चतुर्दशानां विद्यानामेकस्यामपि पारगाः
Those who have mastered even one of the fourteen branches of knowledge—
असंदेहस्तु सौपर्णाः पञ्चाग्नेयाश्च सामगाः
Undoubtedly, the Sauparṇas, the five Agni-ritualists, and the Sāma-chanters—
त्रिनाचिकेतस्त्रै विद्यो यश्च धर्मान्द्विजः पठेत्
He who knows the triple Nāciketa, the threefold Veda, and the twice-born who recites the dharmas—
सर्वे ते पावना विप्राः पङ्क्तीनां समुदात्दृताः
All these Brāhmaṇas are purifiers, chosen for the rows.
पितरस्तस्य तन्मासं तस्मिन्रितसि शेरते
The ancestors of such a person rest for that month in that season.
यतिं वा वालखिल्यं वा भोजयेच्छ्राद्दकर्मणि
One should feed either an ascetic or a Vālakhilya at the śrāddha rite.
गृहस्थं भोजयेद्यस्तु विश्वेदेवास्तु पूजिताः
But if one feeds a householder, then the Viśvedevās are worshipped.
यतीनां तु कृता पूजा साक्षाद्ब्रह्मा तुं पूजितः
When ascetics are worshipped, Brahmā himself is directly worshipped.
चत्वारस्त्वाश्रमाः पूच्याः श्राद्धे देवे तथैव च
All four āśramas are to be honored at the śrāddha, and likewise the gods.
यस्तिष्ठेद्वायुभक्षश्च चातुराश्रमबाह्यतः
And one who lives on air, outside the four āśramas—
अयतिर्मोक्षवादी च श्रुतौ तौ पङ्क्तिदूषकौ
One who is undisciplined or who speaks of liberation, both are corruptors of the dining line according to scripture.
निन्दन्ति च द्विजातिभ्यः सर्वे ते पङ्क्तिदूषकाः
All those who insult the twice-born are corruptors of the dining line.
ध्यानं निन्दन्ति ये केचित्सर्वे ते पङ्क्तिदूषकाः
Whoever disparages meditation, all such people are corruptors of the dining line.
निर्घृणान्भिन्नवृत्तांश्च सर्वभक्षांश्च वर्जयेत्
One should avoid those who are cruel, who have deviant conduct, and who eat all kinds of food.
गाय नान्वेदवृत्तांश्च हव्यकव्ये न भोजयेत्
One should not offer food in oblations to those who do not follow Vedic conduct or who sing.
यो ऽश्नाति सह शूद्रेणा सर्वे ते पङ्क्तिदूषणाः
All those who eat together with a Shudra are corruptors of the dining line.
शुश्रूषणं चाप्यगुरोररेर्वाप्यकार्यमेतद्धि सदा द्विजानाम्
Serving an unworthy or hostile teacher is always improper for the twice-born.
मिथ्याप्रवादी निन्दाकृत्तथा सूचकदांभिकौ
One who speaks falsely, who insults, and who is a tale-bearer or hypocrite.
वेदे नियोगदातारो लोभमोहफलर्थिनः
Those who assign Vedic duties for the sake of greed, delusion, or material gain.
न वियोगास्तु वेदानां यो नियुङ्क्ते स पापकृत्
There should be no separation from the Vedas; whoever assigns them is a doer of evil.
भृतको ऽध्यापयेद्यस्तु भृतकाध्यापितस्तु यः
He who teaches for wages, and he who is taught for wages.
क्रयश्च विक्रयश्चैवाजीवितार्थे विगर्हितौ
Buying and selling for the sake of livelihood are both condemned.
आहरेद्भृतितो वेदान् वेदेभ्यश्चोपजीवति
One who collects wages for teaching the Vedas, or who lives off the Vedas.
वृथा दारांश्च यो गच्छेद्यो यजेत वृथाध्वरैः
One who approaches women unlawfully, or who performs sacrifices without proper cause.
स्त्रियो रक्तान्तरा येषां परदारपराश्च ये
Those whose women are stained, and those who pursue others' wives.
वर्णाश्रमाणां धर्मेषु विरुद्धाःसर्वकर्मणि
Those who oppose the duties of caste and stage of life in all actions.
यश्च सूकरवद्भुङ्क्ते यश्च पाणितले द्विजः
He who eats like a pig, and the twice-born who eats from his palm.
स्त्रीशूद्रायान्नमेतद्वै श्राद्धोच्छिष्टं न दापयेत्
One should not give food left over from a Śrāddha to women or Shudras.
तस्मान्न देयमन्नाद्यमुच्छिष्टं श्राद्धकर्मणि
Therefore, food and drink that are leftovers should not be given in the śrāddha ritual.
अवशेषं तु दातव्यमन्नाद्यं तु विशेषतः
But what remains should indeed be given, especially food and drink.
