व्यक्तमेवाचलेन्द्राणामधिराज्यपदे स्थितः
Clearly established in the position of ruler among the great mountains.
एवं संचिन्तयानः स हिमाद्रिवनगह्वरे
Thus reflecting, he remained in the cavern of the Himālayan forest.
आससाद वने तस्मिन्विपुले भृगुपुङ्गवः
In that vast forest, the eminent Bhṛgu approached.
कुमुदोत्पलकह्लारनिकरैरुपसोभितम्
Adorned with clusters of lotuses, water lilies, and blue lilies.
अन्यैश्च जलचैर्वक्षैः सर्वतः समलङ्कृतम्
And decorated everywhere with other aquatic flowers.
जीवजीवकचक्राह्वकुररभ्रमरोत्करैः
With flocks of jīvajīva birds, cakrāhva, kurara, and swarms of bees.
शफरीमत्स्यसंघैश्च विचरद्भिरितस्ततः
And with groups of śapharī and other fish moving here and there.
आससाद भृगुश्रेष्ठस्तत्सरोवरमुत्तमम्
The foremost Bhṛgu reached that excellent lake.
स तस्य तीरे विपुलं कृत्वाश्रमपदं शुभम्
There, on its bank, he established a spacious and auspicious hermitage.
शाकमूलफलाहारो नियतं नियतेन्द्रियः
Sustained by roots, vegetables, and fruits, he was ever restrained and master of his senses.
भृगूपदिष्टमार्गेण भक्त्या परमया युतः
Following the path taught by Bhrigu, endowed with supreme devotion,
अनिकेतः स वर्षासु शिशिरे जलसंश्रयः
Homeless during the rains, in winter he took refuge in water.
रिपून्निर्जित्य कामादीनूर्मिषषट्कं विधूय च
Having conquered enemies such as desire and others, casting off the six waves,
यमैः सनियमैश्चैव शुद्धदेहः समाहितः
With yamas and niyamas, his body purified, his mind collected,
जितपद्मासनो मौनी स्थिरचित्तो महामुनिः
Mastering the lotus posture, observing silence, firm-minded, he was a great sage.
धारणाभिः स्थिरीचक्रे मनश्चञ्चलमात्मवान्
By means of concentration, he steadied his restless mind, being self-controlled.
स्वस्थान्तः करणो मैत्रः सर्वबाधाविवर्जितः
With his inner faculties tranquil, friendly, and free from all afflictions,
ध्येयावस्थि तचित्तात्मा निश्चलेद्रियदेहवान्
His mind and self fixed on the object of meditation, with unmoving senses and body,
जपंश्च देवदेवेशं ध्यायंश्च स्वमनीषया
Reciting the names of the Lord of gods, he meditated according to his own understanding.
ततः स निष्फलं रूपमैश्वरं यन्निरञ्जनम्
Then he perceived that fruitless, lordly form which is stainless,
आनन्दमात्रमचलं व्याप्ताशेषचराचरम्
Consisting only of bliss, unmoving, pervading all that moves and is still.
नित्यं शुद्धं सदा शान्तमतीन्द्रियमनौपमम्
Eternal, pure, ever peaceful, beyond the senses, and incomparable.
इति श्रीब्रह्माण्डे महापुराणे वायुप्रोक्ते मध्यभागे तृतीये उपोद्धातपादे वसिष्ठसगरसंवादे अर्चुनोपाख्याने जामदग्न्यतपश्चरणं नाम द्वाविंशतितमो ऽध्यायः
Thus, in the glorious Brahmanda Mahapurana, as spoken by Vayu, in the third section of the middle part, in the discourse between Vasistha and Sagara, in the story of Arjuna, this is the twenty-second chapter named 'The Austerities of Jamadagni.'
रहस्येकान्तनिरतं नियतं शंसितव्रतम्
Engaged in secret and solitary practice, ever steadfast in his praised vows,
ज्ञानकर्मवयोवृद्धा महान्तः शंसितव्रताः
Elder in knowledge, action, and age, great souls firm in their vows,
ख्यापयन्तस्तपः श्रेष्ठं तस्य राजन्महात्मनः
They proclaimed the supreme austerity of that great-souled king, O ruler.
संभावयन्तस्ते रामं मुनयो वृद्धसंमताः
The sages, esteemed by the elders, honored Rāma.
दूरादेव महान्तस्ते पुण्यक्षेत्रनिवासिनः
Those great ones, dwellers in holy places, from afar—
प्रशस्य तस्य ते सर्वेप्रययुः स्वं स्वमाश्रमम्
Having praised him, all of them departed to their own hermitages.
प्रसन्नचेता नितरां बभूव नृपसत्तम
The best of kings became exceedingly joyful in mind.
