घ्रुवं मिथ्याप्रवृत्तस्य न हि तुष्यति शङ्करः
Indeed, Śaṅkara is not pleased by the actions of one who proceeds falsely.
प्रतपत्यबुधो मर्त्त्यस्त्वां विना कः मुदुर्मते
O slow-witted one, which ignorant mortal can shine without you?
संपूज्य पूजकविद्धौ शंभोस्तव च संगमः
By properly worshipping according to the rules, there is union with Śambhu for the worshipper.
संपूजको ऽपि तस्य त्वं योग्यो नात्र विचारणा
You, too, are fit to be his worshipper—about this there is no doubt.
शिरश्छित्त्वा पुनः शंभुर्ब्रह्महत्यामवाप्तवान्
Having cut off the head, Śambhu again incurred the sin of slaying a Brahmin.
उपदिष्टो ऽसि तत्कर्तुं नोचेदेवं कथं कृथाः
You have been instructed to do that; if not so, then how did you act thus?
तपः सिद्धिरनुप्राप्ता कोलेनाल्पीयसा मुने
O sage, the accomplishment of austerity was attained by the lesser Kola.
तपोव्याजेन गहने निर्जने संप्रवर्त्तसे
Under the pretense of austerity, you proceed into the deep and solitary wilderness.
तपश्चरसि नानेन तपसा तत्प्रणश्यति
You practice austerity, but by this austerity, that (sin) is not destroyed.
मातृद्रुहामवेहि त्वं न क्वचित्किल निष्कृतिः
Know that for one who has harmed his mother, there is truly no expiation anywhere.
स्वहस्तेन कथं राम मातरं कृत्तवानसि
O Rāma, how did you cut your mother with your own hand?
त्वं पुनर्धार्मिको भूत्वा कामतो ऽन्यान्विनिन्दसि
Having again become righteous, you criticize others at will.
अपर्याप्तमहं नन्यं परं दोषविमर्शनाम्
I am insufficient, not another; I am the one who examines the faults of others.
तर्हि गर्हय मां कामं निरुप्य मनसा स्वयम्
Then, if you wish, censure me, having considered it yourself in your mind.
क्रियते प्राणिहननं निजधर्मतया मया
I commit the act of taking life as my own duty.
वर्त्तामि सापि मे वृत्तिर्विधात्रा विहिता पुरा
That conduct of mine is also a way of life ordained by the Creator from the beginning.
हनिष्ये चेत्तदधिकं तर्हि युज्येयमेनसा
If I kill beyond that, then indeed I would be subject to sin.
तदेतत्संप्रधार्य त्वं निन्दवा मां प्रशंस वा
Therefore, having considered this, either blame me or praise me as you wish.
तदेव तेन कर्त्तव्यमापद्यपि कथञ्चन
That alone must be done by him, even if he falls into difficulty in any way.
अहं तु सर्वभावेन मित्रादिभरणे रतः
As for me, with all my being, I am devoted to supporting friends and others.
भूत्वा तु धार्मिकस्त्वं तु तपश्चर्तुमिहागतः
Having become righteous, you have come here to practice austerity.
यथाजिह्वं भवेन्नात्र वचसापि समीहितुम्
As the tongue moves, so should words be; here, even speech cannot be controlled.
तस्मादलं ते तपसा निष्फलेन भृगूद्वह
Therefore, O foremost of the Bhṛgus, your austerity is useless; enough of it.
याहि राम त्वमन्यत्र यत्र वा न विदुर्जनाः
Go, O Rāma, elsewhere, wherever people do not know you.
निरूप्य मनसा भूयस्तमुवाचाभिविस्मितम्
Having considered deeply in his mind, he spoke to him, filled with wonder.
इन्द्रस्येवानुभावेन वपुरालक्ष्यते तव
By the majesty of Indra, your form is unrecognizable.
सर्वज्ञस्यैव ते वाणी श्रूयते ऽतिमनोहरा
Your speech, belonging to one who knows all, is heard and is exceedingly charming.
ईशानस्तपनो ब्रह्मा वायुः सोमो गुरुर्गुहः
Īśāna, the Sun, Brahmā, Vāyu, Soma, the Guru, Guha—
अनुभावेन जातिस्ते हृदिशङ्कां तनोति मे
By your majesty, your birth causes doubt in my heart.
को वा त्वं वपुषानेन ब्रूहि मां समुपागतः
Who are you, with this form, who has approached me? Tell me.
