्सवो नृपा न को ऽपि कांस्विद्ददृशे भृशार्त्तः
Those kings, each departing separately, greatly desired victory; none was seen, so afflicted.
समन्वितो ऽसावकृतव्रणेन सस्नौ मुदागत्य च नर्मदायाम्
He, uninjured, bathed joyfully in the Narmadā, having arrived there.
प्रतस्थे द्रष्टुमुर्वीश शिवं कैलासवासिनम्
He set out to see Śiva, the Lord of the earth, who dwells on Kailāsa.
मनोयायी महात्मासावकृतव्रणसंयुतः
The great-souled one, accompanied by those uninjured, traveled by mind.
ददर्श तत्र नगरीं महतीमलकाभिधम्
There he saw a great city called Malaka.
नानारुपधरैर्यक्षैः शोभितां चित्रभूषणैः
Adorned by yakṣas of various forms, with splendid ornaments.
दीर्घिकाभिः सुदीर्घाभिस्तडागैश्चोपशोभिताम्
Beautified with very long pools and lakes.
तत्र देवाङ्गनास्नानमुक्तकुङ्कुमपिञ्जरम्
There, the bathing of divine women left a saffron hue.
यत्र संगीतसंनादा श्रूयन्ते तत्रतत्र ह
There, the sounds of music are heard everywhere.
तां दृष्ट्वा भार्गवो राजन्मुदा परमया युतः
Seeing that, Bhārgava, O king, was filled with supreme joy.
ततो ददर्श राजेन्द्र स्निग्धच्छायं महावटम्
Then, O king, he saw a great banyan tree with gentle shade.
ददर्ंश तत्र प्राकारं शतयोजनमण्डलम्
There he saw a wall, circular, a hundred yojanas in extent.
नन्दीश्वरं महाकालं रक्ताक्षं विकटोदरम्
He saw Nandīśvara, Mahākāla, with red eyes and a monstrous belly.
मन्दारं भैरवं बाणं रुरुं भैरवमेव च
Mandāra, Bhairava, Bāṇa, Ruru, and Bhairava himself.
सिद्धेन्द्रनाथरुद्रांश्च विद्याधरमहोरगान्
Siddhas, Indras, Nāthas, Rudras, Vidyādharas, and great serpents.
वेतालान्दानवेन्द्रांश्च योगीन्द्रांश्च जटाधरान्
Vetālas, chiefs of Dānavas, Yogis, and those with matted hair.
दृष्ट्वा नन्द्या५या तत्र प्रविष्टो ऽन्तर्मुदान्वितः
Seeing Nandā’s wife there, he entered within, filled with joy.
चतुर्योजनविस्तीर्णं तत्र प्राग्द्वारसंस्थितौ
There, at the eastern gate, was a space four yojanas wide.
ननाम भार्गवस्तौ द्वौ शिवतुल्यपराक्रमौ
Bhārgava bowed to those two, whose valor was equal to Śiva’s.
रत्नसिंहासनस्थाश्च रत्नभूषमभूषिताः
Seated on jeweled thrones, they were adorned with jeweled ornaments.
विनायको महाराज क्षणं तिष्ठेत्युवाच ह
The lord of the Gaṇas said, ‘O great king, wait here for a moment.’
ईश्वराज्ञां गृहीत्वाहमत्रागत्यक्षणान्तरे
Having received the command of the Lord, I came here in an instant.
