चरन्ति पृथिवीं कृत्स्नां तत्र ते देवलौकिकाः
They roam the whole earth—those beings of the divine world.
तस्यास्त्वपि च नीलाया विकचा नाम राक्षसी
And of that Nīlā, there was a rākṣasī named Vikacā.
विरूपकेन तस्यां वै नैरृतेन इह प्रजाः
By Virūpaka, the Nairṛta, offspring were born from her.
दंष्ट्राकराला विकृता महाकर्णा महोदराः
With protruding fangs, deformed, large-eared, and big-bellied.
रेरवाकाः पिशाचाश्च वाहकास्त्रासकाः परे
Some are howlers, others are piśācas, some are carriers, others cause fear.
चरन्त्यदृष्टपूर्वास्तु नानाकारा ह्यनेकशः
They move about in forms never seen before, of many kinds and in great numbers.
लक्षमात्रेण चाकाशं स्वल्पात्स्वल्पं चरन्ति वै
Within a hundred thousand measures, they traverse the sky, moving little by little.
भूमिराक्षसकैः सर्वैरनेकैः क्षुद्रराक्षसैः
The earth is filled with all sorts of rākṣasas and many small rākṣasas.
समासाभिहिताश्चैवह्यष्टौ राक्षसमातरः
And thus, in summary, eight rākṣasa mothers are mentioned.
भद्रका निकराः केचिदज्ञनिष्पत्तिहेतुकाः
Some groups are Bhadrakās, the cause of ignorance and misfortune.
पूतरा मातृसामान्यास्तथा भूतभयङ्कराः
The Pūtarā are common to the Mothers and also terrifying to living beings.
स्कन्दग्रहादयो हास्या आपकास्त्रासकादयः
The Skandagrahas and others are laughable, while the Āpakas and Trāsakas are of another kind.
स्कन्दग्रहविशेषाणां मायिकानां तथैव च
There are also particular Skandagrahas, as well as those that are illusory in nature.
एवं गणसहस्राणि चरन्ति पृथिवीमिमाम्
In this way, thousands of hosts wander across this earth.
यक्षाणां राक्षसानां च पौलस्त्यागस्तयश्च ये
Among the Yakṣas, Rākṣasas, and those descended from the Paulastyas and Agastya,
यक्षादृष्ट्या पिबन्तीह नॄणां मांसमसृग्वसे
Some, with the gaze of Yakṣas, here drink the flesh and blood of men.
सर्वलक्षणसंपन्नाः समामैश्चापि दैवतैः
They are endowed with all marks and are equal even to the gods.
अनाभिभाव्या विक्रान्ताः सर्वलोकनमस्कृताः
Unconquerable, mighty, and revered by all worlds.
देवानां लक्षणं ह्येतदसुराणां तथैव च
This is the characteristic of the gods, and likewise of the asuras.
गन्धर्वेभ्यस्त्रिभिः पादैर्हीना गुह्यकराक्षसाः
The Guhyakas and Rākṣasas are inferior to the Gandharvas by three parts.
एवन्धनेन रूपेण आयुषा च बलेन च
In wealth, form, lifespan, and strength,
देवासुरेभ्यो हीयन्ते त्रींस्त्रीन्पादान्परस्परम्
The gods and asuras are less than each other by three parts.
अतः शृणुत भद्रं वः प्रजाः क्रोधवशान्वयाः
Therefore, listen, may good fortune be yours, O offspring of those ruled by anger.
ता भार्या पुलहस्यासन्नामतो मे निबोधत
Those wives belonged to Pulaha; now hear their names from me.
भूता च कपिशा दंष्ट्रा ऋषा तिर्या तथैव च
Bhūtā, Kapiśā, Daṃṣṭrā, Ṛṣā, and Tiryā likewise.
मृग्यास्तु हरिगाः पुत्रा मृगश्चान्ये शशास्तथा
Among the wild animals, the offspring are the monkeys; others are deer and hares.
ऋक्षाश्च मृगमन्दाया गवयाश्चापरे तथा
The bears are from Mṛgamandā, and others are gavayas as well.
हर्य्या स्तु हरयः पुत्रा गोलाङ्गूलास्तरक्षवः
From Haryā, the offspring are monkeys, golāṅgūlas, and tigers.
सिंहाव्याघ्राश्च नीलाश्चद्वीपिनः क्रोधिताधराः
Lions, tigers, blue panthers, and other wild beasts with fierce jaws.
मण्डूका नकुलाश्चैव वल्कका वनगोचराः
Frogs, mongooses, and valkakas, those who dwell in the forest.
