Just as branches were made by them, so those are called 'shākhās' (branches).
Therefore, those are remembered as 'shālās', and their nature as 'shāla' is thus recalled.
Therefore, houses, shālās, and palaces are designated as such.
When, along with honey, the wish-fulfilling trees were destroyed at that time,
Then, in the Tretā Yuga, the accomplishment of those (shālās) appeared.
Here, the waters from rain and those that had entered the earth,
And the small quantities of water that fell elsewhere upon the earth,
From those, plants bearing flowers, roots, and fruits, as well as herbs, were born.
And trees and bushes bearing flowers and fruits in their seasons were produced.
At the beginning of Tretā, people lived by means of those herbs.
Due to the inevitable course of events and the influence of the Tretā Yuga,
Trees, bushes, and herbs were forcibly taken according to strength.
Those beings who were born here from the mind of Brahmā,
They, being reborn, appeared again in the Tretā Yuga.
Having been shaped by their previous births, they are known for both virtue and vice.
Freed from greed and self-controlled, they dwell among those remembered (from before).
They perform actions, and those who are weaker than them also act accordingly.
Thus, when there was mutual opposition and conflict among them,
They vanished as they were being seized, just like sand slipping through the fists.
They took hold of them again by means of fruits, flowers, and also roots.
Then, overcome by hunger, they all went to Svayambhu (the Self-born).
The blessed Svayambhu Brahma, knowing their intention,
Having understood that the herbs had been consumed by the earth, he restored them again.
Then, by him, this earth was milked, and the seeds were placed upon the surface of the ground.
The herbs, after their fruits had ripened, remained under the sway of seven moments.
Priyangava, udara, koradusha, and savamaka—
Harikā, charaka, and also gama—these seventeen are remembered.
Shyamaka, nivara, jartila, and gavedhuka as well—
These are known as the fourteen herbs of village and forest.
All these fourteen, both of village and forest, are not cultivated by plough.
