काण्डपृष्ठो ऽथ कुण्डाशी मधुपः सोमविक्रयी
One who carries bundles, one who eats from a pit, a honey-gatherer, a seller of soma,
पित्रा विवदमानश्च यस्य चोपपतिर्गृहे
One who quarrels with his father, and one whose wife has another man in the house,
स्तवकः सूपकारश्च यश्च मित्राणि निन्दति
One who is a flatterer, a cook, and who speaks ill of friends,
उन्मत्तो ऽप्यथ षण्ढश्च भ्रूणहा गुरुतल्पगः
Even if insane, or a eunuch, a killer of a fetus, or one who violates the teacher’s bed,
विक्रीणाति च यो ब्रह्मव्रतानि नियमांस्तथा
And whoever sells vows of Brahmacharya or disciplines,
यच्चवाणिजके दत्तं नेह नामुत्र संभवेत्
Whatever is given to a merchant does not yield fruit here or hereafter.
तथा पाणविके वै च कारुके धर्मवर्जिते
Likewise, to a gambler, or to an artisan devoid of righteousness,
अन्यत्रास्य समाधानं न वणिकूछ्राद्धमर्हति
Elsewhere is its resolution; a merchant does not deserve the śrāddha offering.
षष्टिं काणः शतं षण्ढः श्वित्री पञ्चशतान्यपि
A one-eyed man for sixty, a eunuch for a hundred, a leper even for five hundred,
भ्रश्येद्धि स फलात्तस्मात्प्रदाता यस्तु बालिशः
He surely falls from the result; therefore, the giver who is ignorant,
सोपानत्कश्च यद्भुङ्क्ते यच्च दत्तमसत्कृतम्
Who eats with sandals on, or what is given without respect,
श्वा चैव ब्रह्महा चैव नावेक्षेत कथञ्चन
A dog and a brahmin-killer—one should never look upon them in any way.
राक्षसानां तिलाः प्रोक्ताः शुनां परिवृतास्तथा
Sesame seeds are said to belong to the demons, and those encircled by dogs likewise.
रजस्वलायाः स्पर्शेन क्रुद्धोयश्च प्रयच्छति
By the touch of a menstruating woman, or when given in anger,
विविक्तेषु च प्रीयन्ते दत्तेनेह पितामहाः
The ancestors are pleased by offerings made in solitude.
तस्मात्परिवृतेनेह विधिवद्दर्भपाणिना
Therefore, with encircled (sesame), here, according to rule, with darbha grass in hand,
अनुमान्य द्विजान्पूर्वमर्गौं कुर्याद्यथाविधि
Having first obtained the consent of the twice-born, one should perform the offering according to the prescribed method.
शुक्लपक्षे च पूर्वाङ्णे श्राद्धं कुर्याद्यथाविधि
And in the bright fortnight, in the earlier part, one should perform śrāddha as prescribed.
एवमेते महात्मानो महायोगा महौजसः
Thus, these great souls, great yogis, of great energy,
पितृभक्त्यैव तु नरो योगं प्राप्नोति दुर्ल्लभम्
A man attains the rare yoga solely through devotion to the ancestors.
यज्ञहेतोस्तदुद्धृत्य मोहयित्वा जगत्तथा
Having taken it up for the sake of sacrifice, he thus deluded the world.
अमृतं गुह्यमुद्धृत्य योगे योगविदां वराः
Having drawn forth the secret nectar, the best among those skilled in yoga—
देवानां परमं गुह्यमृषीणां च परायणम्
The supreme secret of the gods and the ultimate goal of the seers—
पितृभक्तः समासेन पितृपूर्वपरश्च यः
He who is devoted to the ancestors, in brief, and who honors both former and later ancestors—
अयत्नात्प्राप्नुयादेव सर्वमेतन्न संशयः
He attains all this effortlessly, without doubt.
येषु चाप्यक्षयं श्राद्धं तीर्थेषु च गुहासु च
In those places where the śrāddha is inexhaustible, in sacred fords and in caves—
श्रुत्वेमं श्राद्धकल्पं च न कुर्याद्यस्तु मानवः
If a man, having heard this rite of śrāddha, does not perform it—
परिवादो न कर्त्तव्यो योगिनां तु विशेषतः
One should not speak ill, especially of yogis.
योगान्परिवदेद्यस्तु ध्यानिनो मोक्षकाङ्क्षिणः
But he who reviles yogis—those intent on meditation and seeking liberation—
योगीश्वरपरीवादान्न स्वर्गं याति मानवः
A man who slanders the lords of yoga does not attain heaven.
