फलपुष्पपलाशानां प्लावनं चाद्भिरिष्यते
Washing fruits, flowers, and leaves with water is prescribed.
निषेको गोक्रमो दाहः खननं शुद्धिरिष्यते
For seminal discharge, contact with a cow, burning, and digging, purification is prescribed.
पुंसां चतुष्पदां चव मृद्भिः शौचं विधीयते
For men and for quadrupeds, cleanliness is to be performed with earth.
अनिर्दिष्टमतो यद्यत्तन्मे निगदतः शृणु
Now, if anything remains unspecified, listen as I declare it to you.
कुर्यात्पुरीषं हि शिरो ऽवगुण्ठ्य न वै स्पृशेज्जातु शिरः करेण
One should cover the head when defecating and never touch the head with the hand.
सुसंवृत्ते प्रदेशे च णन्तर्धाय वसुंधराम्
In a well-concealed place, having hidden oneself from view, on the earth.
दिवा उदङ्मुखः कुर्याद्रात्रौ वै दक्षिणामुखः
By day, one should face north; at night, indeed, one should face south.
शौचं वामेन हस्तेन गुदे तिस्रस्तु मृत्तिकाः
For cleansing, with the left hand at the anus, three lumps of earth are to be used.
उभाभ्यां वा पुनर्दद्याद्द्वाभ्यां सप्त तु मृत्तिकाः
Or, using both hands, one may use two or seven lumps of earth.
आपस्त्वाद्यास्त्रयश्चैव सुर्याग्न्यनिलदेवताः
Water, the first three (lumps), and the deities of the sun, fire, and wind.
ःंसवार्यवनैरेव यथावत्पादधावनम्
Washing the feet properly with water from a pond, river, or forest, as is appropriate.
उपवासस्त्रिरात्रं तु दुष्टमुक्ते ह्युदात्दृतः
A three-night fast is prescribed for one who is released from a polluted mouth.
स्पृष्ट्वा श्वानं श्वपाकं च तप्तकृच्छ्रं समाचरेत्
Having touched a dog or an outcaste, one should perform the penance of heated austerity.
त्रिरात्रमुक्तं सस्नेहान्येकरात्रमतो ऽन्यथा
If released after three nights, with unctuous substances; otherwise, after one night.
पीत्वा चापोभूतिलपा गत्वा चापि युगं धरम्
Having drunk water, eaten earth, or traversed a yoke of land.
पापदेशाश्च ये केचित्पापैरध्युषिता जनैः
Whatever places are sinful, inhabited by people engaged in sin.
गच्छतां रागसंमोहात्तेषां पापं न गच्छति
For those who go there out of passion or delusion, their sin does not follow them.
आरुह्य भृगुतुङ्गं तु गत्वा पुण्यां सरस्वतीम्
Having ascended the lofty mountain of Bhrigu and gone to the sacred Sarasvati.
हिमवत्प्रभवा नद्यो याश्चान्या ऋषिपूचिताः
The rivers originating from the Himalayas, and others revered by sages,
गत्वैतान्मुच्यते पापैः स्वर्गे चात्यन्तमश्नुते
By visiting these, one is freed from sins and attains supreme enjoyment in heaven.
ब्रह्मणस्य द्वादशाहं क्षत्रियस्य विधीयते
A twelve-day period is prescribed for a Brahmin, and for a Kshatriya likewise.
उदक्या सर्ववर्णानां चतूरात्रेण शुध्यति
For all castes, purification is achieved by four nights with water.
नग्नादीन्मृतहारांश्च स्पृष्ट्वा शौचं विधीयते
After touching the naked, the dead, or those who carry the dead, purification is prescribed.
एतदेव भवेच्छौचं मैथुने वमने तथा
This same purification applies in cases of sexual union and vomiting.
प्रक्षाल्य चाद्भिः स्नात्वा तु हस्तौ चैव पुनर्मृदा
After washing with water and bathing, one should again cleanse the hands with earth.
एवं शौचविधिर्दृष्टः सर्वकृत्येषु नित्यदा
Thus, the rule of purification is observed always in all actions.
अरण्ये शौचमेतत्तु ग्राम्यं वक्ष्याम्यतः परम्
This is the rule of purification in the forest; now I shall speak of the village.
अतिरिक्तमृदं दद्यान्मृदन्ते त्वद्भिरेव च
One should provide extra earth, and at the end, use only water.
कण्ठं शिरो वा आवृत्य रथ्यापणगतो ऽपि वा
Covering the throat or head, even when going to the street or market,
पक्षाल्य पात्रं निक्षिप्य आचम्याभ्युक्षणं ततः
After washing the vessel and setting it down, one should sip water and then sprinkle.
