ओर्वस्यासीत्पुत्रशतं जमदग्निपुरोगमम्
Aurva had a hundred sons, with Jamadagni as their foremost.
ऋष्यतरेषु वै बाह्या बहवो भार्गवाः स्मृताः
Among Ṛṣyatara's descendants, many Bhārgavas are known as outsiders.
मित्रेयुः सप्तमा ह्येते पक्षा ज्ञेयास्तु भार्गवाः
Mitreyu is the seventh; these are to be understood as the Bhārgava branches.
यस्यान्ववाये संभूता भारद्वाजाः सगौतमाः
From whose lineage arose the Bhāradvājas along with the Gautamas.
सुरूपा चैव मारीची कार्दमी च तथा स्वराट्
Surūpā, Mārīcī, Kārdamī, and likewise Svarāṭ.
अथर्वणस्तु दायादास्तासु जाताः कुलोद्वहाः
Atharvan's heirs, born among them, were illustrious in their families.
बृहस्पतिं सुरूपायां गौतमं सुषुवे स्वराट्
Bṛhaspati was born from Surūpā, and Gautama from Svarāṭ.
धृष्णिः पुत्रस्तु पथ्यायाः संवर्त्तश्चैव मानसः
Dhṛṣṇi was the son of Pathyā, and Saṃvarta was Mānasa.
अथोशिजो दीर्घतमा बृहदुक्थो वामदेवजः
And also Ushija, Dirghatamas, Brihaduktha, and the son of Vamadeva.
रथकाराः स्मृता देवा ऋभवो ये परिश्रुताः
The Ribhus, renowned as the divine chariot-makers, are remembered as gods.
बृहस्पतिं सुरूपायां गौतमं सुषुवे स्वराट्
Svarat begot Brihaspati through Surupa, and Gautama as well.
आधार्यायुर्द्दनुर्दक्षो दमः प्राणस्त थैव च
Ādhārya, Ayu, Dhanur, Daksha, Dama, and Prana likewise.
अयास्याश्चप्युतथ्याश्च वामदेवास्तथौशिजाः
Also the Ayasyas, the Utathyas, the Vamadevas, and the Ushijas.
मुद्गला विष्णुवृद्धाश्च हरिताः कपयस्तथा
The Mudgalas, Vishnuvriddhas, Haritas, and also the Kapayas.
एते चाङ्गिरसां पक्षा विज्ञेया दश पञ्च च
These are to be known as the fifteen branches of the Angirasas.
मरीचेरपि वक्ष्यामि भेद मुत्तमपूरुषम्
Now I shall declare the supreme division of Marichi.
मरीचिरापश्चकमे नाभिध्यायन्प्रजेप्सया
Marichi, desiring offspring, contemplated the waters.
संयुज्यात्मानमेवन्तु तपसा भावितः प्रभुः
The lord, disciplined by austerity, united himself with his own self.
तासु प्रणिहितात्मानमेकं सो ऽजनयत्प्रभुः
With his mind fixed upon them, that lord generated a single being.
पुत्रं मरीचिस्तपसि निरतः सो ऽप्स्वतीतपत्
Marichi, devoted to austerity, begot a son in the waters.
सप्तवर्षसहस्राणि ततः सो ऽप्रतिमो ऽभवत्
For seven thousand years thereafter, he became incomparable.
मन्वन्तरेषु सर्वेषु ब्रह्मणोंऽशेन जायते
In all the Manvantaras, he is born as a portion of Brahma.
अपिबत्स तदा कश्यं कश्यं मद्यमिहोच्यते
Then he drank kashyam, which here is called intoxicating liquor.
कश्यं मद्यं स्मृतं विप्रैः कश्यपानां तु कश्यपः
Kashyam liquor is remembered by the sages; among the Kashyapas, Kashyapa himself.
दक्षाभिशप्तः कुपितः कश्यपस्तेन सो ऽभवत्
Cursed by Daksha in anger, Kashyapa thus became so.
तस्मै प्राचेतसो दक्षः कन्यास्ताः प्रत्यपादयत्
To him, Prachetas Daksha gave those daughters.
इत्येतमृषिसर्गं तु पुण्यं यो वेद वारुणम्
Whoever knows this sacred account of the creation of the sages, called Vāruṇa, is blessed.
धारणाच्छ्रवणाद्वापि सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते
By reciting or even hearing it, one is freed from all sins.
प्रजाः सृजेति व्यदिष्टः स्वयं दक्षः स्वयंभुवा
Dakṣa himself, at the command of the Self-born, was appointed to create beings.
मानसानि च भूतानि स पूर्वमसृजत्प्रभुः
First, that lord created beings born from his mind.
