अत्र मध्यं प्रशंसंति ह्रस्वं काष्ठविवर्ज्जितम्
Here, the central part is praised as being short and free from wood.
नगरादर्द्धविषकंभः खेटं पानं तदूर्द्धतः
Half the diameter of the city is the kheṭa, and above that is the pāna.
द्विक्रोशः परमा सीमा क्षेत्रसीमा चतुर्द्धनुः
The utmost boundary is two krośas; the field boundary is four dhanus.
विंशद्धनुर्ग्राममार्गः सीमामार्गो दशैव तु
The village road is twenty dhanus; the boundary road is ten.
नृवाजिरथनागानामसंबाधस्तु संचरः
The passage is unobstructed for men, horses, chariots, and elephants.
त्रिका रथ्योपरथ्याः स्युर्द्विका श्चाप्युपरत्यकाः
There are three main streets and side streets; and two secondary lanes as well.
धृतिमार्गस्तूर्द्धषष्ठं क्रमशः पदिकः स्मृतः
The path of endurance is, successively, sixty-six; the pedestrian path is so regarded.
कृतेषु तेषु स्थानेषु पुनर्गेहगृहाणि वै
When these places are established, then again houses and dwellings are constructed.
तथा कर्तुं समारब्धाश्चिंतयित्वा पुनः पुनः
Thus, having begun to build, they repeatedly considered and planned.
अत ऊर्द्ध गताश्चान्या एवं तिर्यग्गताः परा
After this, others proceeded further, and likewise those who went across.
यथा कृतास्तु तैः शाखास्त स्माच्छालास्तु ताः स्मृताः
Just as branches were made by them, so those are called 'shākhās' (branches).
तस्मात्ताश्च स्मृताः शालाः शालात्वं तासु तत्स्मृतम्
Therefore, those are remembered as 'shālās', and their nature as 'shāla' is thus recalled.
तस्माद् गृहाणि शालाश्च प्रासादाश्चैव संज्ञिता
Therefore, houses, shālās, and palaces are designated as such.
नष्टेषु मधुना सार्द्धं कल्पवृक्षेषु वै तदा
When, along with honey, the wish-fulfilling trees were destroyed at that time,
ततः प्रादुर्बभौ तासां सिद्धिस्त्रेतायुगे तदा
Then, in the Tretā Yuga, the accomplishment of those (shālās) appeared.
तासां वृष्ट्युदकानीह यानि मिष्टगतानि च
Here, the waters from rain and those that had entered the earth,
ये परस्तादपां स्तोकाः संपाताः पुथिवीतले
And the small quantities of water that fell elsewhere upon the earth,
पुष्पमूलफलिन्यस्तु ओषध्यस्ता हि जज्ञिरे
From those, plants bearing flowers, roots, and fruits, as well as herbs, were born.
ऋतुपुष्पफलाश्चैव वृक्षा गुल्माश्च जज्ञिरे
And trees and bushes bearing flowers and fruits in their seasons were produced.
तदौषधेन वर्तंते प्रजास्त्रेता मुखे तदा
At the beginning of Tretā, people lived by means of those herbs.
अवश्यभाविनार्थेन त्रेतायुगवशेन च
Due to the inevitable course of events and the influence of the Tretā Yuga,
वृक्षगुल्मौषधीश्चैव प्रसह्य तु यथाबलम्
Trees, bushes, and herbs were forcibly taken according to strength.
ब्रह्मणो मानसास्ते वै उत्पन्ना ये जनादिह
Those beings who were born here from the mind of Brahmā,
तत आवर्त्तमानास्ते त्रेतायां जज्ञिरे पुनः
They, being reborn, appeared again in the Tretā Yuga.
भाविताः पूर्वजातीषु ख्यात्या ते शुभपापयोः
Having been shaped by their previous births, they are known for both virtue and vice.
वीतलोभा जितात्मानो निवसंति स्मृतेषु वै
Freed from greed and self-controlled, they dwell among those remembered (from before).
तेषां कर्माणि कुर्वंति तेभ्यश्चैवाबलाश्च ये
They perform actions, and those who are weaker than them also act accordingly.
एवं विप्रतिपन्नेषु प्रपन्नेषु परस्परम्
Thus, when there was mutual opposition and conflict among them,
प्रनष्टा गृह्यमाणा वै मुष्टिभ्यां सिकता यथा
They vanished as they were being seized, just like sand slipping through the fists.
फलैर्गृह्णंति पुष्पैश्च तथा मूलैश्च ताः पुनः
They took hold of them again by means of fruits, flowers, and also roots.
