उपोद्धातपादे श्राद्धकल्पे द्वादशो ऽध्यायः
The twelfth chapter in the section on the Śrāddha ritual in the introductory portion.
योगात्मानो महात्मानो विपाप्मानो महौजसः
Those who are yogic, great-souled, free from sin, and possessed of great energy,
येषु वाप्यनुगृह्णन्ति मोक्षप्राप्तिः क्रमेण तु
In whom liberation is gradually bestowed.
तीर्थानि चैव पुण्यानि देशांश्छैलांस्तथाश्रमान्
The holy places, the sacred regions, the mountains, and the hermitages,
पर्वतप्रवरः पुण्यः सिद्धयारणसेवितः
The foremost mountain, sacred and frequented by accomplished sages,
तपः सुदुश्चरं तेपे भगवानङ्गिराः पुरा
The venerable Angiras formerly performed exceedingly difficult austerity.
न भयं नैव चालक्ष्मीर्यावद्भूमिर्द्धरिष्यति
There will be neither fear nor misfortune as long as the earth endures.
शृङ्गे माल्यवतो नित्यं वह्निः संवर्त्तको यथा
On the peak of Mālyavat, the fire of dissolution always exists.
शान्ताःकुशा इति ख्याताः परिदक्षिणनर्मदाम्
They are known as the Śāntākuśā, encircling the southern Narmadā.
अग्निहोत्रे महातेजाः प्रस्तारार्थं कुशोत्तमान्
In the Agnihotra, the highly radiant ones use the best kuśa grass for the prastara.
दद्यात्सकृदपि प्राज्ञस्तस्य वक्ष्यामि यत्फलम्
Even if a wise person gives it once, I will declare to you its result.
अन्तर्द्धानं च गच्छन्ति क्षेत्रमासाद्य तत्सदा
Upon reaching that field, they always attain disappearance.
सशल्यानां च सत्त्वानां विशल्यकरणी नदी
There is a river that removes the wounds of beings who are afflicted.
कलिङ्गदेशपश्चार्द्धे शृङ्गे माल्यवतो विभोः
In the western part of the land of Kalinga, on the summit of Mount Malyavat, O Lord,
संमतं देवदैत्यानां श्लोकं चाप्युशना जगौ
A verse approved by gods and demons was indeed sung by Ushanas.
पितॄन्संतर्पयिष्यन्तिश्राद्धे पितृपरायणाः
Those devoted to their ancestors will satisfy the forefathers with śrāddha rites.
सकृदेवार्चितास्तत्र स्वर्गमामरकण्टके
There, those who worship the gods even once attain heaven at Amarakaṇṭaka.
तत्रारुह्य भवेत्पूतः श्राद्धं चैव महाफलम्
Ascending there, one becomes purified, and performing śrāddha yields great fruit.
अधृष्यश्चैव भूतानां देववच्चरते महीम्
He becomes invulnerable to beings and moves upon the earth like a god.
अश्वमेधफलं स्नात्वा तत्र दत्त्वा भवेत्ततः
By bathing there and giving gifts, one obtains the fruit of an Aśvamedha sacrifice.
रुद्रस्तत्र तपस्तेपे देवदेवो महेश्वरः
There, Rudra, the great god of gods, performed austerities.
अब्राह्मणस्य सावित्रीं पठतस्तु प्रणश्यति
If a non-Brahmin recites the Sāvitrī there, it is destroyed.
आरुह्यतं निय मवांस्ततो याति त्रिविष्टपम्
Ascending the prescribed path from there, one goes to heaven.
आपश्चन्दनसंयुक्ताः स्पन्देति सततं ततः
The waters, mixed with sandalwood, always tremble there.
या चन्दनमहाखण्डाद्दक्षिणं याति सागरम्
That which flows south from the great sandalwood mountain reaches the ocean.
शङ्खा भवन्ति शुक्त्यश्च जायते यासु मौक्तिकम्
In those waters, conch shells and oysters are formed, and pearls arise.
आधिभिर्व्याधिभिश्चैव मुक्ता यान्त्यमरावतीम्
Freed from mental and physical afflictions, they go to Amarāvatī.
पापकर्त्तॄनपि पितॄंस्तारयन्ति यथाश्रुति
They deliver even sinful ancestors, as declared in the scriptures.
श्रीपर्वतस्य तीर्थेषु वैकृते च तथा गिरौ
At the holy places of Mount Śrīparvata and also at Vaikṛta mountain,
पलाशाः खदिरा बिल्वाः प्लक्षाश्वत्थविकङ्कताः
Palāśa, khadira, bilva, plakṣa, aśvattha, and vikaṅkata trees (are found there).
