मौहूर्तिकीं गतिं गत्वा चतुः परशर्वानुपस्पृशन्
Having attained the speed of a moment, he touched the four directions.
मनोवायुगतिर्भूत्वा वाली व्यपगतक्रमः
Vālī, moving with the swiftness of mind and wind, abandoned all restraint.
वाली बाहुविनिर्मुक्तं विह्वलं नष्टचेतसम्
Vālī, having released him from his arms, saw him bewildered and his mind lost.
सिच्यांभसा सुशीतेन ह्यापादतलमस्तकात्
With cool water from a vessel, from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head,
उवाच रणचण्डं तं राक्षसेंद्रं कपीश्वरः
the lord of monkeys spoke to that fierce lord of the Rākṣasas in battle.
असंख्येयं बलं जित्वा यमं ससचिवं रणे
Having conquered countless forces and Yama with his ministers in battle,
मरुद्गणं तथा रुद्रानादित्यानश्विनौ वसून्
as well as the hosts of Maruts, the Rudras, the Ādityas, the Aśvins, and the Vasus,
सिद्धांस्तथैव गन्धर्वान्यक्षरक्षोभुजङ्गमान्
the Siddhas, likewise the Gandharvas, Yakṣas, Rākṣasas, and serpents,
तथा भूतपिशाचांश्च विवृद्धबलदर्पितान्
and also the Bhūtas and Piśācas, proud with increased strength,
कथमीदृग्गुणो भूत्वा मनोवायुसमो जवे
How is it that, possessing such qualities and swiftness equal to mind and wind,
विद्राव्य सर्वोंल्लोकेषु वीरान्परपुरञ्ज्यः
having routed all the heroes in the worlds, conqueror of others' cities,
विक्षोभ्य सागरान्सप्त सप्तकृत्वो महारथः
having agitated the seven oceans seven times, O great chariot-warrior,
दुर्बलेन मया क्रान्तो वानरेण विशेषतः
I have been subdued by a weak monkey, especially by me.
प्रब्रूहि हेतुना केन ब्रह्मन्राक्षसपुङ्गव
Tell me, O Brahmin, O foremost of Rākṣasas, for what reason this has happened.
वयनं वालिनः श्रुत्वा दशग्रीवः प्रतापवान्
Hearing Vālī's words, Daśagrīva, endowed with splendor,
असंशयं जिताः सर्वे मया देवासुरा रणे
Without doubt, all the gods and demons have been conquered by me in battle.
तदिच्छामि त्वया सार्द्धं सौहृदं भयवर्जितम्
Therefore, I desire friendship with you, free from fear, together with you.
एवमुक्तो ऽब्रवीद्वाली भवत्येतद्वचस्तव
Thus addressed, Vālī said, 'Let your words be so.'
जगाम लङ्कां सगणः प्रहृष्टेनान्तरात्मना
He went to Lanka together with his followers, his heart filled with joy.
आजहार बहून्यज्ञानन्नपानसमावृतान्
He performed many sacrifices, abundant with food and drink.
अग्निष्टोमाश्वमेधांश्च राजसूयान्नृमेधकान्
He offered Agniṣṭoma, Aśvamedha, Rājasūya, and Nṛmedha sacrifices.
तर्पयित्वाथ देवांश्च देवेन्द्रंबहुभिस्तथा
Having satisfied the gods and also Indra with many offerings,
सुग्रीवेण सह भ्रात्रा सुखी भूत्वा यवीयसा
He lived happily with his younger brother Sugrīva.
ब्रह्मण्यो ब्रह्मपरमो धर्मसेतुः क्रियापरः
Devoted to Brahman, supreme in knowledge of Brahman, upholding dharma, devoted to rites,
यस्य देवमुनिर्गाथां जगौ यज्ञेषु नारदः
Of whom the divine sage Nārada sang a hymn at the sacrifices,
तुल्यो ऽस्ति त्रिषु लोकेषु वालिनोहेममालिनः
There is no equal in the three worlds to Vāli, adorned with a golden garland.
वाली यज्ञसहस्राणां यज्वा परमदुर्जयः
Vāli, performer of a thousand sacrifices, was supremely difficult to conquer.
निरुक्तमस्य तु विभो याथातथ्येन सुव्रत
O virtuous one, the true account of him, O lord, is now declared as it really was.
सृत्यमानेषु भूतेषु प्रजापतिरथ स्वयम्
When beings were being created, then Prajāpati himself,
प्रवेशायामास तदा योगेन महता वृताः
By great yoga, caused them to enter, being enveloped.
