श्यामत्वग्रसनाशुण्डा नागाः पीनायता ननाः
Elephants with dark skin, large mouths, and thick, broad trunks.
भार्या चैवाङ्गना तस्य नीलवल्लक्षणौ सुतौ
His wife is a woman, and his two sons are marked by a bluish hue.
नीचैर्बद्धाः कुले तस्य जायन्ते निबिडा गजाः
In his lineage, elephants are born in close groups, bound together by family ties.
तस्य प्रहारी संपातिः पृथुश्चेति सुतास्त्रयः
His three sons are named Prahārī, Sampāti, and Pṛthu.
जायन्ते मृदुसंभोगा वंशे तस्य मतङ्गजाः
In his line, elephants are born who are gentle in their unions.
सुतौ जातौ तयोश्चापि प्रमाथिपुरुषौ स्मृतौ
And two sons were born to them, remembered as powerful men.
सुदर्शनाः सुवर्ष्माणः पद्माभाः परिमण्डलाः
They are handsome, well-formed, lotus-like, and perfectly rounded.
जज्ञे चान्द्रमसः साम्नः कुमुदः कुमुदद्युतिः
From the Sāman of the moon was born Kumuda, shining like a kumuda flower.
शैलजीमूतसंकाशान्सुबुद्धान्बलिनो वरान्
They are like mountains and clouds, possessing great wisdom and strength.
एतान्देवासुरे युद्धे जयार्थं जगृहुः सुराः
The gods took these for victory in the battle between gods and demons.
एतेषां चान्वये जातान्विनीतांस्त्रिदशा ददुः
And the gods gave well-trained ones born in their lineage to the Thirty-three.
द्विरदो रदनद्वाभ्यां हस्ती हस्तात्करात्करी
An elephant is called dvirada because of its two tusks, hastī because of its hand-like trunk, and karātkarī for the same reason.
कुञ्जरः कुञ्जचारित्वान्नागो नगम्यमस्य यत्
It is called kuñjara because it acts like a kuñja, nāga because it is fit for mountains.
सामजः सामजातत्वादिति निर्वचनक्रमः
It is called sāmaja because it is born from the Sāman; thus goes the sequence of names.
बलस्यानवबोधो यो या चैषां गूढमुष्कता
Their strength is not fully known, and their hidden testicles are also noted.
देवदानगन्धर्वपिशाचोरगरक्षसाम्
Of the gods, donors, gandharvas, piśācas, serpents, and rākṣasas—
संभूतिश्च प्रसूतिश्च नामनिर्वचनं तथा
Their origin, birth, and the explanation of their names are likewise described.
कौशिक्या ह्यासमुद्रात्तु गङ्गायश्च यदुत्तरम्
North of the Ganges, up to the ocean, is the region of Kauśikī.
उत्तरं चैव विध्यस्य गङ्गाया दक्षिणं च यत्
To the north of the Vidhya and to the south of the Ganga,
अपरेणोत्कलं चैव कावेरीभ्यश्च पश्चिमम्
And beyond, to Utkala, and to the west of the Kaveri rivers,
अपरेणतु लौहित्यमासिंधोः पश्चिमेन तु
And further, to the Lauhitya, and to the west of the Sindhu,
भूता विजज्ञे भूतांस्तु रुद्रस्यानुचरानिह
Beings were born—these beings here are the attendants of Rudra.
लंबकर्णान्प्रलंबौष्ठान् लंबजिह्वांस्तनूदरान्
With pendant ears, hanging lips, long tongues, and thin bellies,
सकृष्णगौरान्नीलांश्च श्वेतान्वै लोहिताननान्
Black, tawny, blue, white, and red-faced ones,
मुञ्जकेशान्त्दृष्टरोम्णः सर्वयज्ञोपवीतिनः
With muñja grass hair, visible body hair, all wearing sacred threads,
चण्डांश्च विकटांश्चैव निर्मितांश्च द्विजिह्वकान्
Fierce and misshapen ones, and those created with double tongues,
सरः श्रेष्ठसमुद्राद्रिनदीपुलिनसेविनः
Frequenters of the best lakes, seas, mountains, rivers, and riverbanks,
दंष्ट्रिणो नखिनश्चैव निर्दन्तांश्च विजिह्वकान्
With fangs, with claws, toothless ones, and those with split tongues,
एकपादान्द्विपादांश्च त्रिपादान्बहुपादकान्
With one foot, two feet, three feet, and many-footed ones,
सर्वत्रगातप्रतिघातब्रह्मज्ञान्कामरूपिणः
Moving everywhere, unimpeded, knowing Brahman, assuming any form at will,
