पुत्रत्वे कल्पयामास महादेव स्तदा भृगुम्
Mahādeva then appointed Bhṛgu as his son.
द्वितीयं च ततः शुक्रमङ्गारेष्वजुहोत्प्रभुः
Then, as the second, Śukra was offered by the lord in the embers.
संभूतिं तस्य तां दृष्ट्वा वह्निर्ब्रह्माणमब्रवीत्
Seeing that birth, Agni spoke to Brahmā.
एवमस्त्विति सो ऽप्युक्तो ब्रह्मणा सदसस्पतिः
Thus, being told by Brahmā, the lord of existence replied, 'So be it.'
षट् कृत्वा तु पुनः शुक्रे ब्रह्मणा लोककारिणा
Six times again, in Śukra, by Brahmā, the creator of worlds.
मरीचिः प्रथमं तत्र मरीचिभ्यः समुत्थितः
Marīci was first there, arising from the Marīcis.
अहं तृतीय इत्यत्रिस्तस्मादत्रिः स कीर्त्यते
'I am the third,' thus Atri; therefore he is called Atri.
केशैर्लंबैः समुद्भूतस्तस्मात्स पुलहः स्मृतः
Born from hanging hair, thus he is remembered as Pulaha.
वसिष्ठ इति तत्त्वज्ञैः प्रोच्यते ब्रह्मवादिभिः
He is called Vasiṣṭha by those who know reality, by the speakers of Brahman.
लोकस्य सन्तानकरा यैरिमा वर्द्धिताः प्रजाः
By whom the progeny of the world was increased, these are the creators of offspring.
अपरे पितरो नाम एतैरेव महर्षिभिः
Others, called Pitṛs, are also these great sages.
अजेयाश्च गणाः सप्त सप्तलोकेषु विश्रुताः
And the seven groups, unconquerable, renowned in the seven worlds.
पौलस्त्याः पौलहाश्चैव वासिष्ठाश्चैव विश्रुताः
The Paulastyas, the Paulahas, and the Vasiṣṭhas are renowned.
एते समासतः ख्याताः पुनरन्ये गणास्त्रयः
These are known in summary; again, there are three other groups.
तेषां राजायमो देवो यमैर्विहतकल्मषः
Among them, Yama, the god, free from sin through the Yamas, is their king.
कश्यपः कर्दमः शेषो विक्रान्तः सुश्रवास्तथा
Kashyapa, Kardama, Shesha, Vikranta, and Sushrava as well,
प्रचेतसोरिष्टनेमिर्बहुलश्च प्रजापतिः
Prachetasa, Rishtanemi, and Bahula, the lord of creatures,
कुशोच्चया वालखिल्याः सभूताः परमर्षयः
The Valakhilyas, of great asceticism, together with the exalted sages, were born from the kusha grass heaps.
जाताश्च भस्मनो ह्यन्ये ब्रह्मर्षिगणसंमताः
Others, esteemed among the hosts of Brahmarshis, were born from the ashes.
नस्तो द्वावस्य चोत्पन्नावश्विनौ रूपसंमतौ
Two were lost, but the Ashvins, renowned for their beauty, were born.
अन्ये प्रजानां पतयः श्रोतोभ्यस्तस्य जज्ञिरे
Other lords of beings were born from his ears.
अयने ऋतवो मासर्द्धमासाः पक्षसंधयः
The solstices, seasons, months, half-months, and the junctions of fortnights,
रौद्रं लोहितमित्याहुर्लोहितं कनकं स्मृतम्
What is called 'Raudra' is said to be red; red is remembered as gold.
ये ऽर्चिषस्तस्य ते रुद्रास्तथादित्याः समृद्गताः
Those rays of his are Rudras, and likewise, the Adityas have arisen.
आदिभूतो ऽस्य लोकस्य ब्रह्मा त्वं ब्रह्मसंभवः
You, Brahma, are the origin of this world, born from Brahman.
ब्रह्मा सुरगुरुस्तत्र त्रिदशैः संप्रसादितः
There, Brahma, the guru of the gods, was propitiated by the thirty-three gods.
सर्वे प्रजानां पतयः सर्वे चापि तपस्विनः
All the lords of beings and all the ascetics,
त्वद्वंशवर्द्धनाः शश्वत्तव तेजोविवर्द्धनाः
They are ever the enhancers of your lineage, ever the increasers of your splendor.
वेदमन्त्रधराः सर्वे प्रजापतिसमुद्भवाः
All, bearing the Vedic mantras, are born from the lord of creatures.
सर्वे हि वयमेते च तवैव प्रसवः प्रभो
Indeed, all of us and these are your own progeny, O Lord.
