तत्रावर्त्तत गर्भो वै अण्डस्याभ्यन्तरे बली
There, within the egg, a powerful embryo developed.
सर्वतो निर्मितं ज्ञात्वा गर्भं ते त्दृततेजसः
Knowing that the embryo was formed on all sides, they spoke thus, full of splendor:
बलं तेजो ऽस्य भविता निर्मितस्याधिकं विभो
O lord, the strength and energy of this one, when born, will surpass that of the created.
सर्वभूतानि यानीह स्यावराणि चरणि च
All beings here, whether lower or moving,
यदेडे स्थापितं तेजो बलं च द्विजसत्तम
Whatever energy and strength was established, O best of twice-born,
श्रुतितेजः प्रभावश्च धक्षते सर्वतोंऽजसा
The power of his heard energy will burn up everything instantly.
बलं चाण्डे चकाराथ ततस्त्वण्डान्तरे शिशुः
Then, within the egg, the child exerted its strength.
तत्तूदराद्विनिष्क्रान्तं मृतपिण्डोपमं स तु
From its abdomen emerged something resembling a lifeless lump.
शकले द्वे समास्थाय स एकस्मिन्नपश्यत
Taking hold of the two fragments, he observed one of them.
तत्समुद्यम्य चोत्थायादिन्युत्संगे निवेद्य च
Raising it up and standing, he placed it upon his lap and presented it.
तेन मार्त्तण्ड इति वै कथ्यते सविता बुधैः
Therefore, the wise call Savitā 'Mārttaṇḍa.'
ये ते अण्डकपाले द्वे तद्बलं परमं मतम्
Those two shells of the egg are considered to possess supreme power.
उदरे प्रवेशयामास तस्याः स जननेच्छया
He entered the womb with the desire to be born.
देवोपवाह्या राजानो हस्तिनो बलवत्तराः
Kings, elephants, and those stronger than gods are carried away.
उत्तरत्र च वो भूयस्तेषां वक्ष्यामि विस्तरम्

भगवान्सविता साक्षात्प्रभासयति रश्मिभिः
The blessed Savitā directly illuminates with his rays.
बाह्यं तमोवृतं सर्वं तत्प्रमाणमशेषतः
He dispels all external darkness completely by his measure.
श्रुतं भगवतो व्यासात्पाराशर्यान्महात्मनः
This has been heard from the blessed Vyāsa, son of Parāśara, the great soul.
विमृश्य बहुधा तत्तु पुनरन्यैः पृथक्पृथक्
Having considered it in many ways, others have separately examined it.
अभयो विचरत्येव जात्यन्तरशतं गतः
The fearless one continues to roam, having passed through hundreds of births.
कथ्यते वा कथा यस्य न तं विद्धि समानकम्
If a story is told about someone, know that he is not the same as you.
ऋक्षस्य भगिनी रक्षा वानरस्य बलीयसः
The sister of the bear, or the protector of the mighty monkey.
ऋक्षराजं महाप्राज्ञं जांबवन्तं यशस्विनम्
The wise and renowned king of bears, Jāmbavān.
वासुदेवस्य सा दत्ता पित्रा राजीवलोचना
She was given to Vāsudeva by her father, the lotus-eyed one.
जयन्तो ऽथ च सर्वज्ञो मृगराट् संकृतिर्जयः
Jayanta, then Sarvajna, the lord of beasts, Sankriti, and Jaya.
भोजो राक्षसजिच्चैव पिशाचवनगोचरौ
Bhoja, the slayer of Rakshasas, and those who dwell among ghosts and in forests.
तेषां पुत्राश्च पौत्राश्च शतशो ऽथ सहस्रशः
Their sons and grandsons number in the hundreds and thousands.
मार्जारस्य तु मार्जारा वाद्याः पुत्रा महाबलाः
The offspring of the cat are also cats, renowned and possessing great strength.
आचार्याः श्वापदादीनां शरभाणां महौजसः
The teachers of wild beasts are the Sharabhas, endowed with mighty energy.
लाघवे प्लवने युक्ताः सर्वसत्त्वावसादकाः
They are skilled in agility and leaping, and capable of subduing all creatures.
