यद्यद्विभूतिमत्सत्त्वं श्रीमदूर्जितमेव वा
Whatever being possesses glory, fortune, or might,
स एव जायतेंऽशेन केचिदिच्छन्ति मानवाः
He alone is born by a portion; some men desire this.
एषां न विद्यते भेदस्त्रयाणां द्युसदामिह
There is no distinction among these three dwellers of heaven here.
जायन्ते पोहयन्त्यं शैरीश्वरा योगमायया
They are born, they sustain, and they rule by the power of yoga-māyā.
भूतानुवादिना माद्या मध्यस्था भूतवादिनाम्
The foremost speak according to beings, the intermediates speak of beings.
परीक्ष्य चानुगृह्णन्ति निगृह्णन्ति खलान्स्वयम्
Having examined, they grant favor and themselves restrain the wicked.
तथाधिकरणैरतैर्यथा तत्त्वनिदर्शकाः
Thus, by such authorities, as those who reveal the truth.
कर्म्मणां महतां ते हि कर्त्तारो जगदीश्वराः
They are the makers of great deeds, the lords of the world.
बालिशास्ते न जानन्ति दैवतानि प्रभागशः
The ignorant do not understand the deities in their distinct portions.
कुर्याद्योगबलं प्राप्य तैश्च सर्वैर्महांश्चरेत्
Having attained the power of yoga, one should act together with all of them in greatness.
संहरेत पुनः सर्व्वान्सूर्य्यो ज्योतिर्गणानिव
He should withdraw them all again, like the sun does with the hosts of lights.
सर्वे मन्त्रशरीरास्ते स्मृता मन्वन्तरेष्विह
All these are said to be embodied as mantras in each manvantara here.
चितिश्च सुचितिश्चैव ह्याकूतिः कूतिरेव च
Citi, Suciti, Ākūti, and Kūti as well.
दाराग्निहोत्रसंबन्धं वितत्य यजतेति च
And also the connection of wives and the agnihotra, and the command to perform sacrifice.
ततस्ते नाभ्यनन्दन्त तद्वाक्यं परमेष्ठिनः
But they did not welcome the words of the Supreme Lord.
यमेष्वंवावन्तिष्ठन्ते दोषं दृष्ट्वा तु कर्मसु
Seeing fault in actions, they remained steadfast in restraint.
जुगुप्संतः प्रसूतिं च निःसत्त्वा निर्ममाभवन्
Disgusted with procreation, they became devoid of essence and free from possessiveness.
अर्थं धर्मं च कामं च हित्वा ते वै व्यवस्थिताः
Having abandoned wealth, righteousness, and desire, they remained thus established.
तेषां तु तमभिप्रायं ज्ञात्वा ब्रह्मा तु कोपितः
But knowing their intention, Brahmā became angry.
प्रजार्थमिह यूयं वै मया सृष्टाः स्थ नान्यथा
You have been created by me here for the sake of progeny, not otherwise.
यस्माद्वाक्यमनादृत्य मम वैराग्यमास्थिताः
Because, disregarding my word, you have resorted to renunciation.
कर्मणां न कृतो ऽभ्यासो ह्यमृतत्वाभिकाङ्क्षया
There has been no practice of actions, desiring immortality.
ते शप्ता ब्रह्मणा देवा जयास्तं वै प्रसादयन्
Cursed by Brahmā, the gods sought to appease him.
प्रणतान्वै सानुनयं ब्रह्मा तानब्रवीत्पुनः
Bowing with conciliation, Brahmā again spoke to them.
मयागतं तु सर्वं हि कथमच्छन्दतो मम
All that has come from me, how could it be contrary to my will?
लोके यदपि किञ्चिद्वैशं वा शं वा व्यवस्थितम्
Whatever exists in the world, whether auspicious or inauspicious, is established.
भूताना मीहितं यच्च यच्चाप्येषां विचिन्तितम्
Whatever is desired by beings, and whatever is contemplated by them,
मया बद्धमिदं सर्वं चजगत्स्थावरजङ्गमम्
All this, the entire world of moving and unmoving things, has been bound by me.
यस्माद्वहति दृप्तो वै सर्वार्थमिह नान्यथा
Because the proud one carries everything here; it is not otherwise.
एवं संभाष्य तान्देवान् जयानध्यात्मचेतसः
Thus, having spoken to those gods, who were intent on victory and focused in mind,
