गन्धदानमलङ्कारमेकैकं निर्वपेद् बुधः
A wise person should offer each one fragrance, gifts, and ornaments.
अभ्यङ्गं दर्भविञ्जूलैस्त्रिभिः कुर्याद्यथाविधि
He should perform anointing with three blades of darbha grass, as prescribed.
निपात्य जानु सर्वेषां वस्त्रार्थं सूत्रमेव वा
Placing the knee down for all, he should give cloth or even a thread.
सकृद्देवपितॄणां स्यात्पितॄणां त्रिभिरुच्यते
For the gods and ancestors, it is said to be done once for the gods, and three times for the ancestors.
चैलमन्त्रेण पिण्डेभ्यो दत्त्वादर्शाञ्जिने हि तम्
Reciting the cloth mantra, he should give to the piṇḍas, and indeed to the darbha seat.
जानु कृत्वा तथा सव्यं भूमौ पितृपरायणः
Then, placing the left knee on the ground, devoted to the ancestors, as prescribed.
आहूय च पितॄन्प्राञ्चः पितृतीर्थेन यत्नतः
Having invoked the ancestors, facing east, with the ancestral part of the hand, carefully.
अन्नाद्यैरेव मुख्यैश्चभक्ष्यैश्चैव पृथग्विधैः
With the chief kinds of food and various separate delicacies.
त्रीन्पिण्डानानुपूर्व्येण सांगुष्ठान्पुष्टिवर्द्धनान्
He should offer three piṇḍas in succession, with the thumb, which increase nourishment.
सव्योत्तराभ्यां पाणिभ्यां धारार्थं मन्त्रमुच्चरन्
With the left and upper hands, for the sake of pouring, reciting the mantra.
दक्षिणस्यां तु पाणिभ्यां प्रथमं पिण्डमुत्सृजेत्
With the right hand, he should first release the piṇḍa.
सव्योत्तराभ्यां पाणिभ्यां धर्मेर्ऽधं समतन्द्रितः
With the left and upper hands, he should, with full attention, offer half for righteousness.
क्षौमं सूत्रं नवं दद्याच्छाणं कार्पासकं तथा
He should give new linen, thread, hemp, and also cotton cloth.
वर्जयेद्यक्षणं यज्ञे यद्यप्यहतवस्त्रजाम्
He should avoid dyed cloth in the sacrifice, even if it is made from undamaged fabric.
श्रेष्ठमाहुस्त्रिककुदमञ्जनं नित्यमेव च
They say that trikakuda is the best ointment, and should always be used.
चन्दनागुरुणी चोभे तमालोशीरपद्मकम्
Both sandalwood and aguru, as well as tamāla, uśīra, and padmaka.
शुक्लाः सुमनसः श्रेष्ठास्तथा पद्मोत्पलानि च
White flowers are considered the best, as are lotuses and utpalas.
तथा हि सुमना नाडीरूपिकास्मकुरण्डिका
Similarly, the flower called sumanā, nāḍīrūpikā, and asmakuraṇḍikā.
यथा गन्धादपेतानि चोग्रगन्धानि यानि च
Those from which the fragrance has departed, and those with strong scents.
द्विजातयो यथोद्दिष्टा नियताः स्युरुदङ्मुखाः
The twice-born, as prescribed, should always face north.
तेषामभिमुखो दद्याद्दर्भत्पिण्डांश्च यत्नतः
One should carefully offer them darbha grass balls, facing them directly.
हरिता वै स पिञ्जालाः पुष्टाः स्निग्धाः समाहिताः
They should be green, with fine roots, nourished, glossy, and well-arranged.
उपमूले तथा नीला विष्टरार्थं कुशोत्तमाः
At the base, they are blue; for the purpose of spreading, the best kuśa grass.
पूर्वं कीर्त्तिमतां श्रेष्ठो बभूवाश्वः प्रजापतिः
Formerly, among the illustrious, the horse became the best, O Prajāpati.
तस्माद्देयाः सदा काशाः श्राद्धकर्मसु पूजिताः
Therefore, kāśa grass should always be given, honored in śrāddha rites.
प्रजाः पुष्टिद्युतिप्रज्ञाकीर्त्तिकान्तिसमन्विताः
Beings endowed with nourishment, brilliance, wisdom, fame, and beauty.
सकृदेवास्तरेद्यर्भान्पिण्डार्थे दक्षिणामुखः
If one crosses children just once for the sake of the offering, facing south.
एकत्र चाधाय मनः श्राद्धं कुर्यात्समाहितः
With mind concentrated in one place, one should perform śrāddha with attention.
रक्षांसि यक्षाः सपिशाचसंघा हता मया यातुधानाश्च सर्वे
Demons, yakṣas, and hosts of piśācas, as well as all yātudhānas, have been slain by me.
शिवां हि बुद्धिं ध्रुवमिच्छमानः क्षिपेद्द्विचातिर्दिशमुत्तरां गतः
Desiring firm and auspicious understanding, one should cast four times toward the north.
