मरीचिमादितः कृत्वा देवाश्च ऋषिभिः सह
Having first created Marichi, the gods together with the sages,
तस्मिन् यज्ञे महाभागा देवाश्च ऋषयश्च ये
In that sacrifice, the illustrious gods and sages—whoever they were—
तव तेनैव रूपेण स्थापयेयुरिमाः प्रजाः
By that very form of yours, they would establish these creatures.
ततो ऽब्रवील्लोकगुरुः परमित्यभिधार यन्
Then the preceptor of the worlds spoke, addressing him as 'supreme.'
भवतां वंशसंभूताः पुनरेते महर्षयः
These great sages, born in your lineage, again—
विस्तरेणानुपूर्व्या च प्रथमस्य प्रजापतेः
In detail and in order, from the first progenitor—
हिरण्यकशिपो कन्या दिव्या नाम परिश्रुता
Hiraṇyakaśipu had a daughter, Divyā by name, renowned.
भृगोस्त्वजनयद्दिव्या पुत्रं ब्रह्मविदां वरम्
Divyā gave birth to a son of Bhṛgu, foremost among knowers of Brahman.
शुक्र एवोशना नित्यमतः काव्यो ऽपि नामतः
He is eternally known as Śukra, and also as Kāvya by name.
शुक्रस्य भार्या गौर्नाम विजज्ञे चतुरः सुतान्
Śukra's wife, named Gaurī, bore him four sons.
तेजसादित्यसंकाशा ब्रह्मकल्पाः प्रभावतः
Radiant as the sun, resembling Brahmā in power and might.
वरत्रिणः सुता ह्येते ब्रह्मिष्ठा दैत्ययाजकाः
These sons of Varatriṇa were devoted to Brahman, priests of the Daityas.
निरस्यमानं वै धर्मं दृष्ट्वेन्द्रो मनुमाब्रवीत्
Seeing dharma being rejected, Indra spoke to Manu.
श्रुत्वेन्द्रस्य तु तद्वाक्यं तस्माद्देशादपाक्रमन्
Hearing Indra's words, they departed from that region.
ग्रहेण मोचयित्वा च ततश्चानुससार ताम्
After freeing her from captivity, he then followed her.
तानागतान्पुनर्दृष्ट्वा दुष्टानिन्द्रो विहस्य तु
Seeing them return again, Indra laughed at the wicked ones.
तेषां तु धृष्यमाणानां तत्र शालावृकैः सह
There, as they were being attacked, together with the Śālāvṛkas—
एवं वरत्रिणः पुत्रा इन्द्रेण निहताः पुरा
Thus, the sons of Varatriṇa were formerly slain by Indra.
त्रिशिरा विश्वरूपस्तु त्वष्टुः पुत्रो ऽभवन्महान्
Triśiras Viśvarūpa, a great one, was the son of Tvaṣṭṛ.
विश्वरूपानुजश्चैव विश्वकर्मा च यः स्मृतः
And Viśvakarman, remembered as the younger brother of Viśvarūpa.
दिव्यानुसुषुवे कन्या काव्यस्यैवानुजा प्रभोः
A divine maiden was born, the younger sister of Kāvyā, the lord.
क्रतुः शुचिः स्वमूर्द्धा च व्याजश्च वसुदश्च यः
Kratu, Śuci, Svamūrdhā, Vyāja, and Vasuda are those.
इत्येते भृगवो देवाः स्मृता द्वादश यज्ञियाः
Thus, these Bhṛgus are known as twelve divine sacrificers.
व्यादितः सो ऽष्टमे मासिगर्भः क्रूरेण रक्षसा
He was torn from the womb in the eighth month by a fierce demon.
प्रचेताः श्च्यवनः क्रोधाद्दग्धवान्पुरुषादकान्
Pracetā, Cyavana, out of anger, burned the impure men.
आप्रवानं दधीचं च तावुभौ साधुसंमतौ
Āpravāna and Dadhīca, both are esteemed as virtuous.
ऋची पत्नी महाभागा अप्रवानस्य नाहुषी
Ṛcī, the greatly fortunate wife of Āpravāna, was of the Nāhuṣa lineage.
और्वस्यासीदृचीकस्तु दीप्तो ऽग्निसमतेजसा
Aurva's son was Ṛcīka, blazing with the brilliance equal to fire.
भृगोश्चरुविपर्यासे रौद्रवैष्णवयौः पुरा
In the reversal of Bhṛgu's offering, there arose both fierce and Viṣṇu-like forms.
रेणुकाजमदग्नेश्च शक्रतुल्यपराक्रमम्
Reṇukā bore Jamadagni, whose valor equaled that of Indra.
