वानरा वानरीभिस्ते दिव्याभरणभूषिताः
The monkeys, together with the monkey females, are adorned with divine ornaments.
क्रियामयाः समुदिता दिवि देवगणा इव
They are filled with ritual activity, assembled like hosts of gods in heaven.
धार्मिकाश्च वरोत्सिक्ता युद्धशैण्डा महाबलाः
Righteous, exceedingly noble, mighty in battle, and of great strength,
अम्लानिनः सत्यसंधा नानार्थे बहुजल्पिनः
Unfading, steadfast in truth, skilled in many matters, and eloquent in speech.
वनालङ्कारभूतो हि सृष्टा वै ब्रह्मणा स्वयम्
Indeed, they are the adornment of the forests, created by Brahmā himself.
कपीनामवतारो ऽयं सर्वपापविनाशनः
This is the descent of the monkeys, the destroyer of all sins.
तदेव कीर्तयिष्यामि तच्छृणुध्वमतन्द्रिताः
That very account I shall now recount; listen to it attentively.
व्याघ्रस्य भ्रातरः पञ्च स्वसारश्च तथास्य वै
The tiger had five brothers and likewise sisters,
प्रतिपादिता स्वयं भ्रात्रा भातृदारास्तथैव च
Who were themselves given by their brother, as were the wives of the brothers.
शरभस्यापि विद्धांसो भ्रातरो वीर्यसंमताः
The brothers of Śarabha, renowned for their valor, were also distinguished.
शरभस्य सुतो धीमाञ्शुको नाम महाबलः
Śarabha's son, wise and mighty, was named Śuka.
संमतः सर्वशूराणां चक्रवर्ति दुरासदः
He was esteemed by all the heroes, a sovereign difficult to overcome.
इन्ता सदैव शत्रूणां सर्वास्त्रविधिपारगः
Always a terror to his enemies, he was accomplished in all the methods of weaponry.
प्रजापतिरुपादाय कन्यां हेमविभूषिताम्
The lord of creatures took a maiden adorned with gold.
पाणिं जग्राह तस्यास्तु ऋक्षो वानरयूथपः
The monkey chief took her hand.
चकमे तां महेन्द्रस्तु दृष्ट्वा वै प्रियदर्शनाम्
Seeing her, who was lovely to behold, Mahendra accepted her.
विरजायां महेन्द्रेण महेन्द्रसमविक्रमः
In Virajā, by Mahendra—whose valor equaled Mahendra's—
रहस्युत्पादितः पुत्रः सुग्रीवो हरियूथपः
A son was secretly begotten, Sugrīva, the leader of the monkeys.
हर्ष चक्रे सुविपुलं सर्ववानरयूथपः
The chief of all the monkey troops rejoiced greatly.
अभिषिक्तस्ततो वाली सुग्रीवानुगतो बली
Then Vālī, powerful and accompanied by Sugrīva, was anointed king.
सुषेणास्य सुता चापि भार्या तस्य महात्मनः
Suṣeṇa's daughter also became the wife of that great-souled one.
सुषुवे सापि तनयमङ्गदं कनकाङ्गदम्
She bore a son, Aṅgada, adorned with golden ornaments.
मैन्दस्य च्येष्ठकन्यायां ध्रुवो नाम महायशाः
From the eldest daughter of Mainda was born Dhruva, of great fame.
तस्यापि च सुता जातास्त्रयः परमकीर्त्तयः
And to her, three sons were also born, of supreme renown.
वालिनः पार्श्वतो ऽतिष्ठत्सुग्रीवः सह वानरैः
Sugrīva stood at Vālī's side, together with the monkeys.
केसरी कुञ्जरस्याथ सुतां भार्यामविन्दत
Then Keśarī obtained as wife the daughter of Kuñjara.
पर्युपास्ते च तां वायुर्यौंवनादेव गर्विताम्
And Vāyu approached her, proud in her youth.
ये ह्यन्ये केसरिसुता विख्याता दिवि चेह वै
And the other sons of Keśarī, renowned both in heaven and here,
श्रुतिमान्केतुमांश्चैव मतिमान्धृतिमानपि
Śrutimān, Ketumā, and also Matimān and Dhṛtimān,
स्वानरूपैः सुताः पित्रा पुत्रपौत्रसमन्विताः
Sons resembling their father, accompanied by sons and grandsons,
