The Daitya Hiraṇyakaśipu performed supreme austerity.
The Daitya, pleased, chose Brahmā as his boon-giver.
By the power of yoga, he conquered the gods and assumed the sovereignty over all the deities.
The Dānavas, the Asuras, and the gods together with the celestial singers (Cāraṇas)—
Thus addressed, Brahmā then granted him the desired boon.
Now come, let the pledge be made; so indeed shall it be.
Then that Daitya ruled over all the world, both the moving and the unmoving.
He himself shines in the sky, having assumed the forms of the moon and the sun.
He is the cowherd, the protector of cows, and the ploughman—he alone indeed.
He is the leader, the guardian, the protector, the initiated one, and the sacrificer.
Such is the power of that Daitya; now listen further.
A verse was formerly sung here by the Daityas about Hiraṇyakaśipu.
To him, at that time, the gods together with the great sages offered their salutations.
Because his birth was from a man, and his form was that of a man, he is the Lord.
On the shore of the ocean, the mighty one, exalted in austerity—
By name Sudarśana, renowned and of great strength.
In great fury, he tore with his nails—wet or dry, they are called nails.
Śambara, Śakuni, and Kālanābha likewise—
These are the sons of Hiraṇyākṣa, difficult even for the gods to overcome.
Hundreds and thousands of them were slain in the battle with Tāraka.
Prahlāda was the eldest among them, and Anuhna was the youngest.
Sunda and Nisunda, both sons of Hṛāda, were born as well.
Mārīca was the son of Sunda, and Tāḍakā was his mother.
Mūka was slain by the archer Arjuna among the Kirātas.
They were born through great austerity and became distinguished themselves.
Similarly, Dakṣa and Sura, and Caṇḍa—these four were leaders among the Daityas.
Brahmajit and Kratujit, as well as Devāntaka and Narāntaka.
Rājāja and Goma, both renowned as sons of Śambhu.
A hundred sons were born to Bali, and all of them became kings.
Among them, Sahasrabāhu was the foremost; Bāṇa was a powerful king.
