भूत्वा तु धार्मिकस्त्वं तु तपश्चर्तुमिहागतः
Having become righteous, you have come here to practice austerity.
यथाजिह्वं भवेन्नात्र वचसापि समीहितुम्
As the tongue moves, so should words be; here, even speech cannot be controlled.
तस्मादलं ते तपसा निष्फलेन भृगूद्वह
Therefore, O foremost of the Bhṛgus, your austerity is useless; enough of it.
याहि राम त्वमन्यत्र यत्र वा न विदुर्जनाः
Go, O Rāma, elsewhere, wherever people do not know you.
निरूप्य मनसा भूयस्तमुवाचाभिविस्मितम्
Having considered deeply in his mind, he spoke to him, filled with wonder.
इन्द्रस्येवानुभावेन वपुरालक्ष्यते तव
By the majesty of Indra, your form is unrecognizable.
सर्वज्ञस्यैव ते वाणी श्रूयते ऽतिमनोहरा
Your speech, belonging to one who knows all, is heard and is exceedingly charming.
ईशानस्तपनो ब्रह्मा वायुः सोमो गुरुर्गुहः
Īśāna, the Sun, Brahmā, Vāyu, Soma, the Guru, Guha—
अनुभावेन जातिस्ते हृदिशङ्कां तनोति मे
By your majesty, your birth causes doubt in my heart.
को वा त्वं वपुषानेन ब्रूहि मां समुपागतः
Who are you, with this form, who has approached me? Tell me.
परमात्मात्मसंभूतिरात्मारामः सनातनः
The Supreme Self, self-born, delighting in the Self, eternal—
वपुषानेन संयुक्ते भवान्भवितुमर्हति
You are worthy to be that, endowed with this form.
जात्यर्थसौष्ठवोपेता वाणी चौदार्यशालिनी
Your speech is endowed with nobility, excellence of birth and meaning.
प्रत्यक्षतामुपगतो संदेहो ऽस्मत्परीक्षया
By my examination, doubt has become manifest before my eyes.
तस्मात्तुभ्यं नमस्तस्मै सुरुपं संप्रदर्शय
Therefore, I bow to you; show me your true form.
ममानेकविधा शङ्कामुच्येत येन मानसी
By which my many kinds of doubts in my mind may be dispelled.
प्रणाशय स्वरूपस्य ग्रहणादेव केवलम्
The destruction of one's own form occurs merely by its grasping.
कस्त्वं मे दर्शयात्मानं बद्धो ऽयं ते मयाञ्जलिः
Who are you? Reveal yourself to me; my hands are joined in supplication to you.
उपविश्य ततो भूमौ ध्यानमास्ते समाहितः
Then, sitting down upon the ground, he remained absorbed in meditation.
निरुद्धप्राणसंचारो दध्यौ चिरमुदारधीः
Restraining the movement of his breath, the noble-minded one meditated for a long time.
चिन्तयामास देवेशं ध्यानदृष्ट्या जगद्गुरुम्
He contemplated the Lord of the gods, the teacher of the world, with the vision of meditation.
स्वभक्तानुग्रहकरं मृगव्याधस्वरूपिणम्
He who grants favor to his devotees, taking the form of a hunter of beasts.
ददर्श देवं तेनैव वपुषा पुरतः स्थितम्
He saw the god standing before him in that very form.
आविर्भूतं महाराज दृष्ट्वा रामः ससंभ्रमम्
O great king, seeing him manifested, Rāma became filled with awe.
पपात पादयोर्भूमौ भक्त्या तस्य महामतिः
With devotion, the wise one fell to the ground at his feet.
शरणं भव शर्वेति शङ्करेत्यसकृन्नृप
Repeatedly he cried, 'Be my refuge, O Śaṅkara, O Lord of arrows!'
राममुत्थापयामास प्रणा मावनतं भुवि
He raised Rāma up, who was bowing down to the ground in reverence.
तुष्टाव देवदेवेशं पुरः स्थित्वा कृताजलिः
Standing before the Lord of gods with joined palms, he offered praise.
नमः शर्वाय शान्ताय शाश्वताय नमोनमः
Salutations to Śarva, the peaceful, the eternal—again and again, salutations!
नमस्ते भूतनाथाय भूतवासाय ते नमः
Salutations to you, Lord of beings, abode of beings—salutations to you!
