दद्याच्छ्राद्धं तु यस्तस्मिंस्तस्य वक्ष्यामि यत्फलम्
I shall declare the fruit for one who performs a śrāddha there.
अस्मिंल्लोके वशी च स्यात्प्रेत्य स्वर्गे मही यते
In this world, he becomes powerful, and after death, he attains heaven and the earth.
तत्र व्याससरः पुण्यं दिव्यो ब्रह्मह्रदस्तथा
There is the sacred lake of Vyāsa, and likewise the divine Brahma-hrada.
अत्रैव चाश्रमः पुण्यो वसिष्ठस्य महात्मनः
There also is the holy hermitage of the great-souled Vasiṣṭha.
आख्यान पञ्चमा वेदाः सृष्टा ह्येते स्वयंभुवा
There, the fifth Veda, the Itihāsa and Purāṇas, were composed by the self-born one.
श्राद्धं चानन्त्यमेतेषु जपहोमतपांसि च
In those places, śrāddha, recitation, oblations, and austerities are inexhaustible.
ब्रह्मतीर्थे महाप्राज्ञ सर्वयज्ञसमं फलम्
O wise one, at the Brahma-tīrtha, the fruit is equal to all sacrifices.
विरजायां तथा पुण्यं मद्रवायां च पर्वते
Likewise, there is merit at Virajā and on the mountain Madravā.
महाकूटे ह्यनन्ते च गिरौ त्रिककुदे तथा
On Mahākūṭa, on Ananta, and also on the mountain Trikakuda.
अश्रद्दधानं नाभ्येति सा चाभ्येति धृतव्रतम्
The faithless do not approach, but one who is firm in vows does approach.
तस्मिन्देयं सदा श्राद्धं पितॄणामक्षयार्थिनाम्
Therefore, śrāddha should always be offered there for ancestors desiring inexhaustible merit.
स्वर्गमार्गप्रदं नाम तीर्थं सद्यो वरप्रदम्
That holy place, known as the giver of the path to heaven, instantly bestows boons.
अद्यापि तानि दृश्यन्ते चीराण्यंभोगतानि तु
Even today, those garments and vessels used for enjoyment are seen there.
ख्यातमायतनं तत्र नन्दिनः सिद्धसेवितम्
There, the famous abode of Nandi, attended by the perfected beings, is known.
दृश्यन्ते काञ्चना युपास्त्वर्चिषो भास्करोदये
Golden sacrificial posts are seen there, shining at sunrise.
सर्वतश्च कुरुक्षेत्रं सुतीर्थं तु विशेषतः
Everywhere Kurukṣetra is supremely holy, but especially its sacred bathing places.
कीर्त्यते च तिलान्दत्त्वा पितृभ्योवै सदाक्षयम्
It is also declared that offering sesame seeds to the ancestors is always inexhaustible.
श्राद्धं दत्तममावास्यां विधिना च यथाक्रमम्
A śrāddha performed on the new moon day, according to proper procedure and order,
अर्चयित्वा पितॄंस्तत्र स पुत्रस्त्वनृणो भवेत्
Having worshipped the ancestors there, the son becomes free from debt.
व्यासतीर्थे दृषद्वत्यां त्रिप्लक्षे च विशेषतः
Especially at Vyāsa-tīrtha on the river Dṛṣadvatī, and at Triplakṣa,
शक्रावतारे गङ्गायां मैनाके च नगोत्तमे
At the descent of Indra on the Gaṅgā, and on the great mountain Maināka,
अत्युष्णाश्चातिशीताश्च आपस्तस्मिन्निदर्शनम्
There, the waters are seen to be extremely hot and extremely cold.
तत्राक्षयं सदा श्राद्धं पितृभिः पूर्वकीर्त्तितम्
There, śrāddha is always inexhaustible, as previously declared by the ancestors.
तस्मिंस्तु श्राद्धमानन्त्यं जपहोमतपांसि च
There, śrāddha, recitation, oblations, and austerities are endless.
अद्यापि तत्र दृश्यन्ते पादपा मणिबर्हणाः
Even today, trees adorned with jewels are seen there.
यथा वै तोलितं विप्रैस्तीर्थानां फलमुत्तमम्
As the excellent fruit of the holy places has been weighed by the brāhmaṇas,
चतुर्थो ब्रह्मणस्त्वंशः पराशरकुलोद्भवः
You are the fourth portion of Brahmā, born in the lineage of Parāśara.
महायोगं महात्मानं या व्यासं जनयिष्यति
She will give birth to Vyāsa, the great yogin and great soul.
मत्स्ययोनौ पुनर्जाता नियोगात्कारणेन तु
Born again in the womb of Matsyā, by commission and for a reason,
दत्तं सकृदपि श्राद्धमक्षयं समुदाहृतम्
Even a single śrāddha performed there is said to be inexhaustible.
