इत्येतद्रूपसाधर्म्यं राक्षसानां स्मृतं बुधैः
Such is the form and nature of the Rākṣasas, as remembered by the wise.
पुलहस्य मृगाः पुत्राः सर्वे व्यालाश्च दंष्ट्रिणः
All the beasts and fanged predators are the sons of Pulaha.
वानराः किन्नराश्चेव मायुः किंपुरुषास्तथा
Monkeys, Kinnaras, Māyus, and also Kiṃpuruṣas,
अनपत्यः क्रतुर्ह्यस्मिन्स्मृतो वैवस्वतेंऽतरे
Kratu is remembered as childless among the descendants of Vaivasvata.
अत्रेर्वशं प्रवक्ष्यामि तृतीयस्य प्रजापतेः
Now I shall recount the lineage of Atri, the third Prajāpati.
बद्राश्वस्य घृताच्यां वै दशाप्सरसि सूनवः
Badrāśva had ten sons by Ghṛtācī, the Apsaras.
बला हला च सप्तैता या च गोचपलाः स्मृताः
The seven are Balā, Halā, and those known as Gocapalā.
तत्र यो वंशकृच्चासौ तस्य नाम प्रभाकरः
Among them, the one who played the flute is named Prabhākara.
स्वर्भानुना हते सूर्ये पतमाने दिवो महीम्
When Svarbhānu struck the sun and it was falling from the sky to the earth,
स्वस्ति तेस्त्विति चौक्तो वै पतन्निह दिवाकरः
the falling sun was told, 'May there be well-being for you,' and thus it was said.
अत्रिश्रेष्ठानि गोत्राणि यश्चकार महातपाः
The great ascetic Atri established the foremost lineages.
स तासु जनयामास पुत्रानात्मसमानकान्
In those lineages he begot sons equal to himself.
स्वस्त्यात्रेया इति ख्याता ऋषयो वेदपारगाः
They are renowned as the Svāstyātreyas, sages accomplished in the Vedas.
दत्तो ह्यनुमतो ज्येष्ठो दुर्वासास्तस्य चानुजः
Dattā, indeed, is the eldest, Anumata, and Durvāsas his younger brother.
अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीमं श्लोकं पौराणिकाः पुरा
Here too, the ancient bards recite this verse:
दत्तात्रेयं तनुं विषणोः पुराणज्ञाः प्रजक्षते
The knowers of the Purāṇas declare Dattātreya as an incarnation of Viṣṇu.
श्यावाश्वा मुद्गलाश्चैव वाग्भूतकगवि स्थिराः
Śyāvāśva, Mudgala, Vāgbhū, Takaka, and Gavi are steadfast.
काश्यपो नारदश्चैव पर्वतो ऽरुन्धती तथा
Kāśyapa, Nārada, Parvata, and also Arundhatī.
नारदस्तु वसिष्ठायारुन्धती प्रत्यपादयत्
Nārada gave Arundhatī to Vasiṣṭha.
पुरा देवासुरे तस्मिन्संग्रामे तारकामये
Long ago, in that battle between the gods and asuras called Tārakāmaya,
वसिष्ठस्तपसा धीमाञ्जीवयामास वै प्रजाः
Vasiṣṭha, wise and austere, revived the beings by his penance.
तास्तेन जीवयामास कारुण्यादौषधेन सः
He revived them with a medicinal herb out of compassion.
स्वाङ्गज जनयच्छक्तिरदृश्यन्त्यां पराशरम्
From his own body, Śakti was born to Parāśara from the unseen one.
द्वैपायनादरण्यां वै शुको जज्ञे गुणान्वितः
From Dvaipāyana and Araṇyā, Śuka, endowed with virtues, was born.
भूरिश्रवाः प्रभुः शंभुः कृष्णो गौरश्च पञ्चमः
Bhūrishravā, the mighty; Shambhu; Krishna; and Gaura as the fifth.
जननी ब्रह्मदत्तस्य पत्नी सा त्वणुहस्य च
She is the mother of Brahmadatta and also the wife of Tvaṇu.
ऊष्मादा दारिकाश्चैव नीलाश्चैव पराशराः
From Ūṣmā were born the Dārikās, and also the Nīlas, descendants of Parāśara.
अत ऊर्द्ध्व निबोध त्वमिन्द्रप्रमति संभवम्
Now, further, learn from me about the origin of Indrapramati.
कुणीति यः समाख्यात इन्द्रप्रमतिरुच्यते
He who is called Kuṇīti is known as Indrapramati.
उपमन्युः सुतस्तस्य यस्येमे ह्यौपमन्यवः
Upamanyu is his son, from whom the Upamanyu lineage descends.
