भूतभव्यभवद्ध्येत त्समृतं लोकत्रयं द्विजैः
The lords of past, future, and present are remembered by the twice-born as the triad of worlds.
भव्यं स्मृतं दिवं ह्येतत्तेषां वक्ष्यामि साधनम्
The future is remembered as heaven; I will now explain their means of attainment.
भूरिति व्याहृतं पूर्वं भूर्लोको ऽयमभूत्तदा
The syllable 'bhūḥ' was first uttered, and thus this world, Bhūloka, came into being.
भूतत्वाद्दर्शनाच्चैव भूर्लोको ऽयमभूत्ततः
Because of its existence and perception, this world became known as Bhūloka.
भूते ऽस्मिन्भवदित्युक्तं द्वितीयं ब्रह्मणा पुनः
In this world, the word 'bhūvaḥ' was next spoken by Brahmā.
भवनात्तु भुवल्लोको निरुत्तया हि निरुच्यते
From 'bhavana' (becoming), the world Bhuvarloka is so named, according to its etymology.
उत्पन्ने तु तथा लोके द्वितीये ब्रह्मणा पुनः
When that second world was thus produced, Brahmā again uttered it.
अनागते भव्य इत शब्द एष विभाव्यते
For what is yet to come, the word 'bhavya' is recognized as indicating the future.
भूरितीयं स्मृता भूमिरन्तरिक्षं भुवः स्मृतम्
'Bhūḥ' is remembered as the earth, and 'bhuvaḥ' is remembered as the atmosphere.
त्रैलोक्ययुक्तैर्व्याहारैस्तिस्रो व्याहृतयो ऽभवन्
With these three utterances connected to the three worlds, the three Vyāhṛtis came to be.
यस्माद्भूतस्य लोकस्य भव्यस्य भवतस्तथा
Because of the worlds that are past, present, and future—
प्रधानभूता देवेन्द्रा गुणभूतास्तथैव च
The chief among the gods, Indras, and those possessing qualities, likewise—
यज्ञगन्धर्वरक्षांसि पिशाचो रगमानुषाः
Yajñas, Gandharvas, Rākṣasas, Piśācas, and human beings—
देवेन्द्रा गुरवो नाथा राजानः पितरो हि ते
The Indras among the gods, teachers, lords, kings, and ancestors are indeed they.
इत्येतल्लक्षणं प्रोक्तं देवेन्द्राणां समासतः
Thus, this is the general characteristic described of the Indras of the gods.
गाधिजः कौशिको धीमान्विश्वामित्रो महातपाः
Gādhija, the wise Kauśika, Viśvāmitra, the great ascetic—
बृहस्पतिसुतश्चापि भरद्वाजो महा यशाः
And also Bṛhaspati's son, Bharadvāja, of great renown—
स्वायंभुवो ऽत्रिर्भगवान्ब्रह्मकोशः सपञ्चमः
Svāyambhuva, Atri the blessed, and Brahmakośa are the fifth.
वत्सरः काश्यपश्यैव सप्तैते साधुसंमताः
Vatsara and Kāśyapa—these seven are esteemed by the virtuous.
इक्ष्वाकुश्च नृगश्चैव धृष्टः शर्यातिरेब च
Ikṣvāku, Nṛga, Dhṛṣṭa, and also Śaryāti—
करूषश्च पृषध्रश्च पांशुश्चनवमः स्मृतः
Karūṣa, Pṛṣadhra, and Pāṃśu are remembered as the ninth.
कीर्तिता वै तथा ह्येते सप्तमं चैतदन्तरम्
Thus, these are indeed recounted, and this is the seventh among them.
विस्तरेणानुपूर्व्या च भूयः किं कथयाम्यहम्
Why should I narrate further, in detail and in order?
तृतीयं विस्तरात्पादं सोपोद्धातं प्रवर्त्तय
Begin the third section in detail, including its introduction.
पादं समुच्चयाद्विप्रा गदतो मे निबोधत
O Brahmins, listen as I recite the section in summary.
विस्तरेणानुपूर्व्या च निसर्गं शृणुत द्विजाः
O twice-born, hear the creation in detail and in sequence.
मह देवगणैश्चैव ऋषिभिर्दानवैस्सह
Along with the great hosts of gods, sages, and Dānavas,
मानुषैः पशुभिश्चैव पक्षिभिः स्थावरैः सह
With humans, animals, birds, and immovable beings,
वक्ष्ये वैवस्वतं सर्गं नमस्कृत्य विवस्वते
I shall declare the creation of Vaivasvata, having bowed to Vivasvat.
स्वायंभुवेंऽतरे पूर्वं सप्तासन्ये महर्षयः
In the previous Svāyambhuva Manvantara, there were seven great sages.
