अना हारो क्षयं याति विद्यादनशनं तपः
When abstinence is practiced, decay ceases; know that fasting is austerity.
क्षीणेषु सर्वदोषेषु क्षीणेष्वेवेन्द्रियेषु च
When all faults are diminished, and likewise the senses are weakened,
कारणेभ्यो गुणेभ्यश्च व्यक्ताव्यक्ताच्च कुत्स्नशः
From causes and qualities, from manifest and unmanifest, completely,
न सन्नासन्न सदसन्नैव किञ्चिदवस्थितः
Nothing remains established as existent, non-existent, or both existent and non-existent.
इति श्रीब्रह्माण्डे महापुराणे वायुप्रोक्ते मध्यभागे तृतीय उपोद्धातपादे श्राद्धकल्पे पुण्यदेशानुकीर्त्तनं नाम त्रयोदशो ऽध्यायः
Thus, in the glorious Brahmanda Mahapurana, spoken by Vayu, in the middle section, in the third part of the introduction, in the rites of Śrāddha, the thirteenth chapter named 'Enumeration of Sacred Places' (Puṇyadeśānukīrtana) ends.
श्राद्धकर्मणि मेध्यानि वर्जनीयानि यानि च
In the rites of Śrāddha, those things which are pure and those which are to be avoided,
अग्निहोत्रमुपायुष्यं पवित्रं परमं हितम्
The Agnihotra is to be performed; it is pure and supremely beneficial.
सर्वस्वेनापि कर्त्तव्यङ्क्षिप्रं वै राहुदर्शने
Even with all one's possessions, it must be performed quickly at the sight of Rāhu.
कुर्वाणस्तत्तरेत्पापं सती नौरिव सागरे
One who performs it crosses over sin, just as a boat crosses the ocean.
विषाणवर्जं खड्गस्य मात्सर्यान्नाशयामहे
Except for the horn, we destroy the envy of the sword.
पिबञ्छचीपतिः सोमं पृथिव्यां मध्यगः पुरा
The lord of the six, Soma, once drank on earth, dwelling in the middle.
विप्रुषस्तस्य नासाभ्यामासक्ताभ्यां तथेक्षवः
The drops from his two attached nostrils, and likewise the grains,
श्यामाकैरिक्षुभिश्चैव पितॄणां सर्वकामिकम्
With black millet and sugarcane, all desires of the ancestors are fulfilled.
श्यामाकास्तु द्विनामानो विहिता यजनेस्मृते
Black millet, having two names, is prescribed for sacrifice according to tradition.
प्रसातिकाः प्रियङ्गुश्च मुद्गाश्च हरितास्तथा
Prasātikā, priyaṅgu, and mung beans, as well as green ones,
कृष्णमाषास्तिलाश्चैव श्रेष्ठास्तु यवशालयः
Black gram and sesame, and the best are barley and rice.
कृष्णाश्चैवान्नलोहाश्च गर्ह्याः स्युः श्राद्धकर्मणि
Black grains and red rice are to be avoided in the śrāddha ritual.
मसूराश्चैव पुण्याश्च कुसुंभं श्रीनिकेतनम्
Masūra lentils, as well as the auspicious kusumbha, the abode of prosperity, are mentioned.
बिल्वामलकमृद्वीकापनसाम्रातदाडिमाः
Bilva fruit, amalaki, dried grapes, jackfruit, mango, and pomegranate are included.
खशेरुकोविदार्यश्च तालकन्दं तथा विसम्
Khaseru, kodrava, and vidāri, as well as tal root and poison, are also listed.
कालेयं कालशाकं च भूरिपूर्णा सुवर्चला
Kāleya, kālaśāka, bhūripūrṇā, and suvarcalā are named.
कफालकं कणा द्राक्षा लकुचं चोचमेव च
Kaphālaka, kaṇā, grapes, lakuca, and cucama are also mentioned.
वैकङ्कतं नालिकेरशृङ्गज पकरूषकम्
Vaikaṅkata, coconut, śṛṅgaja, and pakarūṣaka are included.
सुगन्धमांसपीवन्ति कषायाः सर्व एव च
All astringent substances that have a strong smell of meat are also included.
नागरं चात्र वै देयं दीर्घमूलकमव च
Ginger and long radish should not be given here.
वर्जनीयानि वक्ष्यामि श्राद्धकर्मणि नित्यशः
I will now declare those things that must always be avoided in the śrāddha ritual.
करंभाद्यानि चान्यानि हीनानि रसगन्धतः
Preparations like karaṃbha and others that lack proper taste and fragrance are also to be avoided.
पुरा देवासुरे युद्धे निर्जितस्य बलेः सुरैः
Once, in the battle between gods and asuras, when Bali was defeated by the gods—
तत एतानि जातानि लशुनादीनि सर्वशः
From that time, all these, including garlic and similar things, came into being.
श्रद्धकर्मणि वर्ज्यानि याश्च नार्यो रजस्वलाः
In the śrāddha ritual, these are to be avoided, as well as women who are menstruating.
