सर्वव्यापी विनिर्मुक्तो भविष्यति महामुनिः
He will become a great sage, all-pervading and liberated.
तान्वक्ष्यामि द्विजश्रेष्ठाः प्रभामूर्त्तिमतो गणान्
O best of twice-born, I shall tell you of the groups who possess radiant forms.
पितरो देवलोकेषु ज्योतिर्भासिषु भास्वराः
The ancestors in the worlds of the gods are shining and radiant in brilliance.
एतेषां मानसी कन्या योगोत्पत्तिरितिश्रुता
Among them, a daughter born from the mind is known as arising through yoga.
एकशृङ्गेति विख्याता भृगूणां कीर्तिवर्द्धिनी
She is famed as Ekaśṛṅgā, the increaser of the glory of the Bhṛgus.
एते ह्यङ्गिरसः पुत्राः साध्यैः संवर्द्धिताः पुरा
These indeed are the sons of Aṅgiras, formerly raised by the Sādhyas.
तान्क्षत्रियगणाः सप्त भावयन्ति फलार्थिनः
Seven groups of kṣatriyas honor them, seeking reward.
मता या जननी देवी खट्वाङ्गस्य महात्मनः
She who is considered the mother is the goddess, wife of the great-souled Khaṭvāṅga.
अग्नेर्जन्म तदा दृष्ट्वा शाण्डिल्यस्य महात्मनः
Then, seeing the birth of Agni, of the great-souled Śāṇḍilya,
सत्यव्रतं महात्मानं ते ऽपि स्वर्गजितो नराः
Those men, conquerors of heaven, also honored the great-souled Satyavrata.
समुत्पन्नस्य पुलहादुत्पन्नास्तस्य ते सुताः
Born from Pulaha, his sons were then produced.
एतान्वैश्यगणाः श्राद्धे भाव यन्ति फलार्थिनः
Those groups of Vaiśyas honor them at the śrāddha, seeking reward.
ययातेर्जननी साध्वी पत्नी सा नहुषस्य च
She, the virtuous mother of Yayāti, was also the wife of Nahuṣa.
हैरण्यगर्भस्य सुताः शूद्रास्तां भावयन्त्युत
The sons of Hiraṇyagarbha are the Śūdras; they indeed honor her.
एतेषां मानसी कन्या नर्मदा सरितां वरा
Among these, the mind-born daughter is Narmada, the best of rivers.
जननी सात्रसद्दस्योः पुरुकुत्सपरिग्रहः
She is the mother of Satrasa and Sadasya, and was taken by Purukutsa.
मन्वन्तरादौ श्राद्धानि प्रवर्तयति सर्वशः
At the beginning of the Manvantara, she fully establishes the rites of ancestor worship.
तस्मादेतत्स्वधर्मेण देयं श्राद्धं च श्रद्धया
Therefore, one should offer śrāddha according to one's own duty, with faith.
दत्तं स्वधां पुरोधाय श्राद्धं प्रीणाति वै पितॄन्
When śrāddha is performed, offering svadhā first, it truly satisfies the ancestors.
सोमश्चाप्यायनं कृत्वा ह्यगनेर्वेवस्वतस्य च
Soma, having performed the rite of increase for Aganerva and Vasvata,
पितरः पुष्टिकामस्य प्रजाकामस्य वा पुनः
The ancestors, for one desiring nourishment or offspring, again—
देवकार्यादपि सदा पितृकार्यं विशिष्यते
Indeed, the duty to the ancestors always surpasses even the duty to the gods.
न हि योग गतिः सूक्ष्मा पितॄणां न पितृक्षयः
For the path of yoga is subtle, and there is no decline for the ancestors.
इत्येते पितरश्चैव लोका दुहितरश्च वै
Thus, these are the worlds of the ancestors and also their daughters.
चत्वारो मूर्तिमन्तस्तु त्रयस्तेषाममूर्तयः
Of them, four are with form, and three among them are formless.
भक्त्या प्राञ्जलयः सर्वेसेंद्रास्तद्गतमानसाः
With devotion, hands joined, all the lords of the senses, their minds absorbed in them,
कृष्णाः श्वेतांबुजाश्चैव विधिव त्पूजयन्त्युत
The dark ones and the white-lotus-born, indeed, worship them according to the rite.
मेघाश्च मरुतश्चैव ब्रह्माद्याश्च दिवौकसः
The clouds, the Maruts, and also Brahma and the other dwellers in heaven,
यक्षा नागाः सुपर्णाश्च किन्नरा राक्षसैः सह
Yakshas, Nagas, Suparnas, Kinnaras, together with the Rakshasas,
एवमेते महात्मानः श्राद्धे सत्कृत्य पूजिताः
Thus, these great souls, being duly honored at the śrāddha, are worshipped.
