The ancestors, for one desiring nourishment or offspring, again—
Indeed, the duty to the ancestors always surpasses even the duty to the gods.
For the path of yoga is subtle, and there is no decline for the ancestors.
Thus, these are the worlds of the ancestors and also their daughters.
Of them, four are with form, and three among them are formless.
With devotion, hands joined, all the lords of the senses, their minds absorbed in them,
The dark ones and the white-lotus-born, indeed, worship them according to the rite.
The clouds, the Maruts, and also Brahma and the other dwellers in heaven,
Yakshas, Nagas, Suparnas, Kinnaras, together with the Rakshasas,
Thus, these great souls, being duly honored at the śrāddha, are worshipped.
Abandoning the transmigration of the three worlds, and also old age and death,
The Pitamahas grant complete detachment and endlessness.
Without the yogic powers and sovereignty, liberation is by no means attained.
Of all the dharmas, the dharma of liberation is the highest and eternal.
Garments of pearls and beryl, and chariots yoked with horses and elephants,
Chariots adorned with swans and peacocks, and set with pearls and beryl,
Thousands of aerial cars, accompanied by hosts of celestial nymphs,
The Pitāmahas, always pleased, bestow these upon human beings.
Thus ends the tenth chapter, named 'The Account of the Realm of the Ancestors,' in the third section, the Upoddhāta, of the middle part of the Vāyu-recited Śrī Brahmāṇḍa Mahāpurāṇa.
Even the story, sight, or gift of silver—
By this gift, O truly good son, the ancestors are indeed uplifted.
Or the offering of svadhā by kings—whatever is given in that, is imperishable.
It destroys evil, grants Brahmic radiance, and uplifts cattle and sons.
The objects must be pure, or in accordance with the discipline of the tridaṇḍin yogi.
It increases lifespan, fame, offspring, wealth, wisdom, and lineage.
Everywhere, a square plot of one aratni in measure, well arranged,
Brings prosperity, long life, health, and increases strength and complexion.
These, measuring one aratni, should be adorned with silver.
They should be made facing east and south, firm and without holes.
Purification is to be done with the milk of goats and cows, and also with water.
