न चुक्रोधाक्रोधनत्वं सतो हि परमं धनम्
He did not become angry, for freedom from anger is the highest wealth of the virtuous.
जगत्सर्वं क्षयं तस्य चिन्तयन्न प्रचुक्रुधे
Thinking that the whole world would perish because of him, he did not grow angry.
रामेणाभूत्ततो नित्यं शान्त एव महातपाः
From then on, because of Rāma, the great ascetic always remained peaceful.
निपपात महातेजा धरण्यां गतचेतनः
The one of great splendor fell to the ground, losing consciousness.
किङ्करानादिशच्छीघ्रं धेनोरानयने बलात्
He quickly ordered the attendants to bring the cow by force.
कशाभिरभिहन्यन्त चकृषुश्च निनीषया
They struck her with whips and tried to drag her away by the wheels.
हन्यमाना भृशं तैश्च चुक्रुधे च पयस्विनी
Being harshly beaten by them, the milk-giving cow became enraged.
आकृष्य पाशान् सुदृढान् कृत्वात्मानममोचयत्
Pulling at the strong ropes, she freed herself.
हुंहारवं प्रकुर्वाणा सर्वतो ऽह्यपतद्रुषा
Making a loud 'hum' sound, she rushed violently in all directions.
राजमन्त्रिबलं सर्वं व्यद्रावयदमर्षिता
In her fury, she scattered the entire force of the king, his ministers, and his army.
पश्यतां सर्वभूतानां गगनं प्रत्यपद्यत
While all beings looked on, she ascended into the sky.
प्रसह्य बद्ध्वा तद्वत्सं जग्मुरेवातिनिर्घृणाः
In the same way, the utterly merciless ones bound and took away the calf by force.
स पापस्तरसा राज्ञः सन्निधिं समुपागमत्
That sinful one quickly approached the presence of the king.
तद्व्रत्तान्तमशेषेण व्याचचक्षे ससाध्वसः
Trembling, he recounted the entire incident in detail.

His mind greatly troubled, he began to ponder in many ways.
ब्रह्मस्वहरणे वाञ्छा तद्धत्या चातिगर्हिता
The desire to seize the Brahman's wealth, and the killing of that one, are both utterly condemned.
वचनं तर्हि तां जह्यां विमूढात्मा गतत्रपः
Then, should I abandon her words, being deluded in mind and devoid of shame?
स्वपुरं प्रतिचक्राम सबलः सानुगस्ततः
Then, with his forces and followers, he returned to his own city.
आश्रमात्सहसा राजन्विनिश्चक्राम रेणुका
Suddenly, O King, Reṇukā departed from the hermitage.
निश्चेष्टं परितं भूमौ ददर्श पतिमात्मनः
She saw her husband lying motionless on the ground.
अन्वाहतेवाशनिना मूर्छितान्यपतद्भुवि
Struck as if by lightning, she fainted and fell to the earth.
पतित्वोत्थाय सा भूयः सुस्वरं प्ररुरोद ह
Having fallen, she rose again and wept aloud in a clear voice.
अश्रुपूर्ममुखी दीना पतिता शोकसागरे
Her face streaming with tears, wretched, she was plunged into an ocean of grief.
हा धिगत्यन्तशान्त त्वं नैव काङ्क्षेत चेदृशम्
Alas! Shame! O utterly peaceful one, you would never have desired such a fate.
क्षिप्त्वानाथामगाधे मां क्व च यातो ऽसि मानद
Having cast me, helpless, into this abyss, where have you gone, O giver of honor?
यासि यत्र त्वमेकाकी तत्र मां नेतुमर्हसि
Wherever you are going alone, you ought to take me there as well.
न दीर्यते महाभाग कठिनाः खलु योषितः
O blessed one, the hearts of women are indeed hard, for they do not break.
चुक्रोश रामरामेति भृशं दुःखपरिप्लुता
Overwhelmed by intense sorrow, she cried out repeatedly, 'Rāma! Rāma!'
अकृतव्रणसंयुक्तः स्वाश्रमाय न्यवर्त्तत
Unwounded and unhurt, he turned back toward his own hermitage.
