ध्यानप्रभावेण ततस्तु तस्य ब्रह्मास्त्रयुग्मं विगतप्रभावम्
Then, by the power of meditation, the pair of Brahma missiles lost their force.
स जामदग्न्यो महातां महीयान्स्रष्टुं तथा पालयितुं निहन्तुम्
That son of Jamadagni, great among the mighty, was able to create, protect, and destroy.
धनुर्द्धरः शूरतमो महस्वान्सदग्रणीः संसदि तथ्यवक्ता
The bearer of the bow, foremost among heroes, radiant, leader in the assembly, and speaker of truth.
एवं नृलोके प्रथयन्स्वभावं सर्वाणि कल्यानि करोति नित्यम्
Thus, displaying his nature among men, he always performs all auspicious deeds.
एवं स रामः प्रथितप्रभावः प्रशामयित्वा तु तदस्त्रयुग्मम्
So Rāma, renowned for his power, having subdued that pair of missiles,
तुणीरतः पत्रियुगं गृहीत्वा पुङ्खे निधायाथ धनुर्ज्यकायाम्
He took a pair of feathered arrows from his quiver, placed them on the shaft, and set them upon the bowstring.
स कृत्तकर्णो नृपतिर्महात्मा विनिर्जिताशेषजगत्प्रवीरः
That king, Kṛttakarṇa, great-souled, conqueror of all the world's heroes,
क्षणं धराधीशतनुर्विवर्णा गतानुभावा नृपतेर्बभूव
For a moment, the body of the lord of the earth became pale and devoid of strength.
ततः स राजा निजवीर्यवैभवं समस्तलोकाधिकतां प्रयातम्
Then that king, his own valor and glory having surpassed all the worlds, departed.
दध्यौ पुनर्मीलितलोचनो नृपौ दत्तं तमात्रेयकुलप्रदीपम्
Again, the king, eyes closed in meditation, reflected upon the gift—the lamp of the Ātreya lineage.
यदास्य हृद्येष महानुभावो दत्तः प्रयातो न हि दर्शनं तदा
When that great-souled one, Datta, departed from his heart, he was no longer seen.
स ध्यायमानो ऽपि न चाजगाम दत्तो मनोगोचरमस्य राजन्
Even though he meditated, Datta did not come; he did not enter the king’s mind, O ruler.
एवं यदात्रेस्तनयो महात्मा दृष्टो न च ध्यानपथे नृपेण
Thus, when Atri’s son, the great-souled one, was not seen by the king on the path of meditation,
तं शोकमग्नं नृपतिं महात्मा रामो जगादाखिलचित्तदर्शी
Rama, knower of all minds, spoke to the king who was sunk in sorrow.
यस्ते वरायाभवमादिसर्गे स एव चाहं तंव सादनाय
I am the same one who became the boon-giver at the beginning of creation; I am here for your destruction.
सर्वो हि लोकः स्वकृतं भुनक्ति शुभाशुभं दैवकृतं विपाके
Indeed, every being experiences the results of their own actions, auspicious or inauspicious, when fate matures.
यत्ते सुपुण्यं बहुजन्मसंचितं तेनेह दत्तस्य वरार्हपात्रम्
The great merit you have accumulated over many births has made you a worthy recipient of Datta’s gift here.
गुरुर्विमत्यापकृतस्त्वया मे यतस्ततः कर्णनिकृन्तनं ते
Because you have insulted my teacher with your arrogance, your ear will be cut off.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा स भृगुर्महात्मा नियोज्य बाणं च विकृष्य चापम्
Having spoken thus, the great-souled Bhrigu readied an arrow and drew his bow.
तद्वीक्ष्य कर्मास्य मुनेः सुतस्य स चार्जुनो हैहयवंशधर्त्ता
Seeing the act of the sage’s son, Arjuna, the lord of the Haihaya lineage,
शूलशक्तिगदाचक्रखढ्गपट्टिशतोमरैः
With spears, javelins, maces, discs, swords, axes, and darts,
स रामो लाघवेनैव संप्रक्षिप्तान्यनेन च
Rama, with swiftness, cast them all aside.
स राजा वार्युपस्पृश्य ससर्जाग्नेयमुत्तमम्
The king, touching water for purification, released the supreme fire weapon.
गान्धर्वं विदधे राजा वायव्येनाहनद्विभुम्
The king performed the Gandharva weapon and struck the mighty one with the wind weapon.
दत्तेन दत्तं यच्छूलमव्यर्थं मन्त्रपूर्वकम्
With Datta’s gift, he released the infallible spear, preceded by mantra.
तच्छूलं शतसूर्याभमनिवार्यं सुरासुरैः
That spear, shining like a hundred suns, could not be resisted by gods or demons.
मूर्ध्नि तद्भार्गवस्याथ निपपात महीपते
O king, it fell upon Bhargava’s head.
मूर्च्छामवाप राजेन्द्र पपात च हरिं स्मरन्
The king lost consciousness and fell, remembering Hari.
समाजग्मुः पुरस्कृत्य ब्रह्मविष्णुमहेश्वरान्
They arrived, leading Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Maheśvara at the forefront.
भार्गवं जीवयामास संजीवन्या स विद्यया
He revived Bhārgava with that very science of resurrection.
