कालेयं कालशाकं च भूरिपूर्णा सुवर्चला
Kāleya, kālaśāka, bhūripūrṇā, and suvarcalā are named.
कफालकं कणा द्राक्षा लकुचं चोचमेव च
Kaphālaka, kaṇā, grapes, lakuca, and cucama are also mentioned.
वैकङ्कतं नालिकेरशृङ्गज पकरूषकम्
Vaikaṅkata, coconut, śṛṅgaja, and pakarūṣaka are included.
सुगन्धमांसपीवन्ति कषायाः सर्व एव च
All astringent substances that have a strong smell of meat are also included.
नागरं चात्र वै देयं दीर्घमूलकमव च
Ginger and long radish should not be given here.
वर्जनीयानि वक्ष्यामि श्राद्धकर्मणि नित्यशः
I will now declare those things that must always be avoided in the śrāddha ritual.
करंभाद्यानि चान्यानि हीनानि रसगन्धतः
Preparations like karaṃbha and others that lack proper taste and fragrance are also to be avoided.
पुरा देवासुरे युद्धे निर्जितस्य बलेः सुरैः
Once, in the battle between gods and asuras, when Bali was defeated by the gods—
तत एतानि जातानि लशुनादीनि सर्वशः
From that time, all these, including garlic and similar things, came into being.
श्रद्धकर्मणि वर्ज्यानि याश्च नार्यो रजस्वलाः
In the śrāddha ritual, these are to be avoided, as well as women who are menstruating.
लभेद्यत्र न गौस्तृप्तिं नक्तं यच्चैव गुह्यते
Where the cow does not obtain satisfaction, and what is concealed at night, should also be avoided.
माहिषं चामरं चैव पयो वर्ज्यं विजानता
A wise person should avoid buffalo, chamara, and milk.
न द्रष्टव्यं च यैः श्राद्धं शौचाशौचं च कृत्स्नशः
The śrāddha should not be seen by those who are either pure or impure in all respects.
राजनिष्ठामवाप्नोति स्वर्गमक्षयमेव च
One attains royal status and even imperishable heaven.
पूतिगन्धां तथा भूमिं वर्जयेच्छ्राद्धकर्मणि
One should avoid ground with a foul smell for the performance of śrāddha rites.
त्रिशङ्कोर्वर्जयेद्देशं सर्वं द्वादश योजनम्
One should avoid entirely the region of Triśaṅku, extending twelve yojanas, for śrāddha.
देशास्त्रिशङ्कवो नाम वर्ज्या वै श्राद्धकर्मणि
Regions known as Triśaṅku are indeed to be avoided for the śrāddha ritual.
प्रनष्टाश्रमधर्माश्च वर्ज्या देशाः प्रयत्नतः
Regions where the duties of the āśramas have been lost should be carefully avoided.
गच्छन्त्येतैस्तु दृष्टानि न पितॄंश्च पितामहांन
In such places, the offerings made do not reach the ancestors or the grandfathers.
सर्वेषामेव भूतानां त्रयीसंवरणं स्मृतम्
For all beings, the threefold Vedic restraint is declared.
प्रलीयते वृषो यस्मिन्निरालंबश्च यो बृषे
Where the bull perishes, and where the bull stands unsupported—
वृषो वेदाश्रमस्तस्मिन्यो वै सम्यङ्न पश्यति
In that place, the bull is the Veda and the āśrama; whoever does not see this rightly—
पुरा देवासुरे युद्धे निर्जितैरसुरैस्तथा
Long ago, in the battle between gods and asuras, when the asuras were defeated—
वृद्धश्रावकिनिर्ग्रन्थाः शाक्या जीवककार्पटाः
The aged Śrāvakas, the Nirgranthas, the Śākyas, the Jīvakas, and the Kāṛpaṭas—
वृथा जटी वृथा मुण्डी वृथा नग्नश्च यो द्विजः
A matted-haired ascetic in vain, a shaven-headed one in vain, a naked twice-born in vain—
कुलधर्मातिगाः शश्वद्वृथा वृत्तिकलत्रकाः
Those who perpetually transgress family duties, who make a livelihood through their wives, are in vain.
एतैर्हि दत्तं दृष्टं वै श्राद्धं गच्छति दानवान्
Indeed, when śrāddha is offered in the presence of such as these, it is seen to go to the Dānavas.
दस्युश्चैव नृशंसश्च दर्णने तान्विसर्जयेत्
A bandit and a cruel man—one should dismiss them from the śrāddha ceremony.
देवतानामृषीणां च विवादे प्रवदन्ति ये
Those who speak in disputes about the gods and the seers—
असुरान्यातुधानांश्च दृष्टमेभिर्व्रजत्युत
It is seen that, through these, the offerings go to the Asuras and Yātudhānas.
