Having spoken thus, the great and radiant one acted accordingly at that time.
When her husband had departed, that goddess Diti was exceedingly delighted.
But Śakra, the lord, having overheard that conversation between the two,
I will serve you; you should grant me permission.
As you think best, child, be devoted to service.
Hearing that boon, and his mother's words, Śakra was delighted.
Śakra served her at all times, ever devoted.
He massaged her limbs at the proper times and relieved her fatigue.
When a little of the vow remained, the goddess, pleased, spoke to Śakra.
What remains, O blessed one, you will then see your brother.
You will enjoy, my son, the conquest of the three worlds together with him.
Having spoken thus to Śakra, Diti, when the sun had reached midday,
She placed her hair at her feet and the goddess fell asleep.
Then, realizing she was impure, he considered that moment an opportunity.
He thought to destroy the goddess's embryo, for that was the fault he perceived there.
And entering, Indra, of great energy, beheld that embryo.
Let not the womb be pierced by the thunderbolt with a hundred joints.
Do not cry, do not cry—thus Indra spoke to the embryo.
Then Indra split it with the thunderbolt, and Diti awoke.
Then the wielder of the thunderbolt withdrew, out of respect for his mother's words.
O goddess, you are impure and asleep, your hair fallen at your feet.
I have broken this of yours; you should forgive me for this, though it is in many ways.
She spoke to the thousand-eyed, formidable Indra with conciliatory words.
There is no offense, O lord of the gods, from your mighty son.
I wish for what is dear, but what benefit is there for my embryo now?
Let these seven wind-borne ones, my sons, move about.
The first moves on earth, the second in the sun.
The fifth among the planets, the sixth in the circle of the Seven Sages.
These, my sons, wander today from time to time.
The first moves on earth, from the clouds, the one who brings.
