लीयन्ते च पुनर्यस्मिंस्तं नमामि जगन्मयम्
I bow to him in whom all things dissolve and from whom they arise, the essence of the universe.
सोर्द्ध्वलोकं सपातालं तं नमामि हरं परम्
I bow to the supreme Hara, who encompasses the upper worlds and the nether regions.
मूर्त्तयो ऽष्टौ जगत्पूज्यास्तं यज्ञं प्रणमाम्यहम्
I bow to that sacrifice, whose eight forms are revered throughout the world.
रर्त्ता पुना रुद्रवपुस्तथान्ते तं कालरूपं शरणं प्रपद्ये
At creation, again as Rudra's form, and at the end, I seek refuge in him, the embodiment of time.
उत्थाप्य तं वामकरेण लीलया दध्रे तदा मूर्ध्नि करं कृपार्णवः
Then, raising him up with his left hand in play, the ocean of compassion placed his hand upon his head.
उवाच वामामभिवीक्ष्य चाप्युमां कृपार्द्रदृष्ट्याखिलकामपूरकः
Looking kindly upon Uma and me with eyes full of compassion, he spoke, fulfilling every desire.
विनिर्द्दिशाहं तव भक्तिभावतः प्रीतः प्रदद्यां भवतो मनोगतम्
Pleased by your devotion, I grant you, as you desire, whatever is in your mind.
पुनश्च नत्वा विबुधां पति गुरुं कृपासमुद्रं समुवाच सत्वरम्
Again, bowing swiftly, I addressed the lord of the gods, the ocean of mercy, my revered teacher.
रामो नाम जगद्वन्द्यं त्वामहं शरणं गतः
I am Rama, honored by the world; I have come to you for refuge.
तं प्रसाधय विश्वेश वाञ्छितं काममेव मे
O Lord of the universe, fulfill for me the desire I long for.
आतिथ्यं कृतवान् देव जमदग्निः पिता मम
My father Jamadagni, O god, offered you hospitality.
सा धेनुस्तं मृतं दृष्ट्वा गवां लोकं जगाम ह
That cow, seeing him dead, departed for the world of cows.
जगाम स्वपुरं पश्चान्माता मे प्रारुदद्भृशम्
Afterwards, my mother returned to her own city, weeping greatly.
आजगाम महादेव ह्यहमप्यागतो वनात्
O Mahadeva, I too came from the forest.
सांत्वयित्वा स मन्त्रज्ञो ऽजीवयत्पितरं मम
He, skilled in mantras, comforted and revived my father.
प्रतिज्ञां कृतवान्देव सात्वयन्मातरंस्वकाम्
The god made a vow, consoling my mother according to her wish.
तावत्संख्यमहं पृथ्वीं करिष्ये क्षत्रवर्जिताम्
For that many times, I will make the earth devoid of Kshatriyas.
महादेवो ह्यतो नाथ त्वत्सकाणमिहागतः
Indeed, O Lord, Mahadeva has come here as your companion.
बभूवानम्रवदनस्छिन्तयानः क्षणं तदा
He stood there, his face lowered, reflecting for a moment.
उवाच च महाराज भार्गवं वैरसाधकम्
And then, O great king, he spoke to Bhargava, the destroyer of enmity.
त्रिः सप्तकृत्वः कोपेन साहसस्ते महान्बटो
Three times seven times, O ascetic, you performed a great deed in anger.
भ्रूभङ्गलीलया येन रावणो ऽपि निराकृतः
By the mere play of his frown, even Ravana was cast down.
शक्तिरत्यर्थवीर्या च तं कथं हन्तुमिच्छसि
His power is exceedingly great; how do you wish to slay him?
न चान्यः शङ्करात्पुत्र सत्कार्यं कर्त्तुमीश्वरः
And, O son, no one but Shankara is able to accomplish such a noble task.
अभ्यधाद्भद्रया वाया जमदग्निसुतं विभुः
Then the mighty one addressed Jamadagni's son with gentle words.
दास्यामि मन्त्रं दिव्यं ते कवचं च महामते
I shall give you a divine mantra and armor, O most wise one.
त्रिः सप्तकृत्वो निर्भूपां महीं चापि करिष्यसि
You will make the earth devoid of kings three times seven times.
त्रैलोक्यविजयं नाम कवचं परमाद्भुतम्
The armor named 'Conquest of the Three Worlds' is supremely wondrous.
नारायणास्त्रमाग्नेयं वायव्यं वारुणं तथा
The Narayana missile, the Agneya, the Vayavya, and the Varuna weapons as well,
गदां शक्तिं च परशुं शूलं दण्डमनुत्तमम्
The mace, the spear, the axe, the trident, and the supreme staff,
