His head split open, vomiting blood again and again, he fell unconscious and died instantly.
When that king, born of the lunar dynasty, had fallen—
At that auspicious moment, with the foremost of kings slain, Rāma was filled with joy.
Here ends the thirty-eighth chapter in the Bhārgava narrative, in the section on upoddhāta.
Kārtavīrya, of great might, dispatched the lordly kings.
The lord of Niṣadha and likewise the king of Magadha—
Raining down torrents of arrows, all skilled in various kinds of warfare.
That Bhṛgu, holding the bow Pināka, blazed like a flaming tongue of fire.
That missile, released by Bhārgava Drena, was cast at the height of battle.
Then Rāma, exceedingly glorious and destroyer of foes, became enraged.
He struck Bṛhadbala with a mace, and likewise Vidarbha with his fist.
He subdued the Magadhan with blows of his feet, and the soldiers with a net of weapons.
The mighty son of Jamadagni drove Kārtavīrya away.
Having turned the Haihaya, who were skilled in discerning right and wrong, to his rear,
Hundreds from Kānyakubja, as well as those from Saurāṣṭra and Avanti,
Rāma, enveloped by a shower of arrows at the height of battle,
Remembered the deeds of Rāma, as once recounted by Hari.
At that very moment, Rāma, expert in weapons and missiles,
Rose up, eager for battle, like the sun emerging from mist.
With swift prowess, he destroyed twelve divisions of troops there.
All those groups of kings and their great armies,
The mighty Sucandra, descendant of the solar dynasty, arrived there.
There, many great heroes roared like thunderclouds.
O king, weapons and mighty missiles were employed by them.
Seizing his divine axe, dreadful as the rod of Time,
Just as a farmer cuts ripe grain and grass in a field,
The army of a hundred thousand royal warriors was seen, by Rāma, to be cut down.
There, both of them, skilled in various weapons and missiles, became agitated.
Rama hurled at him all the weapons and missiles.
Then Rama, enraged in battle, confronted Sucandra, the lord of the earth.
