धेनुं श्राद्धे तु यो दद्याद्गृष्टिं कुम्भापदोहनीम्
Whoever gives a cow at the śrāddha, yielding rich, pot-filling milk—
दद्याद्यः शिशिरे चाग्निं बहुकाष्ठं प्रयत्नतः
Whoever gives fire in winter, with much wood, with care—
इन्धनानि तु यो दद्या द्द्विजेभ्यः शिशिरागमे
Whoever gives fuel to the twice-born at the onset of winter—
सुरभीणि च माल्यानि गन्धवन्ति तथैव च
And also fragrant garlands, and those possessing scent—
गन्धमाल्यं महात्मानं सुखानि विविधानि च
Fragrant garlands, offerings to the great-souled, and various kinds of pleasures,
शयनासनयानानि भूमयो वाहनानि च
Beds, seats, vehicles, lands, and means of conveyance,
श्राद्धकाले गुणवति विप्रे वै समुपस्थिते
When, at the time of the śrāddha, a virtuous brāhmaṇa is present,
सर्पिःपूर्णानि पात्राणि श्राद्धे सत्कृत्य दापयेत्
One should respectfully give vessels filled with ghee at the śrāddha.
श्राद्धे यथेप्सितं दत्त्वा पुण्डरीकफलं लभेत्
By giving as desired at the śrāddha, one attains the fruit of the lotus.
कूपारामतडागानि क्षेत्रगोष्ठगृहाणि च
Wells, gardens, ponds, fields, cowsheds, and houses,
स्वास्तीर्णं शयनं दत्त्वा श्राद्धेरत्नविभूषितम्
By giving a well-spread bed adorned with jewels at the śrāddha,
अस्मिंल्लोके च संपन्नं स्यन्दनं च सुवाहनैः
In this world, one obtains prosperity and a chariot with excellent horses.
पर्णकौशेयपट्टोर्णे तथा प्रावारकंबलौ
Leaf, silk, fine cloth, as well as blankets and woolen covers,
दद्यादेतानि विप्राणां भोजयित्वा यथाविधि
One should give these to the brāhmaṇas after feeding them according to the proper rule.
बहुभार्याः सुरूपाश्च पुत्रा भृत्याश्च किङ्कराः
Many wives, beautiful sons, and servants who are attendants,
कौशेयं क्षौमकार्पासं दुकूलं गहनं तथा
Silk, linen, cotton, fine cloth, and also thick garments,
अलक्ष्मीं नाशयन्त्येते तमः सूर्योदयो यथा
These drive away misfortune, just as sunrise dispels darkness.
वासो हि सर्वदैवत्ये सर्वदेवैरभिष्टुतम्
Clothing is praised by all the gods as being supremely divine.
तस्माद्वस्त्राणि देयानि श्राद्धकाले तु नित्यशः
Therefore, garments should always be given at the time of śrāddha.
नित्यश्राद्धे तु यो दद्यात्प्रयतस्तत्परायणः
Whoever, with effort and devotion, gives at the daily śrāddha,
सर्वकामसमृद्धस्य यज्ञस्य फलमश्नुते
Enjoys the fruit of a sacrifice that fulfills all desires and is abundant in every way.
कृसर मधुसर्पिश्च पयः पायसमेव च
Kṛsara, honey, ghee, milk, and also rice pudding—
दधिगव्यमसंसृष्टं भक्ष्यान्नानाविधांस्तथा
Curds, clarified butter, and cooked pulses mixed together, as well as various kinds of food and eatables.
घृतेन भोजयेद्विप्रान्घृतं भूमौ समुत्सृजोत्
He should feed the Brahmins with ghee, and pour ghee upon the ground.
ओदनं पायसं सर्पिर्मधुमूलफलानि च
Rice, sweet milk porridge, clarified butter, honey, roots, and fruits as well.
शर्कराक्षीरसंयुक्ताः पृथुका नित्यमक्षयाः
Flattened rice always inexhaustible, mixed with sugar and milk.
सक्तुलाजास्तथापूपाः कुल्माषा व्यञ्जनैः सह
Roasted grains, cakes, and pulse preparations, together with condiments.
श्राद्धेष्वेतानि यो दद्यात्पद्मं स लभते निधिम्
Whoever gives these at śrāddha rites attains a treasure as great as a lotus.
सर्वभोगानवाप्नोति पूज्यते च दिवं गतः
He obtains all enjoyments and, having gone to heaven, is honored there.
भोजनाग्रासनं दत्त्वा अतिथिभ्यः कृताञ्जलिः
Having given the best food and a seat to guests, with joined palms,
