Where the bull perishes, and where the bull stands unsupported—
In that place, the bull is the Veda and the āśrama; whoever does not see this rightly—
Long ago, in the battle between gods and asuras, when the asuras were defeated—
The aged Śrāvakas, the Nirgranthas, the Śākyas, the Jīvakas, and the Kāṛpaṭas—
A matted-haired ascetic in vain, a shaven-headed one in vain, a naked twice-born in vain—
Those who perpetually transgress family duties, who make a livelihood through their wives, are in vain.
Indeed, when śrāddha is offered in the presence of such as these, it is seen to go to the Dānavas.
A bandit and a cruel man—one should dismiss them from the śrāddha ceremony.
Those who speak in disputes about the gods and the seers—
It is seen that, through these, the offerings go to the Asuras and Yātudhānas.
They say the Vaiśya is the Dvāpara age, and the Śūdra is known as the Kali age.
In the Dvāpara age, wars are constant; in the Kali age, heresies abound.
Even the mere sight of a dog completely destroys the efficacy of śrāddha offerings.
One must never allow fallen or impure persons to witness the rite under any circumstances.
Such persons should be excluded from the offerings, for their presence brings misfortune to the ritual.
The prescribed procedure is to sprinkle the offerings with pure water that has been properly consecrated.
One must diligently avoid being seen by a teacher, the sun, fire, or women in their menses during the rite.
Any food that has been seen by impure animals, or that is dry or stale, is to be rejected.
Food that has come into contact with gravel, insects, stones, or hair must also be discarded.
Prepared foods that have been directly salted are likewise unsuitable for the rite.
Foods that have been touched by clothing are to be avoided in śrāddha ceremonies.
Such unfit offerings are not considered sacrifices; they perish just as dust is scattered.
Rock salt, common salt, and salt obtained from mines are all to be considered.
One should carefully place these into the fire or into one's hands before use.
Sprinkling and purification of substances must be performed, and so too their proper separation.
This applies to stones, roots, fruits, sugarcane, ropes, and even leather.
Likewise, the cleansing of teeth, bones, wood, and horns is prescribed.
The same rule applies to all kinds of jewels, pearls, corals, and aquatic objects.
Purification is required for all types of unripe fruits and for all sheep.
At both the beginning and end of purification, washing with water is prescribed.
