श्येन्यनन्तं विजज्ञे तु पुत्रपौत्रं द्विजोत्तमाः
Śyenī produced countless sons and grandsons, O best of twice-born.
इरा विजज्ञे कन्या वै तिस्रः कमललोजनाः
Irā gave birth to three daughters, lotus-eyed maidens.
लता चैवालता चैति वीरुधा चैति तत्र या
Latā, Ālatā, and Vīrudhā were born there.
पुष्पैः फलग्रहैर्वृक्षानलता समसूयत
From flowers and fruit-bearing trees, Latā was born.
वीरुधस्तदपत्यं हि वंशश्चात्र समाप्यते
Vīrudhā is their offspring, and thus the lineage is completed here.
तेषां पुत्राश्च पौत्राश्च यैरिदं संततं जगत्
Their sons and grandsons are those by whom this world is sustained.
मारीचो वः प्रजासर्गः समासेन प्रकीर्त्तितः

अदितिर्धर्मशीला तु बलशीला दितिस्तथा
Aditi is of virtuous conduct, and Diti is of powerful nature.
गन्धशीला मुनिश्चैव क्रोधाध्यायनशीलिनी
Gandha is inclined to fragrance, Muni to contemplation, and Krodhā to the practice of anger.
क्रोधशीला तथा कदूः क्रोधा च शुचिशीलिनी
Krodha is of angry disposition, Kadū is likewise, and Śuci is devoted to purity.
इरानुग्रहशीला तु ह्यनायुर्भक्षणे रता
Irā is inclined to compassion, Anāyu delights in eating.
धर्मतः शीलतो बुद्ध्या क्षमया बलरूपतः
By righteousness, by conduct, by intellect, by forgiveness, and by strength and form—
मातुस्तुल्याभिजाताश्च कश्यपस्यात्मजाः प्रभोः
The sons of Kaśyapa, O lord, are born equal in lineage to their mothers.
पिशाचाः पशवश्चैव मृगाः पतगवीरुधः
Piśācas, cattle, wild animals, birds, and plants—
मनुष्यप्रकृतीस्तस्माद्देवादींश्च विजानते
From them, one understands the natures of humans, gods, and others.
मन्वन्तरेषु सर्वेषु तस्माच्छ्रेष्ठास्तु मानुषाः
Therefore, among all the Manvantaras, humans are the best.
ततोर्ऽवाक्स्रोतसस्ते वै उत्पद्यन्ते सुरासुराः
From them, the gods and asuras, who move downward, are born.
इत्येष वंशप्रभवः प्रसंख्यातस्तु विस्तरात्
Thus, the origin of the lineage has been enumerated in detail.
यक्षरक्षः पिशाचानां सुपर्णोरगपक्षिणाम्
Of Yakṣas, Rākṣasas, Piśācas, Suparṇas, serpents, and birds—
कृमिकीटपतङ्गानां क्षुद्राणां जलचारिणाम्
Of worms, insects, flying creatures, small beings, and aquatic animals—
श्रोतव्यश्चैव सततं ग्राह्यश्चैवानसूयतः
This should always be heard and accepted without envy.
अपत्यलाभं लभते च पुष्कलं प्रियं धनं प्रेत्य च शोभनां गतिम्
One obtains abundant offspring, beloved wealth, and after death, an auspicious state.
प्रतिष्ठितासु सर्वासु चरासु स्थावरासु च
When all moving and unmoving beings had been established—
ततः क्रमेण राज्यानि आदेष्टुमुपचक्रमे
Then, in due order, he began to assign the kingdoms.
यज्ञानां तपसां चैव सोमं राज्ये ऽभ्यषेचयत्
