यथागतं ययौ विद्वान्भविष्यत्कालपर्ययात्
As he had come, the wise one departed, according to the cycle of future time.
उपोद्धातपादे भार्गवचरिते त्रिंशत्तमो ऽध्यायः

यच्चकार महावीर्य्यो राज्ञः क्रुद्धो हि कर्मणा

रामः प्रोवाच संक्रुद्धो मुञ्चञ्छ्वासान्मुहर्मुहुः
Rama, greatly enraged, spoke, repeatedly exhaling breaths.
कार्त्तवीर्यस्य यो विद्वांश्चक्रे ब्रह्मवधोद्यमम्
The wise one who undertook the effort to slay Kartavirya, a brahmin-killer.
शुभं वाप्यशुभं सर्वे प्रकुर्वन्ति विमोहिताः
All, deluded, perform both auspicious and inauspicious deeds.
कार्त्तवीर्यं निहत्याजौ पितुर्वैरं प्रसाधये
Having slain Kartavirya in battle, I will fulfill my father's vengeance.
रक्षिष्यते तथाप्येनं संहरिष्यामि नान्यथा
Even if he is protected, I will destroy him; there is no other way.
जमदग्निरुवाचेदं पुत्रं साहसभाषिणम्
Jamadagni spoke these words to his son, who spoke boldly.
यच्छ्रुत्वा मानवाः सर्वे जायन्ते धर्मकारिणः
Upon hearing this, all men become performers of righteousness.
न कस्मैचित्प्रकुप्यन्ति निन्दितास्ताडिता अपि
They do not become angry with anyone, even when insulted or struck.
तेषां चैवाक्षया लोकाः सततं साधुकारिणाम्
Their worlds are indeed inexhaustible, always belonging to those who act virtuously.
न च क्षोभमवाप्नोति स साधुः परिकीर्त्थते
And that virtuous one does not attain agitation; he is praised as a good person.
क्षमयार्ऽहणतां प्राप्ताः साधवो ब्राह्मणा वयम्
We, the virtuous brahmins, have attained worthiness through forgiveness.
तस्मान्निवारये त्वाद्य क्षमां कुरु तपश्चर
Therefore, restrain yourself today, be patient, and practice austerity.
रामः प्रोवाच पितरं क्षमाशीलमरिन्दमम्
Rama spoke to his father, the most patient among conquerors of foes.
भवता शम उद्दिष्टः साधूनां सुमहात्मनाम्
You have taught forbearance, which is the virtue of the truly great.
कर्त्तव्यो दुष्टचेष्टेषु न शमः सुखदो भवेत्
But with those of wicked conduct, forbearance should not be practiced, for it does not bring happiness.
देह्याज्ञां माननीयाद्य साधये वैरमात्मनः
Now, give me your command, worthy of honor, so that I may fulfill my enmity.
करिष्यसि यथा भावि तथा नैवान्यथा भवेत्
You will act as destined; it cannot be otherwise.
स यद्वदिष्यति विभुस्तत्कर्त्ता नात्र संशयः
Whatever the Lord commands, that will be done—of this there is no doubt.
जगाम ब्रह्मणो लोकमगम्यं प्राकृतैर्जनैः
He went to the world of Brahma, inaccessible to ordinary beings.
स्वर्णप्राकारसंयुक्तं मणिस्तंभैर्विमूषितम्
It was surrounded by walls of gold and adorned with columns of jewels.
रत्नसिंहासने रम्ये रत्नभूषणभूषितम्
On a beautiful throne of gems, embellished with jeweled ornaments.
विद्याधरीणां नृत्यं च पश्यन्तं सस्मितं मुदा
He saw the smiling Brahma, joyfully watching the dance of the Vidyadharis.
परिपूर्णतमं ब्रह्म ध्यायतं यतमानसम्
Brahma, fully complete, was absorbed in meditation with concentrated mind.
दृष्ट्वा तमव्ययं भक्त्या प्रणनाम भृगूद्वहः
Seeing that imperishable one, the best of Bhrigus bowed with devotion.
पप्रच्छ कुशलं वत्स कथमागमनं कृथाः
He asked, 'Are you well, child? For what reason have you come?'
वृत्तान्तं कार्त्तवीर्यस्य पितुः स्वस्य महात्मनः
He told the story of Kartavirya, his own great-souled father.
उवाच रामं धर्मिष्ठं परिणामसुखावहम्
He spoke to Rama, the righteous one, who brings happiness through transformation.
