ताराभिधायै शिवतत्परायै गणेश्वराराधितपादुकायै
To her called Tara, devoted to Shiva, whose sandals are worshipped by the lord of the Ganas.
जगद्धितायास्तपुरत्रयायै बालादिकायै त्रिपुराभिधायै
To her who is the benefactress of the world, ruler of the three cities, beginning as a girl, known as Tripura.
बकाननायै बहुसाख्यदायै विध्वस्तनानासुरदान्वायै
To her with the face of a crane, giver of many names, destroyer of various demon hosts.
पीतांबरायै पवनाशुगायै शुभप्रदायै शिवसंस्तुतायै
To her clad in yellow garments, swift as the wind, bestower of auspiciousness, praised by Shiva.
लघुक्रमायै ललिताभिधायै लेखाधिपायै लवणाकरायै
To her of light steps, called Lalita, ruler of the script, and mistress of the salt ocean.
रमाभिधायै रतिसुप्रियायै रोगापहायै रचिताखिलायै
To her called Rama, greatly beloved by Rati, remover of diseases, and creator of all.
नमो नमस्ते परतः पुरस्तात् पार्श्वाधरोर्ध्वं च नमो नमस्ते
Salutations, salutations to You from behind, from before, from the sides, from below and above; salutations, salutations to You.
प्रसीद देवेशि मम प्रतिज्ञां पुरा कृतां पालय भद्रकालि
Be gracious, O Goddess of the gods; uphold the vow You made to me before, O Bhadrakali.
एवं स्तुता तदा देवी भद्रकाली तरस्विनी
Thus praised at that time, the goddess Bhadrakali, powerful in might—
वत्स राम महाभाग प्रीतास्मि तव सांप्रतम्
"Child Rama, greatly fortunate one, I am pleased with you now."
मातर्यदि वरो देयस्त्वया मे भक्तव त्सले
"O Mother, if a boon is to be given by you to me, devoted as I am—"
इति मे ऽभिहितं देवि कुरु प्रीतेन चेतसा
"Thus I have spoken, O Goddess; fulfill it with a joyful heart."
आग्नेयास्त्रेण राजेन्द्रं सुचन्द्रं नय मद्गृहम्
With the Agneya weapon, lead King Suchandra to my abode.
इत्युक्तमाकर्ण्य स भार्गवेन्द्रो देव्याः प्रियं कर्तुमथोद्यतो ऽभूत्
Hearing this, the lord of the Bhargavas then prepared to do the goddess's wish.
अस्त्रं प्रयुक्तं नृपतेर्वधाय रामेण राजन् प्रसभं तदा तत्
Then, O King, Rama forcefully employed the weapon for the destruction of the king.
ततस्तु रामेण कृतप्रणामा सा भद्रकालो जगदादिकर्त्री
Thereupon, after Rama had bowed, Bhadrakali, the primal creator of the world, became invisible.
अन्तर्हिताभूदथ जामदग्न्यस्तस्थौ रणेभूपवधाभिकाङ्क्षी
Then Jamadagni's son stood on the battlefield, desiring the destruction of the king.
उपोद्धातपादे भार्गवचरिते एकोनचत्वारिंशत्तमो ऽध्यायः
Here ends the thirty-ninth chapter in the account of the Bhargava's deeds, in the section on the prelude.
तत्पुत्रः पुष्कराक्षस्तु रामं योद्धुमथागतः
Then his son, Pushkaraksha, came to fight with Rama.
अभिवीक्ष्य रणेत्युग्रं रामं कालातकोपमम्
Beholding Rama, fierce as the wrath of Time, he called out for battle.
मुहूर्त्तं जामदग्न्यो ऽपि बाणैः संझदितो ऽभवत्
For a moment, Jamadagni's son too was struck by a shower of arrows.
शरबन्धान्महाराज समुदैक्षत सर्वतः
O great king, he saw himself surrounded on all sides by a barrage of arrows.
क्रोधमाहारयामास दिधक्षन्निव पावकः
He summoned up his anger, as if he were fire wishing to burn.
ततो मेघाः समुत्पन्ना गर्जन्तो भैरवान्नवान्
Then clouds arose, roaring with dreadful, fearsome sounds.
पुष्कराक्षो महावीर्यो वायव्यास्त्रुमवासृजत्
The lotus-eyed, of great valor, released the wind weapon.
अथ रामो भृशं क्रुद्धो ब्राह्मं तत्राभिसंदधे
Then Rama, greatly enraged, prepared the Brahma weapon there.
ब्राह्म सो ऽप्याहितं दृष्ट्वा दण्डाहत इवारगः
Seeing the Brahma weapon deployed, he was struck like one hit by a staff, and became powerless.
रामस्याधावतस्तत्र पुष्कराक्षो धनुर्धरः
As Rama advanced there, Puṣkarākṣa, the wielder of the bow, rushed forward.
एकैकेन च बाणेन हृदि शीर्षे भुजद्वये
With a single arrow each, he struck the heart, head, and both arms.
स चैवं पीडीतो रामः पुष्कराक्षेण संयुगे
Thus afflicted by Puṣkarākṣa in battle, Rama was pressed hard.
