गृहेषु गृहगर्भेषु गृहवासावलंबिनः
They reside in homes, within the interiors of houses, and depend on household life.
तथा वनचराश्चैव स्वभावात्समवस्थिताः
Likewise, there are those who dwell in forests, established by their own nature.
नीलजीमूतवर्णाश्च कपिला केकरारुणाः
Some are colored like dark rain clouds, tawny, spotted, or reddish.
नखदंष्ट्रायुधा घोरा मयूरसमभाषणाः
Terrifying, armed with claws and fangs, and speaking like peacocks.
श्यामश्च शबलश्चैव यमस्यानुचरौ स्मृतौ
The dark and the mottled ones are remembered as attendants of Yama.
श्रुतिमाप्तः पुनर्वंशः सारमेयेषु सर्वदा
The lineage is always preserved among the dogs, according to tradition.
विषादयन्ति च नरान्सर्वजातिसमन्वितान्
They bring distress to people, possessing all kinds of qualities.
य इदं शृणुयाज्जन्म दंष्ट्रिणां श्रावयेत्तु यः
Whoever hears or recites this account of the birth of fanged creatures,
तात्कालमरणं चैव भवतीति विनिर्णयः
It is determined that death occurs at that very moment.
वानप्रस्था श्रितं धर्ममाप्नोति मुनिसेवितम्
A forest-dweller who follows this dharma attains the virtue honored by sages.
च्यवते न च ज्ञानेन जायते देवयोनिषु
He does not fall from knowledge and is born among the divine beings.
ऋक्षा मार्जारलोहासा वानरा मायवस्तथा
Bears, cats, reddish ones, monkeys, and those skilled in illusion likewise.
एषां प्रणेता सर्वेषां वाली राजा प्रतापवान्
Vali, the mighty king, is the leader of them all.
प्रसह्य हन्ता रौद्राणामसुराणां बलीयसाम्
He forcefully slew the fierce and powerful asuras.
पक्ष एष समुद्दिष्टो महेन्द्रस्य सहायवान्
This group is designated as the ally of Mahendra.
इत्येते हरयः प्रोक्ता इरावत्या निबोधत
Thus these Vanaras of the Iravati have been described; listen further.
हस्ताभ्यां परिगृह्याथ रथन्तरमगायत
Then, grasping with both hands, they sang the Rathantara.
संप्रायच्छदिरावत्यै पुत्रार्थं स तु भौवनः
He, the lord of beings, gave it to Iravati for the sake of a son.
देवराजोपवाह्यत्वात्प्रथमः स मतङ्गराट्
Because he was first yoked by the king of the gods, he is called Matanga-raja.
अञ्जनस्यैकमूलस्य सुवर्णाभस्य हस्तिनः
Of Anjana, the golden-hued elephant with a single root.
तस्य पुत्रोंऽजनश्चैव सुप्रतीकश्च वामनः
His sons are Anjana and also Supratika and Vamana.
दिग्गजान्बलिनश्चैवाभ्रमुर्ज नयताप्सुगान्
He led the mighty guardian elephants and the cloud-strong water-bearers.
संकीर्णो ह्यञ्जनो यो ऽसावौपवाह्यो यमस्य सः
That Anjana, who is variegated, is the one yoked to Yama.
पद्मो मन्दस्तु यो गौरो द्विपो ह्यैलविलस्य च
Padma, Manda, and the pale elephant of Ilavila.
पद्मोत्तमः पद्मागुल्मो गजो वातगजो गजः
Padmottama, Padmagulma, the elephant Padma, and the wind-elephant.
उदग्रभावेनो पेता जायन्ते तस्य चान्वये
Those born in his line possess elevated natures.
सामजांस्तु प्रवक्ष्यामि नागानन्यानपि क्रमात्
Now I will describe in order the Samaja elephants and other Nagas.
जातौ नाम्ना श्रुतौ ताभ्यां सुप्रतीकप्रमर्दनौ
Among those two, Supratika and Pramardana are renowned by birth and name.
बलिनः शङ्किताश्चैव स्मृतास्तद्वंशिनो गजाः
The elephants of that lineage are known as powerful and wary.
ताम्र पर्णश्च तत्पुत्राः संघचारिविषाणिनः
Tamra and Parna are their sons, moving in herds with curved tusks.
