भृतको ऽध्यापयेद्यस्तु भृतकाध्यापितस्तु यः
He who teaches for wages, and he who is taught for wages.
क्रयश्च विक्रयश्चैवाजीवितार्थे विगर्हितौ
Buying and selling for the sake of livelihood are both condemned.
आहरेद्भृतितो वेदान् वेदेभ्यश्चोपजीवति
One who collects wages for teaching the Vedas, or who lives off the Vedas.
वृथा दारांश्च यो गच्छेद्यो यजेत वृथाध्वरैः
One who approaches women unlawfully, or who performs sacrifices without proper cause.
स्त्रियो रक्तान्तरा येषां परदारपराश्च ये
Those whose women are stained, and those who pursue others' wives.
वर्णाश्रमाणां धर्मेषु विरुद्धाःसर्वकर्मणि
Those who oppose the duties of caste and stage of life in all actions.
यश्च सूकरवद्भुङ्क्ते यश्च पाणितले द्विजः
He who eats like a pig, and the twice-born who eats from his palm.
स्त्रीशूद्रायान्नमेतद्वै श्राद्धोच्छिष्टं न दापयेत्
One should not give food left over from a Śrāddha to women or Shudras.
तस्मान्न देयमन्नाद्यमुच्छिष्टं श्राद्धकर्मणि
Therefore, food and drink that are leftovers should not be given in the śrāddha ritual.
अवशेषं तु दातव्यमन्नाद्यं तु विशेषतः
But what remains should indeed be given, especially food and drink.
यावन्न श्रपितं चान्नं यावतौष्ण्यं न मुञ्चति
As long as the food has not been offered and has not lost its warmth,
दत्तं प्रतिग्रहो होमो भोजनं बलिरेव च
Giving, receiving, oblation, eating, and offering to spirits—
एतान्येव च सर्वाणि दानानि च विशेषतः
All these, and especially all acts of giving,
मुण्डाञ्जटिलकाषायाञ्श्राद्धकर्मणि वर्जयेत्
One should avoid those with shaven heads, matted hair, or ochre robes in the śrāddha ritual.
देवभक्ता महात्मानः पुनीयुर्दर्शनादपि
Even the sight of great souls devoted to the gods purifies.
सर्वं योगेश्वरैर्व्याप्तं त्रैलोक्यं हि निरन्तरम्
The three worlds are pervaded everywhere by the lords of yoga.
व्यक्ताव्यक्तं वशे कृत्वा सर्वस्यापि च यत्परम्
Having brought both the manifest and unmanifest under control, and that which is supreme over all,
सर्वज्ञानानि सृष्टानि मोक्षादीनिमहात्मभिः
All knowledges, including liberation and others, have been created by the great souls.
तस्मात्तेषां सदा भक्तः फलं प्राप्नोति वोत्तमम्
Therefore, one who is always devoted to them attains the highest fruit.
सामानि यो वेद स वेद ब्रह्म यो मानसं वेद स वेद सर्वम्
He who knows the Sāman hymns knows Brahman; he who knows the mind knows all.
इति श्री ब्रह्माण्डे महापुराणे वायुप्रोक्ते मध्यभागे तृतीय उपोद्धातपादे श्राद्धकल्पे ब्राह्मणपरीक्षा नाम पञ्चदशो ऽध्यायः
Thus ends the fifteenth chapter named 'Examination of Brāhmaṇas' in the section on śrāddha rites, in the third division of the middle part of the glorious Brahmāṇḍa Mahāpurāṇa, as spoken by Vāyu.
तारणं सर्वभूतानां स्वर्गमार्गसुखावहम्
It is the means of crossing over for all beings, bringing happiness on the path to heaven.
सर्वं पितॄणां दातव्यं तेषामेवाज्ञयार्थिना
Everything should be given to the ancestors, by one who seeks their command.
दिव्याप्सरोभिः संपूर्णमन्नदो लभते ऽक्षयम्
The giver of food, filled with divine nymphs, obtains inexhaustibility.
आयुः प्राकाश्यमैश्वर्यं रूपं च लभते शुभम्
He attains auspicious life, brilliance, lordship, and beauty.
पावनं सर्व विप्राणां ब्रह्मदानस्य तत्फलम्
The fruit of giving Brahman is the purification of all brāhmaṇas.
मधुक्षीराज्यदधिभिर्दातारमुपतिष्ठते
He who offers with honey, milk, ghee, and curd is attended by the giver.
धेनुं सलभते दिव्यां पयोदां सुखदो हिनीम्
He obtains a divine cow, yielding milk, bestowing happiness, and gentle.
शोभनं लभते यानं पादयोः सुखमेधते
He attains a splendid vehicle and enjoys comfort at his feet.
प्राप्नुयात्सर्वपुष्पाणि सुगन्धीनि मृदूनि च
He obtains all flowers, fragrant and soft.
