यत्र स्थास्यन्ति दातारस्तत्स्थानं वै निबोधत
Where the givers will abide—know that place.
ब्राह्मं स्थानमवाप्नोति सर्वलोकपुरस्कृतम्
He attains the Brahmic state, honored by all the worlds.
अतो ऽन्यथा तु यो भुङ्क्ते स ऋणं नित्यमश्नुते
But whoever eats otherwise always consumes debt.
तस्मान्निर्वर्तयेत्पञ्च महायज्ञान्सदा बुधः
Therefore, the wise should always perform the five great sacrifices.
बलिं सुविहितं कुर्या दुच्चैरुच्चतरं क्षिपेत्
One should properly offer the bali, casting it high and higher.
तन्निवेद्यो भवेत्पिण्डः पितॄणां यस्तु जीवति
That ball of food should be offered to the ancestors by one who is alive.
निवेद्यं केचिदिच्छन्ति जीवन्त्यपि हि यत्नतः
Some wish for the offering to be made even while they are alive, with great effort.
इच्छन्ति केचिदाचार्यः पश्चात्पिण्डनिवेदनम्
Some teachers desire the offering of the rice-ball to be made afterwards.
तद्धिधर्मार्थकुशलो नेत्युवाच बृहस्मतिः
Bṛhasmati, skilled in dharma and artha, declared that this is not so.
योगात्मानो महात्मानः पितरो योग संभवाः
The ancestors are great souls, whose essence is yoga, and who arise from yoga.
तस्माद्दद्याच्छुचिः पिण्डान्योगेभ्यस्तत्परायणः
Therefore, one who is devoted should give pure rice-balls to those established in yoga.
ब्रह्मणानां सहस्रस्य योगस्थं ग्रासयेद्यदि
If one feeds a thousand Brahmins who are established in yoga,
असतां प्रग्रहो यत्र सतां चैव विमानता
Where there is acceptance by the unworthy and disrespect towards the worthy,
इत्वा मम सधर्माणं बालिशं यस्तु भोजयेत्
Having left my companions in dharma, whoever feeds the foolish,
पिण्डमग्नौ सदा दद्यद्भोगार्थी प्रथमं नरः
A man seeking enjoyment should always first offer the rice-ball into the fire.
उत्तमां कान्तिमन्विच्छन्गोषु नित्यं प्रयच्छति
He who desires the best and most radiant rice-ball always gives it to the crows.
प्रार्थयन्दीर्घामायुश्च वायसेभ्यः प्रयच्छति
Wishing for long life, he gives it to the crows.
एवमेतत्समुद्दिष्टं पिण्डनिर्वपणे फलम्
Thus, the fruit of offering the rice-ball has been described.
पितॄणां स्थानमाकाशं दक्षिणा चैव दिग्भेवेत्
The place of the ancestors is the sky, and the southern direction is their region.
अनुज्ञातस्तु तैर्विप्रैः कामसुद्ध्रियतामित्
Having been permitted by those Brahmins, one should act with pure desire.
अग्रमुद्धृत्य सर्वेषां जुहुयाद्धव्यवाहने
Taking the foremost portion from all, one should offer it into the sacrificial fire.
हुत्वाग्नौ च ततः पिण्डान्निर्वपेद्दक्षिणा मुखः
After offering in the fire, one should place the rice-balls facing south.
उदकान्नयनं कृत्वा पश्चाद्विप्रांश्च भोजयेत्
After bringing water and food, one should then feed the Brahmins.
स्निग्धैरुष्णैः सुगन्धैश्च तर्पयेत्तान्रसैरपि
One should satisfy them with rich, warm, and fragrant juices.
तत्परः श्रद्दधानश्च कामानाप्नोति मानवः
A person who is devoted and faithful attains his desires.
तपो यज्ञांश्च दानं च प्रयच्छन्ति पितामहाः
The forefathers grant austerity, sacrifices, and charity.
आनुपूर्व्येण विहितं तन्मे निगदतः शृणु
That which is prescribed in proper sequence, listen to me as I declare it.
ततो ऽन्निविकिरं कुर्याद्विधिदृष्टेन कर्मणा
Then one should perform the offering of food according to the prescribed rite.
अन्नशेषमनुज्ञाप्य सत्कृत्य द्विजसत्तमान्
Having respectfully obtained permission for the remaining food from the foremost twice-born,
प्राञ्जलिः प्रयतश्चैव अनुगम्य विसर्जयेत्
With joined palms and full attention, one should accompany them and then bid them farewell.
