शिंबिभ्यो माषमुद्गानां जायन्ते कृमयस्तथा
From lentils and mung beans, worms are born from the śiṃbhi plants.
मुद्गेभ्यः पनसेभ्यश्च तण्डुलेभ्यस्तथैव च
From mung beans, jackfruit, and likewise from rice grains, creatures arise.
अन्येभ्यो ऽपि च जायन्ते न हि तेभ्यश्चिरं सदा
From other sources too, beings are born, yet they do not endure for long.
बहून्यहानि निक्षिप्ते संभवन्ति च गोमये
When dung is left for many days, numerous creatures come forth.
संस्वेदजाश्च जायन्ते वृश्चिकाः शुष्कगोमयात्
Scorpions, born from sweat, also arise from dried cow dung.
मत्स्याद्यिश्च विविधा अन्नकूटे विशेषतः
Various kinds of fish and others especially appear in heaps of food.
तथन्यानि च सक्ष्माणि जलौकादीनि जातयः
Likewise, other small creatures, such as leeches and their kinds, are born.
माक्षिकाणां विकाराणि जायन्ते जातयो ऽपरे
Different forms of flies arise, and other types of their offspring.
मशकानां विकाराणि भ्रमराणां तथैव च
Different forms of mosquitoes and likewise of bees are produced.
मणिच्छेदाः स्मृता व्यालाः पोतजाः परिकीर्त्तिताः
Serpents born from the splitting of gems, and those born from boats, are described.
एवमादिरसंख्यातो गणः संस्वेदजो मया
Thus, I have enumerated the group of sweat-born beings from the beginning.
ये चान्ये नैरृताः सत्त्वास्ते स्मृता उपसर्गजाः
And those other beings called Nairṛta, are remembered as born from afflictions.
प्रायेण देवाः सर्वे वै विज्ञेया ह्युपपत्तिजाः
Nearly all the gods, indeed, are to be understood as born through proper means.
दुल्लोलकं ललोहं च सरमा द्वौ व्यजायत
Dullolaka and Laloha, along with Saramā, two were born.
श्यामाश्च शबलाश्चैव लोहिता अञ्जनास्तथा
Śyāmā, Śabalā, Lohitā, and Añjanā were also born.
सर्पाणां सुरसा जज्ञे शन्त नैकशिरोभृताम्
Surasā gave birth to the serpents, especially those bearing many heads.
तमोबहुल इत्येष गणः क्रोधवशान्वयः
This group, abundant in darkness, is said to be descended from wrath.
षट् कन्यास्त्वभिविख्यातास्ता म्रायाश्च विजज्ञिरे
Six daughters, renowned, were born to Mrāyā.
अरुणस्य च गृद्री तु वीर्यवन्तौ महाबलौ
And Gṛdrī, of Aruṇa, were two sons, mighty and powerful.
संपातेर्विजयाः पुत्रा द्विरास्याः प्रसहश्च ये
The sons of Saṃpāti were Vijaya, Dvirāsya, and Prasaha.
भार्या गरुत्मतश्चैव भासी क्रैञ्ची तथा शुकी
The wives of Garutmān were Bhāsī, Kraiñcī, and Śukī.
शुकीगरुत्मतः पुत्रान्सुषुवे षट् परिश्रुतान्
Śukī bore six renowned sons to Garutmān.
तेषां पुत्राश्च पौत्राश्च गरुडानां महात्मनाम्
Their sons and grandsons were the great-souled Garuḍas.
पुत्रपौत्रविसर्गाच्च तेषां वै वंशविस्तरैः
From their offspring and descendants, by the expansion of their lineage,
शाल्मलिद्वीपमखिलं देवकूटं च पर्वतम्
The entire Śālmalī island and the Devakūṭa mountain,
पर्णमालं सुकेशं च शतशृङ्गं तथाचलम्
Parṇamāla, Sukeśa, and the mountain Śataśṛṅga,
प्रचण्डवायुप्रजवैर्दीपितैः पद्मरागिभिः
Were illuminated by those born of fierce winds, shining like padmarāga gems.
भासीपुत्राः स्मृता भासा उलूकाः काककुक्कुटाः
The sons of Bhāsī are remembered as Bhāsā, owls, crows, and roosters.
क्रैञ्चा वाध्रीणसाः श्येनाः कुरराः सारसा बकाः
Kraiñcā, Vādhrīṇasā, hawks, kurarā birds, cranes, and herons.
धृतराष्ट्री तु हंसाश्च कलहंसांश्च भामिनी
Dhṛtarāṣṭrī gave birth to swans and beautiful kalahaṃsas.
