गजैराक्रन्दनादेन पूर्यमामं वनं क्वचित्
Elsewhere, the forest was filled with the loud cries of elephants.
भेद्यमानाखिलशिलागंभीरकुहरं क्वचित्

इतरेतरसंमर्दं विप्रभग्नदृषत्क्वचित्
Elsewhere, mutual collisions shattered stones with their force.
करेणुमाद्रवन्मत्तगजाकलितकाननम्
The forest was trampled by intoxicated elephants, their trunks raised.
गहनेषु गुरुत्राससाशङ्कविहरन्मृगम्
In the thickets, deer wandered cautiously, fearful of great danger.
क्रीडितं चमरीयूथैर्मन्दमन्दविचारिभिः
Elsewhere, herds of antelopes played, moving gently and slowly.
सतालनादैरुदिनैर्भृताशेषदिशामुखम्
The entire expanse was filled with the sound of loud drums.
अलक्तकरसक्लिन्नचरणाङ्कितभूतलम्
The ground was marked by footprints stained with red dye.
प्रवृत्तनृत्तं परितो विततोदग्रबर्हिभिः
All around, peacocks with splendid feathers performed lively dances.
गात्राह्लादकरैर्मन्दं वीज्यमानं वनानिलैः
The forest was gently fanned by breezes, bringing delight to the body.
आकुलीकृतपर्यन्तसहकारवनान्तरम्
The inner mango groves were made tumultuous at their edges.
अनेकविहगारावबधिरीकृतकाननम्
The forest was deafened by the cries of countless birds.
वनान्तमारुताकीर्णैरलङ्कृतमहीतलम्
The ground of the forest was adorned, filled with breezes blowing through the woods.
निर्झराणां महारावैः समन्ताद्बधिरीकृतम्
All around, the thunderous roar of waterfalls rendered the place deafening.
पाटलैर्विटपच्छायैरुपशल्यसमुत्थितैः
With clusters of pāṭala trees, their shade cast by thick branches rising from the slopes.
कपित्थपनसाशोकसहकारेगुदाशनैः
With kapittha, jackfruit, aśoka, sahakāra, and gular trees bearing fruit.
प्रियालनीपबकुलबन्धूकाक्षतमालकैः
With priyāla, nīpa, bakula, bandhūka, and fully ripened āmalaka trees.
बिल्वार्जुनकरञ्जाम्रबीजपूराङ्घ्रिपैरपि
With bilva, arjuna, karañja, mango, bījapūra, and āṅghripa trees as well.
पुत्रजीवाभयारिष्टलोहोदुंबरपिप्पलैः
With putrajīva, abhaya, ariṣṭa, lohoduṃbara, and pippala trees.
निरन्तरतरुच्छायासुदूरविनिवारितैः
Where the dense shade of trees kept the sun's rays at a great distance.
नानापक्वफलास्वादबलपुष्टैः प्लवेगमैः
With many kinds of ripe, delicious fruits, nourishing and abundant.
तत्र तत्रातिरम्यैश्च शिलाकुहरनिर्गतैः
Here and there, with most delightful streams emerging from rocky caves.
सारोवरैश्च विपुलैः कुमुदोत्पलमण्डितैः
And with broad lakes adorned with clusters of lotuses and water-lilies.
समासाद्यथ शैलेन्द्रं तुषारशिशिरं गिरिम्
Thus they approached the lord of mountains, a peak chilled by snow.
तस्य प्रविश्य गहनं वनं रामो महामनाः
Entering that dense forest, Rāma of great resolve proceeded.
स तत्र विचरन्दिक्षु हरिणीभिः समन्ततः
There, as he wandered in all directions, he was surrounded by herds of deer.
स तत्र कुसुमामोदगन्धिभिर्वनवायुभिः
There, the forest breezes were fragrant with the scent of blossoming flowers.
विविधाश्च स्थरीः सूक्ष्ममुपरिक्रम्य भार्गवः
And Bhārgava traversed various gentle slopes, both large and small.
अहो ऽयं सर्वशैलानामाधिपत्ये ऽभिषेचितः
Ah, this mountain has been consecrated as the sovereign of all mountains!
अस्य शैलाधिराजत्वं सुव्यक्तमभिलक्ष्यते
Its lordship over the mountains is clearly evident.
