वत्सारश्चासितश्चैव तावुभौ ब्रह्म वादना
Vatsāra and Asita, both speakers of Brahman, were born.
रेभ्यस्य रैभ्यो विज्ञेयो निध्रुवस्य निबोधत
Know that from Rebhi came Raibhya; now hear of Nidhruva.
निध्रुवस्य तु या पत्नी माता वै कुण्डपायिराम्
The wife of Nidhruva, the mother, was Kuṇḍapāyirā.
शाण्डिल्यानां वरः श्रीमान् देवलः सुमहायशाः
Among the Śāṇḍilyas, the illustrious and greatly renowned Devala was the best.
वज्रिप्रभृतयो देवा देवास्तस्य प्रजा स्विमाः
The gods led by Vajri are his offspring, the gods themselves.
अथावशिष्टे तस्मिंस्तु द्वापरे संप्रर्त्तिते
Then, when that Dvāpara age remained,
राज्यवर्द्धनकस्तस्य सुधृतिस्तत्सुतो नरः
Rājyavardhana was his son, and Sudhṛti was the son of that man.
बुधस्तस्या भवद्यस्या तृणबिन्दुर्महीपतिः
From him was born Budha, whose son was Tṛṇabindu, the king.
तस्य चेलविला कन्यालंबुषागर्भसंभवा
His daughter was Ilavilā, born from the womb of Lambuṣā.
बृहस्पतिबृर्हत्कीर्तिर्देवाचार्यस्तु कीर्त्तितः
Bṛhaspati, of great fame, is celebrated as the preceptor of the gods.
पुष्पोत्कटां च वाकां च सुते माल्यवतस्तथा
He begot Puṣpotkaṭā and Vākā, and also Malyavat’s son.
ज्येष्ठं वैश्रवणं तस्य सुषुवे देववर्णिनी
The goddess of divine form gave birth to Jyeṣṭha Vaiśravaṇa.
राक्षसेन च रूपेण आसुरेण बलेन च
With the form of a rākṣasa and the strength of an asura,
अष्टदंष्ट्रं हरिछ्मश्रुं शङ्कुकर्णं विलोहितम्
Eight fangs, tawny beard, conch-shaped ears, and blood-red hue,
वैवर्त्तज्ञानसंपन्नं संबुद्धं चैव संभवात्
Endowed with knowledge of transformation, awakened at birth,
कुत्सायां क्विति शब्दो ऽयं शरीरं बेरमुच्यते
In contempt, the sound 'kvi' is uttered; the body is called 'bera.'
यस्माद्विश्रवसो ऽपत्यं सादृश्याद्विश्रवा इव
Because he was the offspring of Viśravas, and resembled Viśrava,
ऋद्रयां कुबेरो ऽजनयद्विश्रुतं नलकूबरम्
Kubera, with Ṛḍra, begot the renowned Nalakūbara.
विभीषणचतुर्थांस्तु कैकस्यजनयत्सुतान्
Kaikasi gave birth to four sons, with Vibhīṣaṇa as the fourth.
चतुष्पाद्विंशतिभुजो महाकायो महाबलः
He had four feet, twenty arms, a gigantic body, and immense strength.
राक्षसेनौजसा युक्तो रूपेण च बलेन च
Endowed with rākṣasa vigor, form, and strength,
विसर्गदारुणः क्रूरो रावणो द्रावणस्तु सः
Fierce in emission, cruel, he was Rāvaṇa, also called Drāvaṇa.
चतुर्युगानि राजाभूत् त्रयोदश स राक्षसः
That rākṣasa was king for thirteen cycles of four ages.
नियुतान्येकषष्टिं च शरदां गणितानि वै
He ruled for sixty-one hundred thousand autumns, counted.
देवतानामृषीणां च घोरं कृत्वा प्रजागरम्
He caused dreadful wakefulness among the gods and sages.
रामं दाशरथिं प्राप्य सगणः क्षयमीयिवान्
Upon encountering Rāma, son of Daśaratha, he perished with his retinue.
पुष्पोत्कटायाः पुत्रास्ते कन्या कुम्भीनसी तथा
Puṣpotkaṭā’s sons were these; and Kumbhīnasī, a daughter.
कन्यानुपालिका चैव वाकायाः प्रसवः स्मृतः
And Anupālikā, a daughter; thus is Vākā’s offspring remembered.
दारुणाभिजनाः सर्वे देवैरपि दुरासदाः
All are of fierce lineage, difficult even for the gods to approach.
यक्षाणां चैव सर्वेषां पौलस्त्या चे च राक्षसाः
And all the Yakṣas, as well as the Paulastyas and Rākṣasas,
